Hey everyone gets their opinion, but based on what I'm hearing this is far superior to Gravity (not hard) and I'm going to put it above Happiness in terms of listenability.
Their third album is much vaunted by the fans who were around at that time but it lacks the bombast of what we've heard here. Hapiness is an intense record but in some spots it reaks of overproduction (Annie, Consequence of Laughing). From what we've heard, I think this record is more in line with Naveed and Spiritual Machines. I leave Clumsy out of the mix because I think its sub-par compared with Naveed.
These are debates we can have all day I guess and nobody will ever agree, but I think this record will prove to be the band's signature if they can land that elusive radio #1. Hell, if Maroon 5 can do it with "She will be loved", I have faith in these guys.
Anyway, I'm very, very surprised.

Spiritual Machines was also a very heavily produced album, maybe not as heavy as Happiness... but I don't think the new songs sound very much like any of the older CD's, but sound most like Gravity...
I also don't think OLP needs a "signature" since they have had big success, especially with Clumsy and Gravity... I don't know that I want them to have a #1 radio single since a song like She Will Be Loved can be one also...
and you're right, we could debate all day and never agree... but it is interesting to hear other points of view...

it really is.

Anyways, I consider Happiness to be my favourite album. And I think it's unfair to say that the band always wanted a simple sound. You can go bacn and find interviews where they've said the complete opposite. Most of those have Mike saying that he like intriquite little sounds. Also, for every person you find here saying that they should have a simple sound, you find one saying that they need to go back and layer the living day lights out of everything. So I think that it's unfair to say that going one way or another would fix their 'sound' or 'direction.'
and for my daily dose of spam...
"can't get enough of those sugar crisps'

i don't think this is the last album... i agree with whoever said that they are going to be like another Tragically Hip.
what i don't get is why his lyrics are still sucky. or suckier than before. i mean, raine can probably see that naveed lyrics are superior to the new lyrics.

Hey, I never said OLP had to have a simpler sound or simplyer lyrics. I think bands can go either way. Just look at U2 over the years. How you get from the Judas preaching of "Until the end of the world" to Miracle Drug's "Freedom has a scent like the top of a newborn baby's head", is all a matter of style and perspective.
I can't fault Raine anymore for making his lyrics more accessible (I was very disilluisioned with Gravity). Particularly now that I think he's really inspired. I found much of Happiness and even SM to be pretentious and a little obscure for the sake of it. Not to mention he was really stretching his range beyond what the average listener considers "listenable." There were some real Geddy Lee moments on Happiness that make me cringe.
That aside, it will always hold a special place for me because I was so into what they were doing at the time. They said it repeatedly in interviews but I really think they did grow as a band and that this album will bear those statements out. It looks like they really did have to break it down to build it back up again and I think Steve will prove himself to be a superior guitarist to Mike Turner on this record.
But will it be their last?
I think it depends on how it does stateside. Maybe they have another album in the can already. All I know is I'll go and see them this time out and I will try to enjoy every single note while they're still around.

You don't need to be big in the US to have success. Look at Matt Good, The Tragically Hip, and Sloan, just to name a few.
I can't wait until the day schools are over-funded and the military is forced to hold bake sales to buy planes.

Hey, that's absolutely true. But for every band you mention there are about a thousand others much more interested in cracking that piggy bank below the 49th, and fair play to them! For the record, Matt Good is not exactly what you'd call a hit factory (even in Canada) and Sloan (bless them) have seen their sales decline over the years as well. Even the Hip aren't playing to capacity houses across Canada anymore.
But really now be honest, what's the point of "being big in Canada" when you can rack up royalties with producer credits on acts like Gwen Stefani?
