Edmonton has that as well. AND it is quite nice having clean air to breathe at a bar and restaurants and such.
actually edmonton only has that for all restaurants, the bars are still to come next year.
I think it's a great idea. As Rob already mentioned this law is sweeping through Ontario and I'm all for it. When I go to a restaurant I don't need to have my food smelling and tasting like smoke (Tim Hortons is bad for this).
I'm glad to see this turned into another anarchist thread... The fact is that this will be healthier for the entire population. It may eventually cause many smokers to quit smoking, and I can't see how that's a bad thing for the general public or the smoker.

Jim, just because you can't smoke in a bar doesn't mean people will stop smoking. They will probably still smoke in the bar, because there isn't a cop there handing out tickets all the time. And people will smoke because they're addicted, not because it's what to do when you're out with your friends.
And this isn't a great idea. You're taking the rights away from the smoker to smoke. Sure, if the building chose to be a non-smoking environment, then you can't smoke there, but if not, you have no right to take away the right for people to smoke in a building where it's usually permitted.
What it comes down to is the fact that if you can't handle smoke in a bar, then don't go to a bar. You're killing yourself by going there to drink anyway, so why should anyone give a shit about some smoke? If it's that bad, then go home and drink.

I go to a restaurant for dinner. The guy beside me is chain smoking. Should I have to be submitted to this? No. Should I have to leave the restaurant? No. It's his smoke that is the problem. The bylaw is to protect people like me from having to breathe in the smoke of others.
What are his choices? Wait until after his meal, then step outside for a smoke. Maybe light one up on the way to his car after dinner. No big deal.
my city got that law last year, everyone made a HUGE deal out of it at first, claiming that retraunts would lose bussines but in the long run we actually haven't lost any, people eventually get used to it and it just become the norm, besides it isn't like people are going to stop going out entirly because of it. And you wouldn't think that there's that much diffrence untill you feel what it's like after the law is passed, it never really bothered me alot before, but when i walked into a smoke free restraunt for the firsttime it smelled soooo much better, i never even noticed that the smoke made such a diffrence

Simple solution. If you sit in the non-smoking section of the restaurant, then you wouldn't have to worry about smoke all that much. You might get a faint whiff of it, but it's not a problem. That's why they make smoking sections, so if you don't like smoke, you can be on the other side of the building and not have to worry about it.

The joys of living in an anal retentive society. People smoke, get over it. One person's second-hand smoke will not kill you.

I was saying that being in a smoke filled room once wouldn't be enough to kill you....
And get this people, no matter how hard you try, there's always going to be people doing things that you don't like. You just can't go and ban everything that you don't like. I don't like people drinking, but we all know how well prohibition worked. I am sure someone here doesn't like people spitting, but you can't ban that. When it comes down to it, you can't hide behind the law for things like this. People are going to do what they want. Getting a meager fine isn't going to be enough to stop people smoking in public places.

But if these employees can't handle cigarette smoke, then why are they working in places like a bar in the first place? Like it was previously said, it should be up to the buildings to decide if they want smoking or not. The government shouldn't step in and say all buildings must be smoke free. That's going too far. If a place doesn't want people to smoke, then they can make it to where no one smokes. Not that hard.

Sometimes people have no choice but to work in these conditions. They need a source of income. Should their job result in them losing a a couple years of their life?

i actually spent all day at this tobacco and alcohol thing to get my certificate to sell....worst 6 hours of my life.
the lady running this circus show was from California, and she said that they had this law put in some time back. and that buisness at bars rose, despite estimates that it would have put them out of buisness. she went on about certain parks and such that tend to smokers needs and so on, since you know california usually has nice weather. new york on the other hand......whoa.
Whenever death may surprise us, let it be welcome if our battle cry has reached even one receptive ear and another hand reaches out to take up our arms.
Nobody's gonna miss me, no tears will fall, no ones gonna weap, when i hit that road. my boots are broken my brain is sore, fer keepin' up with thier little world, i got a heavy load. gonna leave 'em all just like before, i'm big city bound, your always 17 in your hometown
i know there are people that avoid certain bars because of smoke, and really, if your desparate for a job you take what you can get, they shouldn't have to be put in a health risk just to make a living, believe me, we have it here, and people just get used to it, anyone who can't go with out smoking for one hour needs has bigger problems then getting a cigarette with there meal. At one point you could smoke in hospitals....could any of you even imagine that now? Same thing with restraunts, it just gets to the point where people are used to it, 10 years from now, new smokers will never have known anything diffrent

Well, the fact of the matter is, you can't quite just step outside from a bar to smoke. They make you pay to get in the place, and if you want to smoke, you would have to step outside and walk away from the crowds just to light up a smoke. Then what happens when you want back in? It's not like these bars stamp your hand so you can walk outside or anything, and I am sure the bouncer doesn't give a shit if you get back in or not, he wants your money. So why can't these bars have their own regulations about smoking? If they want people to smoke in there, then it's their choice, not the government to make them adhere to.

actually since the change, the bars here do use a way of telling who's paid, and since so many people are leaving to smloke they don't have to stand alone, they just conregate somewhere and smoke, then go back in
