I remember that too. They were always stuck at #3 though because nsync and Backstreet Boys were numbers 1 and 2.

I think you guys let media curve your musical taste a little too much.

'mainstream' is such a generic term...it could mean so many different things...there could be an album that hardly anyones heard of thats totally unique and whatnot...then it starts selling lots of copies and then all of a sudden its considered mainstream. who cares whats mainstream? how about liking something cause its good...not because its popular or not
"Sh*t, id be f*ckin' scared if us were opening for...us"
-Dave Grohl on why the Red Hot Chili Peppers only let the Foos play a 45 minute set when they toured together

"baby, i wish you were my baby,
ill make u make a baby,
let's make electric power,
in fear u should not cower,
cuz girl i will protect u,
i promise not to sex u,
and IiiiiIiiiiIiiiiiiIiiiiiIiiiiii...." - Dudez a Plenti

"all by myself
cause I don’t want to drag you down, hold you down
cause you’re a friend
i blame myself
i guess you think it’s funny now, funny now
it's such a shame..."
-Feeder - Just a Day

I think labels in general influence people too much and that's pretty sad. As soon as you name a band you like people are like, Oh they're sellouts, they're not punk, eww too popular, mainstream, she's a poser and blah blah blah .. I don't pay attention to the labels anymore. It's no longer about the music, it seems to be all about what the media tells you to like. :|

That's friken right!

Mainstream could mean anything. And if OLP have gone mainstream(they haven't) who cares. It's not their fault or anything. And if they make more fans, great. And if they make a bit more money... good for them. They deserve more play, more fans and more money, they've worked so hard for the past 10 years and anything good that comes to them, they deserve. Be happy for them!

No offence to anyone.

I think you missed the point of bort's post.
He's saying that the term mainstream is so generic it shouldn't even be used to describe ANY form of music. By saying "if OLP have gone mainstream" you imply that it is a possibility for band to do so. I think Bort is saying that it's wrong to make that generalization. You even put your 2 cents in to say they haven't gone mainstream. Who says? I think it's important not to label music.

I think you missed the point of my post. I originally posted to say that i agreed with bort's post. The "who cares about mainstream" part. The rest is my opinion on how OLP has supposedly gone mainstream. Why would it matter anyway if they did go mainstream anyway.

As for the 'putting my 2 cents in...'. It's kind of annoying to go on the CC and hear people bashing the band, and then look in some threads here and see people bashing the band. I'm not saying that anyone here in this thread is doing that. Also, this is a messageboard...i can put my 2 cents in whenever i want. You just did that to my post.

You can label it brilliant or shitty, or anything in between, if you want. Labeling it mainstream or underground has it's place, but not as a definition of quality.

Gee whiz...I started this thread as a joke, and people take it SO seriously...

1) I was not bashing the band, nor was anybody else
2) I didn't say it was *bad* to go mainstream or anything else.
3) The only thing that influences my musical taste is if I like it or not. Not who's playing it, or where, what station, ect...

Thankyouverymuch.

I got the point of your post. I'm just confused how you can agree with something you contradict in the next sentence. If it doesn't matter whether or not OLP has gone "mainstream" and it being such a general term, why so quick to say they haven't?
