Why are you being so touchy about it? The thread was describing how one person liked Steve better than Mike. Then other people gave their opinions. That doesn't mean that these people hate Steve, or want to change the topic of this thread. It just means that their opinion differs from yours. Big deal...
When someone starts a topic comparing two people, you can't expect people to only talk about one of them.

the new our lady peace is 1/45th as good as the old our lady peace.
what's changed?
i'm sure Steve Mazur is a great guy and a wicked guitar player, but a. those are mike turners song's he's playing and b. the best song on gravity [ bring back the sun ] would be the worst song on any of the other records.
emtee.org < --- i think that about sums up my position on the mike v steve debate. when our lady peace makes a record with steve playing that sounds anywhere close to as good as the ones they made with emtee, then i might rethink my stance.

I have one question for you and anyone else.
Would you guys dislike Gravity as much if it was Mike on it and not Steve. If Mike remained with them and it was him playing would you guys still think this album wasn't up to snuff with their other cds?
I am just curious. I think alot of people don't like this cd because Mike isn't on it. Me I really dig this cd, but this isn't about me.

I really like Gravity .. with or without Mike .. but I don't miss Mike at all and I wasn't upset with Mike leaving. I'm very happy with Steve and I doubt Gravity would have been as good with Mike since Mike didn't like the way they were going with Gravity. When you're not happy with a record then you're not going to enjoy playing the songs as much. Steve came along at a really good time
He loves what he's doing, he's happy, he's talented and he shows it .. there's a whole new energy with the band now that was lacking before.

if mike was playing on the record it probably wouldn't sound the way it does. if they had stuck to playing the style of music that satisfied mike [ and me ] i wouldn't be complaining, and mike probably wouldn't have left.
----
i've seen our lady peace play 5 shows with mike turner present and i would not say they were anywhere close to lacking "energy". this "he limited us"/"we lacked energy"/"he didn't want to be heard" stuff is just a limp dick cop-out from admitting that they wanted to sell more records, which is the reality we need to deal with. i'd say the guitar prescence on a song like, o i don't know, "starseed" or "made to heal", for instance is alot more noticeable then on "all for you".
there was nothing wrong with mike turner's guitar playing. i find it highly ironic that raine will say that mike "didn't want to be heard" when this record, the one without mike, has the least guitar prescence of any of them.

I saw 3 shows with Mike and 1 show with Steve and I felt much more energy coming off that stage with Steve than I ever felt with Mike .. Mike was an awesome guitar player but so is Steve. From what I've heard and seen Steve plays every show like it's his last and that makes for an incredible sounding show on his end.

Sure the shows with Mike were good .. but I paid absolutely no attention to Mike at those shows .. I tried to get either in front of Raine or Duncan. Mike was just there, that's it. When I saw Steve play, I was right in front of him and I watched him most of the show cuz he was amazing. The passion and the energy he brought to that show blew me away .. I can't say that about watching Mike play ..

I seen shows with both Mike and Steve. I have also met both of them.
They are two entirely different types of players and have different styles. Do I notice a difference. I hate to say it but no. I thought I would but I don't.
While I do not take away from Mike and what he brought to the band live and on CD. I can see the energy the band feels they have now. I don't think it really had anything to do with Mike or Steve. I think they just finally found thier potential.
I love the shows now, but I loved the shows last year. I think that OLP has finally come into their own now. They are tighter live and they seem to enjoy it more.
But as you said it is a matter of opinion. I still love the band and their performances. I also think Steve is doing an amazing job considering the pressure he was under. Let's face it the fans are always the toughest critics and I have to say for most part alot of fans are accepting of Steve.

I wish people would stop saying that Steve is 'just doing Mike's work' cuz he's doing more than that .. I think each musician adds something different and I can plainly see that in Steve
The intro's and solo's I've heard him do has proven he's quite capable of doing some excellent work.

I really want to hear Steve do a record. After listening to the live Naveed/Life intro that he did, I think his work could be just as great as Mikes, but in a completely different way...
Steve is not *playing just Mike's work. have you heard his intro to Starseed. Mike neve played that intro. Also have you heard him on Not Enough. Killer.
I don't notice much difference in the Mike songs as to Gravity songs./
I am getting a little tired of this Mike songs/Steve songs thing. it is OLP plain and simple. you either like them or don't.
I for one love them. I love the live shows, I love the CD and I love the guys.
For me it is the OLP corporation I love and It is the indiviuals that make up the corporartion that I love.

I was just thinking that maybe you didn't notice a difference because Steve's just adding onto Mike's stuff. And I don't care if someone's tired of hearing that, because it's the truth. Yes, he does add his own flare, but it's all based on Mikes original songs.
And I don't doubt that Steve is great. I've heard the Naveed/Life and I was astounded...

ooo, ouch this thread is really heating up, so I think I'm ready to put in my own input. I, too, would like to hear how OLP's music sounds on the next album, not because I think Steve or Mike is better, but because I would just like to hear what Steve can do when writing his own guitar music without chaos around him. I agree with many others that Gravity sounds different from the other OLP albums, but at the time of making, OLP was in a time of transition. I'm really curious to hear what the next album will sound like because they will be settled down by then, and hopefully, not making any more personnel changes.
I don't think that Gravity is as good as some of the older albums(Happiness...), but I don't necessarily think that is Steve's fault. I think that the confusion the band was going through is displayed in some of the music, none-the-less, Gravity is still a super album in comparison to most of today's rock music. In my opinon Steve=great guitarist and Mike=great guitarist, but Steve does not = Mike in style, and therefore any comparison being made about which one is better is strictly a matter of opinion, but I can't call you guys out on it too much because isn't that what the message board is for? sharing opinions. it's threads like this and differences of opinion that make CM so interesting

I don't mean that I didn't notice a difference because Steve is playing Mike's work. As someone said. Stop saying that. Steve is playing OLP's work and if you want to get technical here isn't it mostly Raine's work. Look at your CD booklets kiddie. It said words and Music R Maida.
