so after a week of listening to burn burn here are my thoughts;
i find it to be a really solid straight up rock record. steve really nails it on most tracks, so impressed by his creative juices this time round. don't really get people saying that raine is lacking emotion in his voice.. apart from the verses on AYD, think he sounds darn good personally.. especially taking into consideration the style of his voice and age, that's going to restict anyone from the voice they had 10 years previous.. some people just have to deal with that it seems. jer's drumming on refuge is some of the best drumming i've heard from him in years. really think duncans the unsung hero of the album.. really nails it, and the bassline in monkey brains is so simple but genius.
so yeah really enjoy this album, if I were to rate it i'd give it a 4.5/5.. really think the right stuff should've been added in there along with 'the end..'.. although not liking time bomb all that much.. chorus is really, really weak.. also, favourite tracks right now are refuge, paper moon and escape artist. good stuff guys. good stuff.
also on a different note.. i really don't get all this love the 'first four' get. i personally think clumsy is olp's worst effort, just my opinion though before people get all defensive

Oh, I didn't read the rest of the thread, so I missed your point. But good point!
Yeah, singing is a big factor for me in appreciation of any music. These days I can barely listen to something if the singing is done badly. It'll bug the crap out of me. (I used to love The Weakerthans "Left and Leaving" but now whenever I hear it I just wanna yell "SING ON THE VOWEL DAMMIT!").
I just know Raine can sing better. I've heard it. And it's not for lack of voice that it's sounding off, he's just not using it right. Sadsadsad.

But I'm not saying his voice is worn out. I'm saying it sounds to me like he's not putting effort and concentration into using the voice he has to create a good sound. It's an entirely different matter.
It's not the quality of his voice, it's how he's using it. From what I can tell. (gonna go back and triple-check now)

you just have to look at the setlists they're playing.. a real lack of happiness/sm going on.. fact is raine is no longer comfortable singing in a higher key often.. if raine was to attempt to sing the way that some of you want.. well.. the poor guy might not have a voice in 5 years time. its what age and touring does to you unfortunately. but i still think he has one of the most emotive and effective voices in music today. so i personally don't mind the progressive change. just wish some of you would stop expecting so much, but ah well.

Just to clarify, I'm criticizing his technique, not his voice itself or the way he writes his vocal lines (although I would LOVE lots of falsetto, I can understand him not wanting to do that anymore). Also, tuning isn't something that wears out with age. Just sayin'.

^I actually agree with you on that. A lot of what I find a big turn off to Burn Burn is the flat chords that really stand out.

all i want is lots of gooey cheese a shit load of jalapenos. mike's gone now and the music he's making isn't all that great. let's leave it at that.
I love Burn Burn, but then I also liked Gravity & HiPT. There isn't a track on this record that I wouldn't want to listen to. Favourites are Paper Moon, White Flags, Escape Artist and Monkey Brains.

That was the grossest metaphor I've ever heard, and now I will never have nachos again.

I second that..

I really love this cd.. If you take away Raine's voice and lyrics for a minute and just listen to the bass, drums and guitars it really is kick ass.. They have a tight sound..
Say what you will about Raine. I do agree. He is not the same live as he was before,. Then again I do not expect him to be.He sounded amazing at Irving.. Much better then I heard him on some vids from previous shows..
I feel love, I feel a power. It comes to me in the darkest hour. And I want to feel it again

Yeah, I think I really like the overall sound of the album. It's just really hard to "take away Raine's voice and lyrics" for me. I think it'd be a lot easier to enjoy this cd if I wasn't a singer.
It's really growing on me though. I think it'll be like HiPT in that I'll grow to love it, but there'll always be aspects that bother me.
