Burn Burn, thoughts?

Post by gambit07 »

Well since the other thread was shut down I thought I'd open a new one for people to give their thoughts on Burn Burn now that we've officially heard it :) Personally I think it's great. HIPT for me was hard to listen too, and is by far my least listened to album by olp. I actually am a big fan of gravity, even though it might be a little more mainstream I really like a lot of the songs especially Bring Back The Sun. Anyway all that to say I really like LISTENING to burn burn which is a huge improvement over hipt for me...

I made a listing on the other thread and I can't decide yet between Naveed and Burn Burn

1. Car Crash
2. Spiritual Machines
3. Happiness
4. The rest of Clumsy (lol)
5. Naveed / Burn Burn (a tie)
6. Gravity
7. HIPT

The new album is just amazing... my favorite song is Escape Artist, but Monkey Brains, Never get Over You, Dreamland and White Flags in particular are also all fucking awesome... I'm loving the entire album.

GO OLP!!!!!!!! :D

Burn, Burn

Post by EscapeArtist »

I, for one, am fairly impressed. I wasn't a big fan of Gravity, or HIPT compared to Naveed, Spiritual Machines and everything in between, but as stand-alone albums they're strong. Burn, Burn is definitely growing on me with every listen.

By the way does anyone feel like AYDWSML and Where are you are nearly identical in the sense they they're both radio-friendly singles placed on albums where they really don't fit with the rest of the scheme?

The singles that came out before seemed to fit in with the albums a lot better...

Yeah I agree with you, Where are you didn't exactly fit in with hipt either and I'm definitely not a fan of AYD

As far as rating the albums, nothing can touch the rawness of naveed to me, I just love pretty much everything off that album :) but I would say

1. Naveed
2. Clumsy
3. Happiness Is Not A Fish That You Can Catch
4. Spiritual Machines
5. Gravity
6. Burn Burn
7. Healthy In Paranoid Times

Even though Burn Burn is lower I still like it a lot, There's just nothing that can touch the first 5 to me, I would probably put Clumsy second even if it ONLY had car crash on it... :P

Really? Gravity over Burn Burn? I disagree but I respect your opinion, Somewhere Out There is a really catchy song :P

1. Clumsy A
2. Spiritual Machines/Happiness... A-
3. Burn Burn B+
4. Gravity B
5. Naveed C
6. Healthy C -

Never was the biggest fan of Naveed. The least listened to CD... I love particular songs, but not the album.

This is also subject to change, being I change quite often, but this is the general consensous.

I think it's Steve that mostly makes Burn Burn an exceptional album... damn... why didn't they let him go this apeshit for the last 2 albums? As much as I loved Emtee, I'm sure Steve would have been just as capable of playing for the first 4 albums.

Steve added the element which I have missed the most over the last few cds, if gravity sounded like this I would have liked it regardlesss if it was too poppy mainstream

Yeah, honestly I've never seen what everyones big problem with gravity is, I really like it. Even though raine kind of got rid of the falsetto and the arrangements were a little more mainstream I still feel like that's the last album where he really had that edge to his voice which I loved. All For You, Sorry, Not Enough, Bring Back The Sun and Do You Like It are all favorites of mine. I like the stuff on burn burn a lot, but to me it's just missing the edge that really made me love those first 5 albums

Yeah I agree with you gambit about raine's voice in Gravity... but what brings Burn Burn ahead of Gravity for me is Steve's great guitar work and the originality of the songs... and Raine does go a little classic in Paper Moon... but I do prefer Gravity way over HIPT, probably for the voice reason that you mentioned

yeah! I'm not talking about the radio singles, those were poppy as hell even if they were catchy.. Just listen to let's say.. Do You Like It, it really sounds like he's singing it like he really believes it, like it means something to him. I just never got that feeling with HIPT. His voice just has that edge.. I agree I like the originality of the songs in Burn Burn and the guitar work but raines voice is what really made me love olp and although it's good on Burn Burn, too me it's not AS good. As far as straightforward rock albums go, Gravity is way up there for me.
