On first listen, this is an amazing, amazing album... It tops HIPT and Gravity by a longshot for me.

(Would anyone object to me posting a link to the proxy site i used to listen, for other non-Canadians?)

We shouldn't risk this thread getting deleted like the other one... so I'd say we should limit conversation here to just the album itself

Just to continue about the album... I think the only thing preventing this album from advancing over Naveed for me is Raine's voice... I think he could have at least tried for some classic paranoid falsetto here and there throughout the album... that would have pushed it over the edge for me because the songs are just AMAZING

I only really have two complaints with this album.

1. I really wish they didn't release AYD as the lead single. It's such a poor representation of what this album is.

2. It's too damn short!!

Other than that.... it's sounding pretty darn good. We've always seen Steve shred on the live shows.. but this is the first time we've seen that translate into the studio. He killed some of these tracks. Loving White Flags, Dreamland, Escape Artist (seriously how good is this track), Monkey Brains, Paper Moon.

I think it's EASILY better than the last two albums. Not sure how it compares to the first four just yet. That said, if you realize that it's been almost a decade since SM (and 15+ since Naveed)... you come to realize that bands and people change so I'm alright with it.

I think the thing that hits home for me is the fact that I'm getting some of the same 'chills' from listening to Monkey Brains and Escape Artist that I got when I first heard Naveed in 96. Pretty telling for myself anyways.

I was playing it near where Obama spoke today. He spoke at the college I go to, and I blasted it. So you could say Obama had a taste of OLP.

...oh dear again for that comment.

yes, i've heard it. i do tend to listen before i judge music. most of us 'old members' do actually listen to olp's new stuff before we comment on it.

i've got to wrap my thoughts together a bit better before i can say more...but my original '...oh dear' still stands. take it how you want.

Yeah, I admire u guys for being able to actually WAIT til the album comes out to judge the music , us newbies usually comment wayyy to early (see: when the clip of AYD was released).

But im assuming you're not liking the new album? Let us know what u think once uve wrapped ur thoughts together though

Fuck being new or old, that makes no difference. It's the same band, we all heard the same music. Just because someone posts on a message board more or for longer, doesn't validate it anymore.

I think the difference is minor, but still significant enough. The older members have lived through the releases of the previous albums so have a wider perspective... but than again many "newbies" here have still been listening since 1995... but I'm an example of a newbie that only got into OLP in 2006. I guess I shouldn't have spoken for EVERYONE, sorry.

haha yeah how long you've posted on a board doesn't really matter, but how long you have actually heard the band will definitely influence how you look at their material. I've been listening since the beginning but I still love gravity even though a lot of die hard olp'ers think differently.. in the end it's all just a matter of perspective and everybody thinks differently, I'm sure there are even some people who love hipt out there :P As long as you enjoy it that's all that matters
