"Innocent" on American Idol
the give back thing has absolutely nothing to do with Raine - it is very coincidental that Raine has been giving back a lot lately. It would have been incredibly cool had he written that and meant it in the same way.
Give back is all about tonights Idol Gives Back show where all the 'stars' are going to get america to give money .
As for singing rock songs, I think he should have. He has been singing lots of rocky songs. I think the problem exists in which song can be cut down to the minute thirty slot they get.

I knew what the Give Back thing was for - my whole opinion of it is that he's being a giant douche in trying to emulate Raine so much. The hand in the air? Totally Raine. The hand to the camera? Even more Raine.
I agree about the rock song thing - he could have sang a rock song and people would have gone wild. You guys say they're not looking for rock, they want pop, then why do they let them play Queen or AC/DC or other rock legends? Look at how far Daughtry got a couple seasons ago (or was it last season?), look at all the rock that's going on on the show this season. He could have picked a much better song.
And yes, Somewhere Out There would have been a good choice. My other choice for an upbeat inspirational song would have been Life, and he probably could have done a much better job on that song than he did on Innocent, the douchebag.
He let the rave reviews of his cover of Chris Cornell's version of Billie Jean get to his head - notice though that he had to admit he uses other people's arrangements though? He got so much praise for it for doing such a "unique" arrangement, that he had to admit it wasn't even his own. I don't care that he used someone else's version of it, but at least admit it first thing like what's-his-name did with Somewhere Over The Rainbow last night.

Yup, because Raine has never once attempted to emulate Bono at any point during his career.
I disagree that Life would have been a better choice.. I think it was more or less just a bad performance due to the pressure of trying to fill the shoes of his favourite band. The dude can sing. There's no denying that. I just don't think the song choice was the issue. It was just a REALLY off night..

That was bizarre.
The guy started badly, but got a little better, but he was trying too hard to be Raine.
I missed Jer's drumming, and I was thinking to myself that the backing singers were really cheesy and then realised that the little kids singing on the original were more cheesy.

Open your eyes to nights and days, you close them up and float away
and somehow inbetween you've got to master lying to yourself
you back the cause, get out of school, you get a job, the job gets you
and somehow every day you end up serving somebody else
now if that ain't panic that you're feeling, then you damn well better start
you can drive it into that head of yours with the hammer in your heart.
And it's alriiiiiiiight now, take the world and make it yours again.

edit: i do agree, illusion. innocent and swot are among the poppiest songs OLP's done, and probably the more acceptable ones, but i don't think a rockier song would've gone over badly if he sang it well. to reiterate what you said before you edited your post, i think starseed would've been a good choice too.
Yea you see, I was thinking about the fact that Starseed was in Armageddon and it would be popular with an American group (plus it was what we consider to actually be a "good" OLP song

But by just looking at youtube views for OLP vids, I can't really see any significant popularity for songs other then Innocent and SOT, and for that kind of performance I just think you need to be singing a song people have heard and can relate to.
I know it doesn't sound like what OLP fans would hope for; however, I'm actually excited that they even got recognized on this show. I'm not a fan, but its huge no matter how you look at it.
Flame me. I don't care. Just my opinion.

No, that's true, that show's ratings were at one time record breaking... not so much anymore, but it's still cool that they were mentioned or promoted on such a grand scale... I mean, it wasn't Canadian Idol... which well... okay I don't like any of the Idol shows, but American Idol is still billions of times more popular.

I don't really know why you guys hated it so much.
It would be a really stupid thing to try to mimic every note. He sang it like he sings. And I thought he did a decent job. It was a fairly forgettable performance for Idol, but you guys seem to be really horrified at it. He was pretty solid.
The only really horrific thing was the hand at the camera deal. God that looked horrible.

Goodbye you liar,
Well you sipped from the cup but you don't own up to anything
Then you think you will inspire
Take apart your head
(and I wish I could inspire)
Take apart your demons, then you add it to the list.

i think i have to agree with the hobo. David has an amazing voice and in past weeks has really stepped it up. He started off in some weird register and it took me a while to recover from that. I will have to agree with Simon on this one, he didnt do the song or himself any justice. Maybe I will listen again because i do respect S and S's opinions.

Well, I agree that he didn't do great. He obviously knows the show and should have prepared more, because it was too off-the-cuff for a show like Idol, however I don't think its fair to say its horrendous. If that little prepubescent kid did the song, that would probably be horrendous. He did alright with it. Its a hard song to pull off if you don't have a super nasal voice.

Good point. Which is why I don't think the song choice was the problem. Beyond the whole "American Idol likes mediocre pop songs" thing, Innocent or SOT were probably the two most logical choices based on his range and what he's capable of pulling of. 'Cause like you said, if you don't have a super nasal voice, you only make yourself sound even more ridiculous by digging deeper into their catalogue.

So unfortunately David Cook did not go home tonight, which I'm mad about because someone I liked more did. Stupid America. *boos it*
