I'm assuming they will do a dual disc release also, perhaps it may have 1 or 2 goodies on it, but nothing major I'm guessing. It aggrivates me that there wouldn't be any other unreleased material. I'm not surprised at all, just bothered.

$17.99 US is right around the average price in all stores anywhere near everywhere I've ever lived. But I buy a lot of mine from yourmusic.com now -- yay $5.99 per CD.

Actually I just bought three cd's last weekend and all three were 21.99 from HMV... the biggest HMV in Canada at that. It's quite common to pay that much for albums that aren't in high demand.
A "best of" album is pretty much one of two things. 1) a special thing that is made for the fans, containing a bunch of extras that would make it worth buying an album of already released material (see MG for a perfect example, but there are countless others... I just don't buy Best Of's so I can't name them off the top of my head) or 2) A money grab for the record company and maybe the band depending on the record deal.
Take a guess at which one I think this album falls under?

Just because it's not specifically for fans doesn't make it bad.
Sure, most of us don't have much use for a greatest hits cd. We have all the other ones.
But if I was a new fan, a greatest hits cd would probably be the first thing I went for. They're useful. It's like an easy acces to a variety of a bands music. Then you know what cd to go for next!

I agree with your point on it being a good way to gain new fans. If the right tracks are compiled, it is a very good tool to guage a band's catalogue.
However this album will be quick ring at the register for casual fans who have stumbled upon OLP in the last 3 years, and also a fulfillment of thier contractual obligation to Sony BMG. It goes back to the whole deal of needing money to pay bills. Nothing wrong with that.
2 bonus tracks along with 15-17 previously released tracks is a disappointment to a lot of fans who have been craving an encompassing set from the band for a long time. For me, personally, I had hoped they would put out a set similar to Matthew Good. It would satisfy longtime fans, and allow them to close a chapter of their career and start a new one.
For a lot of us, the Matt Good set is a perfect example of how a greatest hits compilation should be done. But one thing that I liked about his set was the deluxe version with all the bells and whistles, and then he had a standard version which didn't include the acoustic tracks and the dvd. It had his radio singles and 2 bonus tracks, which is what our OLP set will likely have. For the casual fan, this would be great. However a lot of people would have been overjoyed for a 3 disc set. Me in particular.

This greatest hits album sounds like to me, as if the record company is trying to make as much money out of the band as possible, before they possibly break from them, join another label and release the next studio album. This sort of thing has happened before with other bands and the same thing seems to be happening here. I don't find it a coincidence that a greatest hits album is coming out a couple of months after news broke out that OLP were trying to break from their label.
I wouldn't be surprised to see OLP release another greatest hits album with plenty of unreleased material and extras in the future, with a record label that they are actually happy to stay with and make money for.

And a Greatest Hits doesn't necessarily mean a band is breaking up, but it's amusing to watch fans squirm when one is announced. There's been word that the Foo Fighters are going to release a greatest hits. Are they breaking up? Probably not. It just means they've released enough albums to warrant one, and the record company and the band can make some extra dough. Why do you think Greatest Hits albums are released closer to the end of the year? Hmm... hard to say. Can't quite put my finger on it....

Greatest Hits aren't meant for the fans anyway, really, unless you're some OCD collector. They are meant for casual fans or for people looking into getting into a band. B-Side and rarities albums are meant for fans, but record companies hardly ever release though. Oh, but how it would be nice if they did that more...

Woah, seriously? I don't think I've ever seen a CD for $17.99. Perhaps at Borders because they're overprice, but even then it would be $15.99 at most. Wow. I think the average CD price here is 9.99 - 12.99.

At the beat goes on used cds sell for the same price as new cds....or more. Which is why I rarely ever go there, maybe if I need a rare cd or something.

<----------------- click and listen!Hopefully they'll remaster or re-record bits and pieces. That's what the Hip did on their recent "Hipepinonymous" collection. Johnny Fay's drums really came through decent sounding, which I thought was a nice touch because the original "Fully Completely" drums and guitars always sounded so late 80s to me. Some of those tracks sound like instrumental scores to Neon Rider!
Anyway, I'll be looking forward to a retrospective if they do it right. Although I agree with some that this whole thing sort of screams out: "CONTRACTUAL OBLIGATION!"
