HIPT Discussion Thread For Those Who Waited.
OK, i listened to the album very attentively for the 3rd time and i noticed more things...
I still can't get into Love and Trust, nor do i feel any interest to listen to it more and more (unlike songs by say, wilco, or ime, which i dont get right away but i am intrigued to listen over and over, and later i learn to love the song). And boy seems too u2esque in a way, big universal bonolike lyricsdom. NOT saying that it's bad but i dont think i will learn to love the vague lyrics for Boy.
Al Genina was better than ever, but i don't think i love it as much as some people on this board.. which got me sad because i really want to love more songs on this album. I hear the haunting sounds and the simple lyrics but... i don't hear much out of it.
Also, i have to say that WIC and WTSOYF are so very overproduced... when i first listened to those 2 i had to skip them because i was almost like, 'eeeeehhh'. i listened to these carefully the most and they are well crafted, but i think repetition and lack of vocal challenges (other than the part in smile where it goes 'this is warrrrr........', which i absolutely adore) have got me bored before it really ends. they will have to grow on me, although i don't really see that happening as of now. i really wish they didn't have keyboards in wtsoyf because a more ad-lib guitar thing would have been more kick-ass. it sounds too... measured. also, these two songs contain lyrics that do not really appeal to me, and i think raine could have made himself more eloquent if he didnt describe his anger in such a big, sweeping, fuck-you way. hmm... yeah, i hope that made sense.
If i could delete any one song off this album, it would have to be Don't Stop. it sounds too gravity, especially the build up to the chorus, then the chorus itself. and the very ending and raine says the last lyric, it was too close to the gravity formula for my liking.
on a happiner note, I adore Angels, Future, Picture, Al Genina, Apology and even Where Are You more and more as i listen. The bridges for so many songs, they take my breath away!! i dont' know what it is about these bridges. they are some of the most 'suspenseful' bridges i've heard... i think. I think Raine's vocals are shown off best in Angels, Al Genina, and Apology (all A's!). World on a string is a fun song, and even though its chorus sounds like a formula, it is different, with the piano and all, and some lyrics from WOAS i really like.
phew.

I bet we could tell who's albums were signed in what order just by comparing all of Raine's signatures.
Nam's was definitely last.

I really like this album, all the songs on it. Love & Trust is a great tune. There is some good guitar on this album, but it's not quite MT good.
One thing I noticed that i didn't see many people comment on is that most of the songs don't really climax. They are mellow and sort of somber and held back from first verse to last verse. Even in the hooks, I keep waiting for Raine to raise his voice or for somebody, ANYBODY, to start playing really loud. Never really happens.
I'm sure that live they'll turn it up for these songs, but why not kick a little more ass in the studio? HELLO, you're a rock band!
That said I'm not hating on this record because i really like it and it is in my opinion a lot better than Gravity. Chris and I have been talking about the album a lot and I would have to say that it stands with their original body of work, but it's not as good as the first four albums.
Axtech i think said something to the effect of that old OLP takes his breath away. same here brother. I like every song on HIPT but there is no Starseed or Julia on it, no Superman's Dead or Clumsy, no Blister or Stealing Babies and basically nothing even close to the worst song on SM.
It's a good album but I can't rank it higher than fifth.

I completely agree on a sense of supression with the bands ability to go all out instrumentaly and vocally, but I have to say this is still one of their best efforts and compares perfectely to the original sound of Clumsy, Happiness and Spiritual Machines. This CD has some of their best work. Angels/Losing/Sleep, Will the Future Blame Us? and Picture are songs that rank easily in the top 10. They're very moody and show that the band still has it in them to be clever. Steve isn't as good as Mike, and it's true, Mike knew how to compiment Raine's vocals with unique sounds while Steve seems very mainstream when it comes to guitar work, but he does do a really good job with a handful of songs in the new CD and makes it sound as close to if not on par with the older guitar work. He still needs time to warm up in my opinion but I think he's fitting in nicely and I like him.
I think a lot of the supression in expression with the latest CDs does have to do with Bob Rock. I myself don't like him all too much and think he's limiting the boys (I think they're noticing it to, what with all the fights and arguments that went on during the making of this CD) but they wanted to try something new and felt they could get more out of working with him, and this album shows they can, but Bob still has a way of having them sound held back. Hopefully they'll try a new producer next who'll understand them as well as Arnold did.
One thing that should be noted is that these new songs live are way more energetic and expressed more passionetly than on the CD.
That's all I have to say, PEACE and LOVE.

"I'll never get over you."
I think they definitly had their issues with Arnold too though.
They said if they made any records with Arnold, they wouldnt be able to continue, so they definitly had their issues.
When I first heard of Bob Rock working with OLP, this music is definitly what I excpected, thats not a bad thing At all though!
