I kept tabs on this thread before the album came out so I knew which songs to listen to when it actually came out and the general consensus was that Al Genina was just mind-blowing, but I don't see it. I mean, it's good, but I keep waiting for drums or something to come through, but it never happens.

I think one of the things that makes Al Genina so beautiful is its simplicity.

Angels Losing Sleep is my favourite thus far.

After giving the album several listens through, I think I am very happy with this album. The time they spent working on it was worth it, and it's a big step up from the last album in my opinion. From the moment we got the clips Angels/Losing/Sleep was my favorite track, but now I'd have to say that Al Genina may be my favorite. It's a genuinely written song from the heart, and after finding out Raine was seriously considering leaving his wife and newborn child behind in Canada so he could stay in the Sudan and help makes the song even more powerful. This is Raine's new Thief. The rest of the album seems on level as far as how much I enjoy the songs. Apology might be my next favorite. It's so simple lyrically, but the music is calming and peaceful. I really like that. Wipe That Smile Off Your Face blew me away when the guitars kick in so heavy on the bridge and at the end when they pick up again and Raine goes crazy with the falsettos and such. It just drained me. The World On A String was the one clip that I hated when we heard it on PromoSquad, but it really grew on my with Duncan's funky bass work at the beginning of it. It's just a fun song. I liked that the songs had a different sound to them than past albums. For me, it's dull to hear the same music or lyrics from one album to the next. The two themes I see this album being about are, of course, political and social turmoil, and I really think that some of the songs are for Rowan. I think they did a great job on this album, and in my rankings it probably falls in between Clumsy and Naveed I think. Well worth the wait.

Hey Matt, nice review. Where did you hear about Raine thinking of leaving is family behind? And...which songs did you feel were for Rowan?

He mentions it on the documentary in the dual disc. It's towards the end. I think in the radio interview with George Stroumbolopoplolpooiooo;koijfafja;lkfafafjpolychronopolous they talked about Raine wanting to stay and help out.

Threre were two that I can see being about Rowan. I felt like Boy was for Rowan, obviously. But I also felt like Apology was about him too. I can see it as what Raine feels every time he has to go on the road or just every time he has to be away from him.

I can definitely see that - I'd say you're probably right on that, Matt...

I got my signed HIPT today!

Raine must have signed quite a few before mine though, because it looks like he wrote "Ron".

Gotta love OLP. Steve, Duncan, Jeremy and Ron.

OKAY SO I FINALLY GOT TO HEAR THE ALBUM.

it was somewhat what i expected but not what i expected at the same time. the songs that popped out for me were the ones that i had heard before (therefore i think i need to listen to it more) like angels, future, picture, apology. i have only listened to the full album from end to end about 2 times but what i noticed right away is how i really really love the bridges for so many songs. usually the best parts of the songs are during the verse or chorus, i would expect, but so many bridges surprised me. and that was good.

i think someone mentioned in this thread how they didn't see anything great about al genina - so far from what ive listened (which is twice) i have to agree with them because personally i don't see anything either. it's somewhat haunting but i can't say i love it from the moment i heard it. my absolute favourite is Apology, however, that song just amazing  i am completely in love with the lyrics as well as the vocals in that song. like i said before, it made me feel like i was melting.

i've read so many reviews now and they are all so different, either from people on the CM or from a media source - it's very interesting. i view the album (at least so far) as a mix of 2 sounds, one being the haunting, delicate sound, and the other being mainstream rocky sound. i fit songs like Angels and Pictures and Apology and Al Genina and even Will the future blame us, and sort of Love and Trust into the first category.. while the others sound like songs that kind of fade from the gravityesque sounds (like Don't Stop, Walking in Circles). I can't say i really like WTSOYF or Don't Stop or Walking in Circles just yet.

The songs that are new to me, like Love and Trust and Boy, i don't really have an opinon of yet. Boy sounded amazingly close to u2 in the beginning, though. I don't 'get' love and trust yet and i can't realy understand how there's a thread for the song itself  but maybe it will grow on me.

I like world on a string to a certain degree, but it's somewhat dull after a few listens. After listening to Wipe that smile and Walking in circles and Don't Stop, i can say that I like many songs on this album, but it seems kind of disjointed because some are amazing and some are really not. :P

well that was long but finallly i got to say something about the album.

Alright.

So I listened to it about 3 times through today on my way from my apartment in the city to my house about 45 minutes away and with errands in between. I like it. I really do. But there are songs that I still just don't like. One being Boy. Don't like it. I said before that I didn't like World on a String...it's growing on me. I like the chorus.

Picture is a great song. It really might be close to one of my favorite OLP songs. Walking in Circles is my second favorite. I can just think of it when they played it live in Buffalo, and it was just so powerful. That may be one of the reasons why I like Picture so much too. They opened with that and the guitars in the beginning are just so perfect and beautiful.

So..yeah, I like it. It's like my 3rd favorite OLP album behind SM and Happiness.
