*finds* I WIN!

Queens Of The Stone Age-Someone's In The Wolf

Once you're lost in twillights's blue
You don't find your way, the way finds you...

Tempt the fates, beware the smile
It hides all the teeth, my dear,
What's behind them...

So glad you could stay
Forever

He steps between the trees, a crooked man
There's blood on the blade
Don't take his hand

You warm by the firelight, in twilight's blue
Shadows creep & dance the walls
He's creeping too..

So glad you could stay
Forever

I was actually thinking about buying a new digicam today. I was thinking I could spend about $400 American. I really dislike my old Kodak. It's really a piece of crap, I bought it for $100 and it's just old. 2 mp and 2 zoom. I don't think I really like Kodak all that much.

i posted pics! :O

cass...you should be able to get a good camera for $400 USD. probably 3x optical zoom and 5.0 mps. i'd recommend canon as a brand to check out, with olympus and fujifilm coming in closely behind.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/C ... ontcount=1 <--the canon A95 might do you.

Here's what consumer reports has to say:

Best values for snapshots; compact and simple to use:
3 Canon, $180
11 Fujifilm, $140, CR Best Buy
23 Kodak, $185, CR Best Buy
27 Olympus, $190, CR Best Buy

All of these 3- and 4-megapixel cameras fit in a pocket. The Canon PowerShot A510 (3) stands out for slightly better image quality. The Kodak EasyShare CX7430 (23) and Olympus D-580 Zoom (27) are exceptionally low-priced for 4-megapixel cameras, making them CR Best Buys. So is the Fujifilm FinePix A330 (11), but its availability is limited; it may be easier to find online.

Best values overall if you want to get creative:
4 Canon, $350
33 Fujifilm, $240
40 Olympus, $315

These three combine low price with at least a 5x-zoom range and other features that add flexibility. The Canon PowerShot S1IS (4), a 3-megapixel model, has a very long zoom range and an array of useful features that help justify its relatively high price. The other two are 4-megapixel models, giving them a slight edge over the Canon if you regularly crop and enlarge photos. But both have some minor shortcomings: The Olympus C-5500 (40) Sport Zoom has a long next-shot delay, and the Fujifilm FinePix S3100 (33) is rather bulky.

Best values for creative editing, provided a long zoom range isn't critical to you:
25, 42 Kodak, $240-$250
43 Olympus, $500
49 Nikon, $500
52 Canon, $290, CR Best Buy

This large group consists mainly of 4- and 5-megapixel cameras, typically with a 3x or 4x zoom. Look first to the Kodak EasyShare CX7530 (42) for its low price; it's also PictBridge-compatible and uses AA batteries. The other cameras in this group have assets that make them more versatile, but most have one or another minor shortcoming. The Olympus C-Series C-5060 Wide Zoom (43), Nikon Coolpix 5400 (49), and Canon PowerShot A95 (52) have manual controls but are relatively heavy; all but the Canon use proprietary batteries.

Best choices in point-and-shoots for serious photography:
64 Fujifilm, $310, CR Best Buy
67, 70 Olympus, $280-$620
69 Canon, $545
73 Sony, $365
74 Nikon, $640

If you don't want the expense, weight, or complexity of a digital SLR, consider these 6- to 8-megapixel models. They have the manual controls that provide you with a great deal of photographic control, yet can still work with point-and-shoot simplicity. All are much less expensive than an SLR. The Nikon Coolpix 8700 (74) has the longest zoom range in this group. The Canon PowerShot G6 (69) and Olympus C-7070 Wide Zoom (70) are closely matched in many respects; the Canon has a long flash range and better battery life. The Fujifilm FinePix E550 (64) and Olympus C-60 Zoom (67), CR Best Buys, are worth considering if you're on a limited budget and don't need a feature-laden camera. The Fujifilm has slightly lower image quality than others in this group, but that's not a serious drawback. The compact Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P150 (73) has PictBridge capability.

Ok I have a few questions that perhaps you can help me with. If you zoom, this takes away quality? Because it said that you should take the pic and then crop later (which I really hate doing because it's tedious!). Also what are the numbers before the different cameras? And what is SLR?

Oh yeah, and I could probably find this out quite easily...but. I hate hate hate about digital cameras that you never seem to have hard copies, so I want to ask for a photo printer for Christmas. Do most of the cameras connect via USB to the printer to print them or what? And how expensive are those things?

How is this possible?!

This is a mind boggling venture. I'm not sure I'm prepared.

the numbers before the cameras were their number on the site. they were links to the ratings of the particular model of the brand that they were talking about. but then they went on to tell you that anyways in the blurb.

digital zoom takes away quality. optical zoom does not most of the time (the exception being with focus issues...but that's only with superzoom, when you're getting up to 8x and higher). you shouldnt use digital zoom because it will diminish your picture quality/ability to enlarge the picture. so if you're looking at a camera, make sure you check out the optical zoom. digital zoom sounds impressive, but you get a better looking shot if you use your opitcal zoom and then crop it to whatever else you need.

SLR is single lens reflex. it means that you see through the viewfinder exactly what comes through the lens, so that you see the same image hitting the film or sensor. digital slr tend to be higher range cameras, because the settings are generally all manual, so they are more complex to operate if you don't know what you are doing.

another thing to be wary of is the megapixel hype. more does not equal better. you probably dont want less than 3, but more than 5 and you wont really be using the pixels. a 3 mp camera will take excellent regular sized photos, and pretty good 8x11s. so dont get fooled by people raving about having 6 or 8 mps...most of them never use em because it takes more storage space on a memory card that you dont need unless you're really planning on enlarging the heck outta shots. (my pet peeve at work is customers coming in wanting more megapixels on a camera than so-and-so has. it's penis envy for ignorant camera consumers)

also note that the consumers report is from last year...they havent updated their rankings.

and i suggest knowing what camera you want before you try and buy, or you'll have commission based salesmen trying to sell you a camera that will make you pie. call around and price compare. there was a $100 discrepancy between our price at zellers and futureshop's price on one of the fujifilm finepix cameras.

i think i'm blathering on, and i dont know if i'm helping. if you have any other questions, just ask. haha. i should apply for a job at a camera store.

yes, they connect via usb (most of them). i dont know offhand how expensive printers are...it varies depending on brand and quality. you're looking at spending a couple hundred dollars on one i think. (i know we have a canon one for $249.97 or something similar) i save my pics on cds and get em printed at wal-mart for 25cents/print.

Yeah you should. So helpful!

Don't worry, I'm not going in to ask for advice other than to ask specific questions and to look at the cameras for my own visual knoledge. I'm the cheapest person alive, nobody could sell me up! :P

it's because that camera's 2 years old. the model's been upgraded many times since then. in other words, it's discontinued.

Ok, I can see that. How horrible would that be though? I mean, technology comes by so freaking quickly that all you have to do is blink and it's out of date. Do you think I'd really be selling myself short if I got one that was older but still new?

make sure you ask to handle the camera before you buy it. nothing would be worse than buying one only to find out it's too big for your hands, buttons are awkwardly placed, etc.

my sister ran into that problem with her camera. she spent $450.00 only to find that it's a pain in the ass to use the manual settings.

and be wary of asking sales people questions. i knew more about my camera than the guy selling it to me. he tried to feed me some bs and i shut him down and showed him up in front of a group of customers. hahaha.
