i grew up with the notion of America being superior as well, which you realise at a certain part of your life as a Canadian as completely false.

Now i like to think of Canada as America PLUS, not America Jr.

Yeah, I always grew up thinking America was better. And ironically, alot of Americans have no respect for Canada[or Canadians], and neither does its government. Its pretty sad.

Then again, who does America have respect for these days..

I think since the "Axis Of Evil" came out, alot of people have lost respect for America. I wouldnt say myself as being Anti-American, because i know alot of great people who live in America, but against the government, yeah.

Its a commonality to be Anti-America where I live because we get alot of rude tourists. [But nice ones too.]

There were a couple of interesting things I read in my newspaper today (The Times).

The (UK) government's scientific advisor is warning that global warming is much worse than international terrorism. Just think about it ... last year 20,000 people died in Europe alone due to a heatwave let alone other deaths around the world. This year we've had major forest fires, floods and hurricanes leaving many more dead and injured. And yet while Bush is spending billions on his war on terrorism the US are refusing to sign up to the Kyoto agreement on reducing carbon dioxide emissions for the crazy reason that this would be an attack on "the american way of life".

Then there was an article on what the stars and stripes means to americans. Now I don't know how representative the sample of people shown is, but in amongst the understandable reactions about it standing for freedom and love for one's country were some more worrying things. I know almost all the Americans I know will not agree with much of what was said, but it scared me - these are the people that are going to vote for Bush again:

"Most of them Middle Eastern countries are jealous of us. God loves this country the most. Second is Israel. George W. is a born-again Christian who loves Jesus and Jesus loves him. God put him where he is and God allowed what happened in New York on 9/11 to wake us up."

"I always keep a weapon around - I figure if some terrorist is gonna hijack a truck, I'm gonna stab 'em in the neck first."

"If you ask me how I would handle terrorists, I'd nuke them. If you wanna save lives, you do one quick radical thing and it stops the whole damn thing."

"I try to give anybody the benefit of the doubt, like our people overseas, helpin' other countries. I believe in that." (I'm assuming he's referring to the soldiers in Iraq, but I could be wrong)

"Y'know, that's the best flag in the world because it's American. We are the only nation in the world that people are dying to come to."

That last guy really needs to get his facts straight. It's so scary that he should be that ignorant of what's going on in the rest of the world.
Open your eyes to nights and days, you close them up and float away
and somehow inbetween you've got to master lying to yourself
you back the cause, get out of school, you get a job, the job gets you
and somehow every day you end up serving somebody else
now if that ain't panic that you're feeling, then you damn well better start
you can drive it into that head of yours with the hammer in your heart.

And it's alriiiiiiiight now, take the world and make it yours again.

everyone thinks we get most of our fresh water from lakes and stuff, but the most abundant sources of fresh water come from wells.

Vietnam was a lost war, the Korean is currently a stalemate. British agression (ignorance?) started the war of 1812.

Saddam lies vs US lies. your making it seem like our lies are worse. they're both pretty bad.

almost all Manitoban communities are fed by the huge lakes that cover our province, and i'm pretty sure most other Provinces also get water from lakes and rivers, with exception of maybe Sask, and Alta

this isn't the book i used, but it's close enough. ground water is second only to glacier ice in terms of % of fresh water.

but you can live on well water just as much as you can live on lake water. San Antonio and the surrounding area gets it's water from the aquifer. it's all about what is around you. most cities that date back before plumbing are going to be around lakes and rivers because of their location by water.

I too have read that there are theories that the next war could be over fresh water. I personally don't buy it. Water is pretty much a renewable resource. Like Reno said, dig deep enough and you'll find water. There's just so much technology out there that it's really hard to believe we would ever really run out of usable water. Maybe I'm naive. I don't know.
I can't wait until the day schools are over-funded and the military is forced to hold bake sales to buy planes.

Sydney's water supply is at 40% now. Shrinking ever more. We're on stage 2 water restrictions. Bring on summer we're gonna be in trouble. Unless it rains a bunch between now and Xmas. If desalination was cheap enough, there would be no problems at all. (just be prepared for extra salty chips the next time you buy your fries at McDonalds)
