Been watching the Molson Park show. So unbelievable.
When they introduce Naveed, Raines asks "You guys know who naveed is? He's the guy up there." And then he points to the backdrop that has Sol Fox on it.
This is confusing

maybe he thinks of Sol as a bearer of good fortune?
"When looking up there, I just felt whole, like I belonged. Like one day I too would shine my most brilliant. Sitting there also made me think about sitting through services at my little country church back home. About that never-changing congregation of the same sixty-seven people and everyone has known you since before you were born. Now, out here in the real world, everything just seemed more vivid than when I used to sit in that little pew. That pew that was now so, so far away from where I was. I feared I had somehow left God behind there, too. I feared he was somehow just sitting there, saving my seat on the fifth pew from the front row, just waiting on me to come back. I left so quickly, I worried that he may not have noticed I was gone. And, now, I’m just too far away to find. So he’s just sitting there, patiently waiting on me to come back. I closed my eyes and prayed a moment. I hoped more than anything that he could still hear me." -an excerpt from my novella, A Sea of Fallen Leaves.
I've been wondering why they didn't have Sol on the cover of Gravity. Is it just so they could have the shot of the band, or was he unavailable? I don't know if this is common knowledge or not. I searched but couldn't find anything about it.
I read an interview, and they just tried to avoid the subject. Sol is NOT dead, they just didn't want to use him this time around, but didn't really say why.
And TECHNICALLY sol's not on the cover of SM (though he is in the pamphlet)

sol's on the cover of sm... look closely at the gernie (sp?)
and the whole reason he wasn't on gravity is because they wanted to redefine themseleves as a new band. they said that by putting themselves on the cover, they were getting back to the basics of rock and roll. just pure rock and roll.
this should actually answer all ur questions on the title, cover, and the sm cover...
raine on much on demand (june 25, 2002):
Jenn: WANT TO TALK ABOUT THIS ALBUM COVER HERE. THE FIRST TIME A PHOTO OF THE BAND IS ON THE COVER.
Raine: YOU KNOW WHAT? THE TITLE AND US BEING ON THE COVER, IT'S VERY MUCH THE ANTITHESIS, LIKE THE OPPOSITE OF "SPIRITUAL MACHINES." THAT RECORD WAS WAY OUT THERE, BASED LOOSELY ON THE BOOK. IT WAS TOUGH FOR ME TO GET THROUGH THE BOOK, BUT I THINK THIS IS JUST COMING BACK TO— IT'S VERY GROUNDED, JUST ABOUT FOUR GUYS MAKING A ROCK RECORD AND JUST HAVING—JUST IN THE WAY THAT BOB WAS ABLE TO SIMPLIFY OUR SOUND AND MAKE IT SOUND A LITTLE BIT MORE POWERFUL. IT JUST FEELS VERY REAL TO US. THAT'S WHY—I DON'T KNOW. IT FEELS LIKE THERE'S NOTHING TO HIDE, SO WE FIGURED WE WOULD PUT OUR FACES ON THE RECORD.
Jenn: I WANT TO KNOW WHAT SAUL HAS BEEN UP TO. HE WAS THE ACTOR ON THE COVERS OF YOUR FIRST THREE ALBUMS—
Jer: FOUR ACTUALLY. HE'S ON "SPIRITUAL MACHINES,"
Jenn: OH, IS HE HIDING ON THERE?
Jer: YEAH. HE'S RIGHT ON THE GURNEY.
Raine: HE'S ON THE GURNEY.
Jenn: OH.
Jer: YEAH, BUT HE'S GETTING OLDER NOW. IT'S A BIT MORE OF A DEAL TO BRING— HE'S PROBABLY IN HIS MID-80s.
Raine: PLUS THIS RECORD KIND OF SIGNIFIES LIKE A REBIRTH FOR THE BAND, SO IT WAS TIME TO CAN SAUL. (Chuckling)
Jer: WE DIDN'T CAN HIM! JEEZ!
Jenn: DID YOU SEND HIM A COPY OF THE ALBUM AT LEAST?
Jer: HELL, HE CAN HAVE WHATEVER HE WANTS WHENEVER HE WANTS. HE'S AN AMAZING INDIVIDUAL, THAT GUY. HE LEADS QUITE THE LIFE. HE'S GOT GREAT STORIES AND HE'S GOING DOWN IN HISTORY.

Yeah, that's basically it. They said that gravity was meant to be a more grounded record (hence the title) and simple, so the band photo seemed to fit, cause she asked them why they had Sol and the first three records but not this one (he corrected her in saying that sol was on the gernie)
Edit: crap, that whole thing was for nothing cause you just posted the actual quote!
