Unsatisfied with DVD
Rob, you are correct that I did bash everyone. For that, my apologies. Maybe it was a lack of sleep, or me typing before I really thought about it, probably both. I would also not call myself a super fan. The limit of my OLP memorabilia extends to their cd catalog, a poster, a t-shirt, and the dvd. Are they my most favoritest band of all time? No. Jimi Hendrix and his various musical progressions will always hold that spot. But I do like them an awful darn lot. But peoples musical tastes change with age, and I'm sure someday I will discover a band that I like even better :O But for now I will stick with the cunucks and the guy from the motor city. The spectrum of opinions on the dvd run from those who like it, those who are merely satisfied, to those who are disappointed, and finally those who will rip the audio and use the dvd for a coaster. Am I correct? And yes, in a seemingly hypocritical statement, it is OK for all of you to have differing opinions on the disc. I must remind myself that this is a forum where you should be able to express your opinions on the band and their productions, and none of us have a right to manipulate or demand that others hold the same opinions as we do. I hope I haven't lost anybody along the way here. If you are still reading please post your favorite character in your next post here. My reason that I wasn't disappointed with the dvd was this: All I expected was a full set of the live shows they played in the three cities. I knew there would be different audio and video sources. I also figured in on some tour footage and backstage stuff. Did I get what I expected? Yes. That was all that was promised on the little ad in the Live cd. The part where it says audio commentary and much more, I was indifferent on so I had no expectation for it. When my dvd arrived, it played fine in my pc and my set top, so I was very satisfied. For those who got skipping discs, didn't get features that they had hoped for, weren't aware of different media sources being used, then you have every right to be mad and voice your dissatisfaction on it. I contradict myself sometimes because I suddenly remember other people have opinions too. So, what does everyone like about the dvd? Nothing will be counted as an acceptable answer :-*

What it all comes down to is that OLP has the final say in everything they do.
Rob from Canada, you say the band is told they have control over what they write, but the record company has the final say in what gets released. You try to make it sound like OLP was forced into a room to make Gravity, and to make Sony out to be the bad guy, even though Sony let OLP release 4 amazing albums. The blame is solely on OLP on that.
And in all reality, OLP has the final say on most things. Sure, contractually, the label is to have say in what happens and everything, but OLP is the one that initiates everything. Do you think OLP was forced to re-release Gravity with an additional 4 live songs on it, causing thousands of fans to buy a shitty album they already had? Was OLP forced to choose Innocent as a single, and effectively release the worst song they're ever written? Did Sony tell them to write Innocent and release it, or do you think the band had some sort of say in who does what? If you honestly believe that, I'll get the stick and jar of vasoline to help you pry your head out of your ass.
Face it, OLP is in fault for everything they've done. I am not going to try and condone them for every steaming pile of shit they've unloaded in the past two years. Face it, they have the final say on everything they do, and it's no one else's fault for them releasing it and not my fault for not liking it, it's their fault for not putting any effort into releasing something worthwhile.
After the next album gets released, I am on Rob from NY's side on this. I guarantee that 70% of you super fans here will either be in denial and think that whatever it will be called is good, or you will become jaded to all that is OLP because of what they've been doing. You will soon have an epiphany and it will hit you, you'll finally open your eyes, and you'll see the sharp turn that the quality of music has taken and how much it just sucks to listen to them. And yeah, you're going to be like Rob and I.
So...when can we make this a non-OLP board?

I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging. But I heard my own breath and had to face that I'm still living. I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings. I'm not dead... My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant. There's no end.

OLP gets (comparatively) squat from sales of albums and DVDs. Sony gets that. They also entered into a contract with Sony, which probably states that although the band gets creative control, Sony gets the final say. Remember, they entered into this contract when Sony was the only company interested in them enough to come down to the recording studio and hear them play. They didn't have a lot of room to negotiate. Raine's often stated that he hopes bands don't make the same mistakes as OLP did in the start of their career (ie going straight to a big company and into the limelight).
You don't know what you're talking about.
OLP do quite well from their album sales. Between them and Celine they've propped up Sony Music Canada for the last 10 years. They are one of the more successful Canadian artists of late.
It might also interest you to note that OLP signed a record contract guaranteeing them creative control, that's why they were able to sit around for three years between releasing Naveed and Clumsy. Few bands ever get this elusive clause. So I think they negotiated quite well.
So trust, you can blame the band for this if it suits you. Sony is not the bad guy on this one.
True, they aren't video directors (Automatic Flowers notwithstanding) but it is ultimately THEIR ART. And as such, they take all the responsibility.
Your favourite band isn't perfect. But I'm sure they are happy to have you making excuses for them.
Now seriously, lets start a new thread...I'd love to wax on about Raine's hypocriticism of Canadian Content regs!
Holy crap people! This isn't religion, it's just music. Not THAT bid a deal, no matter how you slice it. The way I see it, there's two groups here. People that say OLP have creative control, and people that say that Sony controls everything. Well, no one has proved a thing, because everyone's doing just that, 'saying' that they do or don't. Until someone comes up with the actual contract, or has heard from one of the band members before, there's really no point in arguing about it. Remember, it's just music.

and its your $$$$ you spend to listen to the music and purchase the DVD with expectations. When you do something you expect a certain outcome and when you are let down you have a negative view. So those who worked 4 hours to purchase this DVD have every right to say what they want.

Dude, I'm pretty sure that OLP(or any band for that matter) gets a tiny portion of a CD sale. I would say no more that 3 dollars goes towards the artist. The only way that they would makes loads of money of of cd sales, is if they were mega popular and thats not going to happen.

That's true. Artists make a very small percentage off of cd sales and such. They make the majority of their money off of concerts... which is why some bands tour so much. Think about how much OLP tours. A lot. So, I'm gonna assume they don't get much off of cd sales.

That's what I meant by that.
I still don't see what's wrong with the DVD other than the production problems...

Exactly!!! Watch TLC's "Behind the Music".......they went freaking bankrupt after the making of their best freaking album!

I have a few things to say and add to discussion on this thread.
Frist off what is the difference between a progressive can dvd and non progresive scan. is there any real difference. I ask because I am getting a DVD player(finally this week) and want to know the difference.
2) To whoever said OLP SUPERFANS will like whatever they release cause they are in denial is total bull. I have been a huge fan and have no problem with what they have released over the years. Some of it I love, some of it I don't. I wouldn't say they suck now. I like all the records they released for different reasons. But for me I know that there will be an OLP CD I absolutely dislike. It is just law with me. Every band I am a huge fan of releases cd's I may not like or won't really listen to, but I won't say the band sucks because I don't like one piece of work they did.
You all know I am a huge U2 fan, but I absolutely dislike their POP CD. I think it is crap, but I don't go around saying U2 sucked because I thought one piece of work wasn't up to par in my opinion. It is unfair to criticize people for diliking or liking a piece of music. I don't have a problem with people who dislike Gravity or the directin OLP are going. What I don't like is the constant bashing on one another. YOu like Gravity, you don't like it. Doesn't matter. I still love OLP and continue to support them through good and bad. When I feel they are releasing something I don't like, I just won't listen to it anymore. I don't like everything OLP releases. People who know me personally know there are songs I absoultely hate that OLP do and thank god everytime they are dropped from the set. That doesn't mean I get on people who may like the songs.
3rd) I can tell you that OLP aren't rolling in DOUGH as some think. I can't really go into detail, but I know for a fact they don't have as much as people think. Tha tis the main reason they tour. That is where the money lies.

pfft. we don't think they are rich.
Hell, if Steve only has like 4 shirts, doesn't that prove the point?
I have to say, that other then the birdman skipping thing (that was on my DVD
) I love having the DVD. I am very happy with it actually. I thought it was great. All that home video stuff made it seem very personal and not like it was made for media.

I don't know squat about how much money any band makes off cd's and dvd's, but I do know that touring is where the money is. Jimi Hendrix made bazillions of dollars by touring all over the US and Europe, but made little off his albums (the albums were never gigantic successes in terms of sales). Touring is where the cash is.
I guess.

Yeah, all this talk about the source of OLP's revenue is great. Wonderful analysis happening here folks.
Not to sound too cynical, but it really doesn't make a lick of difference where OLP make the bulk of their coin or even how much coin they make.
The bottom line is, any fault you have with CD's, DVD's or any product that represents their artistic output, can always be laid at the feet of the artist.
The buck stops with OLP.
It's that very culpability that seperates OLP from all of the pre-manufactured pop-formula crapola you all show so much disdain for.
