Unsatisfied with DVD

Right, well after all the fuss and bother about Gravity and having caught OLP live in Belgium last year, I was ready to give them another chance. I got a copy of the DVD from work only to be disappointed.

While the footage itself looks great in parts, OLP looks really small time when they zoom out and you see their stage setup. Also, the jumpy pace of the cameras is difficult to keep up for the 90 minutes or so. OLP might have been better to play a show in the round without a backdrop and up the lighting budget a tad. It would have made for better video at least. But aside from those minor quibbles, the images were stunning in parts and I was very satisfied with this aspect.

The sound was also well put together. Although you can tell it has been overdubbed and edited a number of times.

But as a package, the two components: sound and video are jumpy, inconsistent and poorly pieced together. The video is horribly edited in spots, with the video at times completely out of sync with the music, Unless OLP were going for the musical equivalent to the 70's kung-fu overdub aesthetic, this really seems like a terrible editing job.

But I am mostly disappointed in how this DVD was put together. The DVD looks like an afterthought to the whole process. It seems like alot of effort was put into filming the show, mixing the sound, but minimal effort (and perhaps budgeting) were put into packaging the whole thing up. As I've mentioned, the editing seems really poor but also the authoring is out of wack. The DVD is being recalled because of one such flaw.

Unfortunate as that may be, these technical flaws aren't the only thing pushing me to put my copy up for sale on Amazon. The menus are shit*y for one. On each menu face we've got this unprocessed home video footage that looks like it was pulled out of someone's camcorder. Far from adding a "rough gritty" quality to the DVD, it looks lazy and unprofessional. Then we have the "Special Features" which mostly consist of information we already know (Discography, who's in the band, etc.) but also a lame picture slideshow, and an interview and a making of the DVD special that consist of footage they bought the rights to from Much. It just seems like all of that stuff was a major afterthought.

And all of this is to say nothing of the lame-ass Sony marketing ploy to package a live CD 7 months before.

All in all, a really disappointing effort in the production of the DVD itself prevented the success of a project that showed alot of promise. I would have rather just had a package of all their videos on a DVD with some goodies from the Mike era as a "Goodbye to the old OLP."

This DVD could be a lot better.

Sorry to add another negative thread, but this is the first of OLP's products where I have been disappointed with the effort and artistic attention to detail. True, they aren't video experts but there are a load of other bands who've gotten this DVD thing right.

egotist is right....this DVD seems like it wasnt thought out at all and minimal effort was put in just like the LIVE CD. Just a ploy to gain more money from fans. I mean there is no reason why they couldnt package the two together...is it that hard to rip sound from the videos and slap it on a seperate cd and sell them both for $20 instead of $20 each. It just makes me wonder who is calling the shots because if it is the band and they approve of this they are taking advantage of people big time.

I'll admit I was a little disapointed with the dvd too, Untill I realised that the default sound seating isn't the dobly digital surround sound.

Once I changed that wow did it make a difference. The sound is soo much more clear and you can hear the Raine's voice echo in the arena as he sings.

So make sure you check the sound settings before you watch the video. And if it's at all possible play it with a speaker system something that has a subwoofer (I just used my computer). You'll notice a deffinate difference.

The dvd is at the top of my christmas list.

I really think that the DVD was ment to be released earlier. Which explanes the 5 month time difference. If they were made to go together they were likely ment to be released together. And sometimes there are things you just can't avoid.

If thats the case, he signed mine too but since there's only four sigs and it starts with an R I assumed it was a bad forgery of Raine's...

Nam's kidding, it *is* supposed to be Raine's. You guys have to learn, Nam's not serious 99.999999% of the time. :lol:

Oh yeah, and after much studying, I've decided it is Raine's... but it's his really REALLY lazy sig... look at the R, that's definitely Raine's R. :nod:

Actually, I kinda liked the camcorder stuff on the menus... i thought it was kinda cool, maybe it's just me, i dunno...

ohh...

You really think it's Raine's? I thought his A was usually at least distinguishable... on this it's like non-existant. Mine's not exactly the same as Nam's though.. the R is a bit different..
