Why is everyone so negative about OLP lately?
there was a clip of it on the christmas greeting.....

"How can we justify spending so much on destruction and so little on life?" Matthew Good
"The white dove is gone, the one world has come down hard, so why not share the pain of our problems, when all around are wrong ways, when all around is hurt, i'll roll up in an odd shape and wait, untill the tide has turned.....with anger, i'm dead weight, i'm anchored"- IME, God Rocket (Into the Heart of Las Vegas) ^ Some say this song is about a terrorists thoughts before 911
"Pray for the sheep" Matt Good
"But it's alright, take the world and make it yours again" Matt Good
I felt it in the wind, and i saw it in the sky, i thought it was the end, i thought it was the 4th of July.
"Hold on, hold on children, your mother and father are leaving, hold on, hold on children your best freind's parents are leaving, leaving,.......*AHHH*! " - Death From Above - Black History Month

no no apparently we aren't allowed to criticize the band. its like being a heretic or something.
all hail OLP and every single song they make
jesus fucking christ.. there are bands far better than OLP that have made shitty albums too. you people need to maybe realize theres OTHER music too. and that they (OLP) are going to make some shitty music (ie gravity). the question now is will they bounce back from that crappy album and make a good one or will they continue to go downhill? id rather see the former happen than the latter. but you know, thats just me talking, being a fan since 93-94, but you know what do i know about OLP, ive only watched them grow from birth like a child almost.

So that makes your word better than everyone elses.
Some of us actually do like Gravity as an album, you know. I couldn't care less if it was OLP or not, I like it.
Anyway, just for reference, I've only ever seen OLP play from August of last year to August of this year... so in the span of a year, I saw them play the following songs:
4am (sometimes with crowd singing, sometimes Raine sang it)
A Story About A Girl
All For You
Are You Sad?
Bring Back The Sun
Clumsy
Do You Like It?
Drive
In Repair
Innocent
Is Anybody Home? (sometimes with intro)
Naveed (Life interlude sometimes)
Neon Crossing
Not Enough
One Man Army
Our Time Is Fading
Right Behind You (Mafia)
Somewhere Out There
Starseed (once with the U2 intro, several with the Gravity-era intro, once or twice with no intro)
Superman's Dead (changed a bit once)
The Birdman (different solos and such)
The Wonderful Future
Thief
Walking In Circles (added a verse second time)
Whatever
Wipe That Smile Off Your Face
That's 26 songs. Only half of those are singles (I counted 13... forgive me if I counted wrong... not being in Canada, I get confused about what's a single and what's not). OLP only has about 60 songs that have been released on albums and stuff. So, that's about half (ok, a little less, but not much) of thier catalogue in songs that I've seen. In the span of about a year. Not to mention that most of the songs were changed at least partially if I saw them multiple times. I don't consider that bad. But, that's just me.

I hope this is goodbye wrote:OK, Gail, let's drop it, there's no point in fighting. I'll never meet, you, and this is text, it's stupid.
AnnieDreams, who are you? I didn't say OLP doesn't care about their fans. I said they don't care as much as other bands that are just as popular as they are. I'll keep saying this over and over again, I don't go to concerts just to hear singles. It's not like I am asking for much, I am asking for variety. Other bands that play venues of the same size as OLP, or larger, are able to play requests and different shows nearly everynight. Why can't OLP do it? Just because they've released 3-5 songs off each album doesn't mean that is all I want to hear at their lives shows. I want something more. Besides the Gravity songs, the last tour they went on, the only non-singles I heard were Are You Sad and Neon Crossing. Six shows, and two non-single songs. If they only want to play two songs that aren't singles per show, more power to them, at least rotate different songs in there. They have quite a bit of non-single songs that they could occasionally throw in the set once in a while, I wouldn't mind hearing them for once. I've said this 10 times before, yet I keep having to say this over and over again. Get the hint, I want variety.
At least I got one show of songs I never thought I would hear. I miss hearing If You Believe, Car Crash, and Middle Of Yesterday. That was a fucking spectacular show. It's sad to think that my first OLP show will be my best one, but whatever. Apparently I am not allowed to want variety in their setlist.
I am just curious. Besides Alkerline Trio, What bands are you talking about that take request cause oviously I am seeing the wrong acts. I never heard of that? This is not directed as mean. I am just curious cause I never heard of that and I seen alot of people. I have said that most acts stick to a set and change a few songs here and there, but basically it is the same. From HUGE INTERNATIONAL ACTS to SMALL VENUE ACTS. Damn, I have friends who I see play-they play the same stuff. Should I be pissed at them for playing the same stuff.
As for non-singles, you have to remember you saw OLP the SM tour so they concentrated on mostly SM stuff. With this tour it was mostly Gravity stuff. You say you don't want to see Singles, well if OLP's cd's are only about 10-11 songs and 5 go out as singles then half the cd's are singles. Which would be half there catalog. WE KNOW YOU WANT VARIETY, but the band does what songs work well with audiences. There are some songs I saw on the Happiness tour that I think are great live, but they didn't go over well with the audiences so they don't do them. There are alotof songs I love to see again, but the band isn't going to do them. The more records they release, the more current stuff they will do. Same with alotof acts. I jsut saw a concert where the band did at least one song off all their cd's except one. They didn't even do any singles released from it. SO how is OLP any different.
Like I said what are the bands you speak of cause the bands I see do pretty much the same thing.
YOu have to remember that not every diehard fan goes on the message boards. Does that make them less of a fan. I remember people turing their noses down at me cause I wasn't on the CC( this was back in early 2000) never mind I didn't have access to the internet, was in the Fan CLub and saw the band for years. SInce I wasn't on the Message boards I wasn't considered a TRUE FAN. Just as there are a bunch of you who dislike OLP's new stuff, direction what ever-There are alot who do like the new direction> i know alot of Die Hard OLP fans who don't post
Not everone one here makes up the majority of OLP's fans. It is only a small %. Unless ther eis an actually survey we don't know how the majority of fans feel.
BTW, where was it written that DETROIT is OLP's number 1 USA supporting City in the USA? Just curious.
You tell us to TO GET THE HINT .I WANT VARIETY We can say GET THE HINT BACK. Unless you are willing to see OLP the way they are now, you will never be happy.
that is not meant as an argument, but you seem so unhappy with OLP now. All I can say to that is don't go to the shows anymore. Especially if they don't do enough variety for you. People post aboutthe shows so you cna see what is done live. I still love seeing the band perform. i don't care what they play. I still enjoy the shows. Plus I have my memories of past shows.
I feel love, I feel a power. It comes to me in the darkest hour. And I want to feel it again

Well first of Gail, I would like to thank you for being a 30-something and keeping this fight alive. Way to act your age. I clearly asked for it to stop on the last page, but here I am, having to respond to some of the dumbest shit you could possibly say.
Well, there's Alkaline Trio that take requests, who are now playing the same venue that OLP plays here in Detroit, which holds 3000 people. They will take requests from fans. They played '97 for me, and they asked Jeff for a request. You could ask him, but he's been effectively chased away from the board. And so what if these bands that take requests are indie? At least they give a damn enough to play what the fans want to hear. I'm sorry if The Get Up Kids, Koufax, The New Amsterdams, Mustard Plug, and other bands of the sort aren't good enough in your opinion to truly give a shit about the fans. They are able to sell out good sized venues with absolutely no radio play, no videos on MTV, and no major label support. Last time I checked, being able to get 300 people in a show with nothing but word of mouth is damn good, not to mention The Get Up Kids that can sell out a place that holds 1500 people. How about Reel Big Fish? They sold out a building of 1500 people and still asked the crowd what they wanted to hear. And there's Catch-22, a band that sold out a 1,250 person venue, and they don't even have a setlist. They ask the crowd what songs they want to hear, and they play it. The fact of the matter is, OLP usually plays two or three non-singles per show, they can fucking rotate the songs.
What the hell does it matter if hardcore fans aren't on the messageboard? Are you trying to prove a point there? If you are, I'm missing it. Good for them, they don't type about OLP. I am sure they have better lives. If you want to bring something up, make sure there's a point there, and maybe you wouldn't look like a complete moron when you post.
OK, way to bring back something I said pages ago, I am sure you're proud. Let's see why I think OLP finds Detroit to be their favorite American city. They had the in-store performance here the day Gravity came out. They play here numerous times a year. They probably draw their largest crowd when playing Detroit by bringing in 3000 people a show here. They have an insane amount of radio support here in Detroit, mainly because we're right by Canada. But whatever, I suppose I can ignore what is obvious and just pretend that they don't like the city of Detroit.
I'll go see their shows and sit through the same songs over and over again. Wow, does that make me as big of a fan as you are? I am sorry if I voice the general opinion that people might want to hear something else that isn't a single. I am not asking for them to revamp their entire setlist, I am asking for OLP to maybe change their non-single songs around once in a while. I love Are You Sad, but if they have to get rid of that song to bring a new non-single in, fuck it, it's gone. I could go a show or two without hearing Whatever. But I forgot, I am supposed to be happy with OLP playing the same shit repeatedly. Excuse me while I go follow blindly.
By the way Gail, you should invest in a new keyboard so you can learn how to use the question mark. I am assuming it's broken because you ask me questions and follow with a period.
Oh yeah, and there's this. If not for OLP riding the coat tails of Avril fucking Lavigne, they'd have played smaller venues in Europe than Alakline Trio does. See, Alkaline Trio has a #1 hit over there, which is one more than OLP has. I'll be damned. It looks like Alkaline Trio is a bigger international hit than OLP is, doesn't it?

I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging. But I heard my own breath and had to face that I'm still living. I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings. I'm not dead... My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant. There's no end.

I wasn't arguing with you. I only asked what groups cause I personally never saw it. Maybe I wanted to check out these bands when they come through here. I am always on the look out for newer music( new music to me that I might not of heard of before). You are the one who turned it into an argument. I only asked you a simple question. Excuse me for trying to expand my musical taste further then they are. You need to calm down. You have so much anger in you. A person can't even talk to you. STOP PUTTING WORDS IN MY MOUTH> I never said bands weren't good enough for me. I hate to tell you but I listen to alot of different types of music. you be surprised.
I didn't say Detroit didn't support OLP. I only asked why do you think that Detroit is their number 1 supporter without some kind of survey or written proof to that fact. There are lots of cities that support OLP.
I was refereing back to a different post someone said about being hard core cause they posted on the messge boards. It wasn't really directed at you, but at the person who said anyone who doesn't post couldn't possibly be hard core.
I never sad anyone was lesser afan then I am. As far as I am concern anyone who supports OLP are big fans. It is you that feels that way not me.
Also I did not appreciate being called a STALKER cause I have the ability to see OLP in different places. If I am stalker then so are all of you. Alot of you see the band and meet them Once again I sense so much anger in you for something very stupid when there are bigger problems in the world.
BTW, who cares how big OLP are? On one hand this board seems to complain they are too big, then says they aren't big enough.
I don't like OLP cause they sell records, not sell records. I like them cause I enjoy the music. I enjoy the live shows. Simple as that.
BTW, the few dozen on here who dislike OLP now does not make up the majority of OLP fans.
that is I will say.
now you will go and say I need to be right or what have you and saying I am arguing with you. I am trying to talk to you and find out why you feel the way you do. YOu are the one who is making it a big fight. Like I said you need to calm down. you will live longer. Life is too short to get angry over things that in the long run don't make a difference in our lives.

OK, your last post (before the one I am responding to right now) came off as you being condescending and ill-spirited. Usually when people type in caps, that's the way someone yells online. Sorry that I took it that way. I also apologize for calling you a stalker. You're lucky you can go see OLP damn near anywhere, and frankly, I probably speak for everyone here when I say we're a bit jealous.
I don't care if OLP or any other band gets big. Bands deserve recognition after playing nearly everynight for a few years. The thing is though, on the last page when I was talking about the bands I really am into, you said they're able to play requests because they aren't as big. I was just saying that my favorite band is now on their level, and are still able to play what the crowd shouts out, even though they have as many songs released as OLP does, if not, more. I just found out yesterday that Alkaline Trio is now playing the same place that OLP plays and will most likely sell the State Theater out. I brought up the fact that Alkaline Trio has a #1 hit in England because you said that OLP is an international hit, and Alkaline Trio is one too, and most likely, a larger one than OLP (as long as you exclude Canada.)
I am assuming that you've been to a show in Detroit for OLP. You've seen how the crowd gets at their shows and how into the show the band is. I've seen them here, in Ohio, and in New York, and it seems like OLP puts the most effort into playing an amazing show here in Detroit. I only go by what I see.
Sorry about the messageboard mix up. You kind of integrated it between things you were saying to me, and quite frankly, it was confusing.
I will say this one last time. I do not dislike OLP. I like them, and their music. The thing is, I also like variety in their shows too. Maybe you're fine with hearing the same songs everytime you go out to see OLP, and that's fine, but I figure OLP can at least rotate a few songs. Giving a crowd some different songs every once in a while won't kill anyone. I am sure people would be disappointed if One Man Army, Are You Sad, or Whatever got taken out of the setlist, but if they rotate in something like The Wonderful Future or Car Crash, I am pretty sure the crowd wouldn't complain too much.
I have one question for you Gail. You said OLP doesn't want to play Blister anymore. Why is that? It's kind of disappointing, because hey, lots of people want to hear it. if you can fill me in on why the band has dropped it from consideration, I would appreciate it. Thanks.
I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging. But I heard my own breath and had to face that I'm still living. I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings. I'm not dead... My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant. There's no end.
wow you don't check the boards for a couple days...
anyways, I think there's a difference between disliking the band and disliking one album. In my opinion Gravity is a poor album in comparison with their other work. That's the only reason I dislike the album. I feel that their live shows have improved but the lack of variety is sometimes difficult to handle when you're paying so much and driving all over to see them.
I hope the bickering between you guys stops. You both provide the CM with various tidbits, and it's a shame we can't get along a lil better. I think we should appreciate Gail's passing along of info from the band especially when they've gradually cut themselves off from their online fans, (i.e. Cracks in the Pavement or CC posts...) At least she's giving us some answers to our questions. As for Alan, I think it's really easy for all of us to understand where he's coming from in some form or another. It can be difficult to ask questions, but never get answers about why things are happening with the band. Of course we all don't expect them to be avid users of the CM... That's why Gail's been a great help to the CM... at least when you two bicker we find out some information.

I can't wait until the day schools are over-funded and the military is forced to hold bake sales to buy planes.

*sigh* I love it when my posts get ignored.
Oh yeah, and might I add that at least one of the songs on that list was a request (more may have been, but I didn't actually get to hear anyone request them).

And out of the songs you listed, I've heard 21 of them in 6 shows last summer. After the sixth show, I got burned out of OLP and just stopped caring about their live shows. If they had some variety, then fuck, I would be all giddy to see them, but they didn't, so I just came to the conclusion that this is the best I'll ever get, so yeah. That was the end of it.
And I love how they added The Wonderful Future to their setlist when there was like a seven month gap between shows in Michigan, and when they come back, it's replaced by decent-at-best new songs. Well, as long as they can still keep cramming All For You and Do You Like It? down our throats, I should be happy. Meh. I want The Wonderful Future, and odds are, they won't play it anymore.

Alan... I'm sure they didn't not (yes, that's a double negative on purpose
) play TWF or another "special" song in the Detroit area on purpose... you just got unlucky, I suppose. There's no way they can remember what songs they play in a certain city when they get back there for another show... and I can't exactly imagine them hitting up olp.cc every time they play a show, just so they can make the setlist different.
Anyway, I've been quite happy with the variety of setlists that I've seen. Sure, the majority of songs stay the same, but they do switch it up enough to make it interesting... in my opinion, anyway. Like Gail, I'm used to bands playing pretty much the same set for a full tour or whatever... so I guess I'm biased about that kind of stuff. Just as you are, because all the bands you go to see switch up their setlists every show they play.

nikki, i never said in my post my word was better than anyones. i was just pointing out what i see through my eyes of being a 10 year fan.
think about it like this
who do you think a person is going to listen to more? the person who's been studying a subject for a long while , say 5 years, and is very knowledgable about it, or someone who just happened to stumble upon the same subject and read an article about it? you don't hire a lawyer to fix your car do you?
btw, change your damn avatar already, its giving me fuckin nightmares

You know, at first I thought you were gonna have a civil conversation with me. Your insults mean nothing to me, just so ya know. Nice sig.
Anyway, I'm sure they don't keep copies of their setlists. Why would they? Do you have any idea how many setlists they've had over their career? Not only would that be a waste of space (because they're handwritten a lot of times, and therefore not on a computer), not to mention there's no reason to hold on to them.
And, a specific band's music isn't something that a person needs to be a long time fan of to understand.
I don't know why I'm even replying to you. It's not like you listen to anything anyone ever has to say anyway. Maybe someday you'll realize that the world doesn't revolve around you. Though, that's a pretty big "maybe".
