Why is everyone so negative about OLP lately?
It seems to me that a lot of people on here seem to be saying a lot of negative things about OLP and their music since gravity came out, and especially now with the new music coming out.
What is everyone's problem????
I can honestly say I love every OLP song on every album and even the demos and b-sides too. Maybe its cause I am a little obsessed with their music, but I can't see how all the people on here who loved them before seem to "hate" them now with the new music.
Every album they make is a lot different than any one they have made before. The new one is in the same boat. I guess most of you want their music to stay with the hardcore fans and not even play on the radio, so that only the hardcore fans can hear it.....NEWS FLASH....no one would have heard of them if they didnt get played on the radio, and they would not be making their 6th album if they were not making any money by getting their songs out there.....Commercial success does not make a band bad.....if that were the case, the Rolling Stones must really suck then..................
sorry for the long rant but i guess it bugs me that some of the hardcore fans seem to be disliking the band lately
(this is just my opinion, and everyone is entitled to their own)

Don't want to be down here feeding my narcissism. I must crucify the ego before it's far too late. I pray the light lifts me out before I pine away.

first off, Gravity was an all-out disappointment. There were some good moments on the cd but it really just seemed like an average run of the mill album that could have been put out by anyone.
I'm going to use an addage that's often used in sport: "you're only as good as your last game". This applies to music as well. You're only as good as the last album you put out.
Personally I've found their live performances to be going south as well. The energy is there but you have to wonder sometimes if they're just faking it. My best example is with Raine. He does the same thing at the same time at every show. Some variance or something spontaneous wouldn't hurt. Their live shows just seem very fabricated now. At a show in November in Buffalo I was able to list out the setlist and any interesting things Raine does during various songs while I was in line for the show with my girlfriend. She laughed at me and said I should have some hope, but afterwards she was laughing because I was right.
That's when I started to get negative about the band. Actually in the month and a half after that concert I didn't listen to OLP or post on here because I just couldn't believe how they've really changed.
Not saying change is necessarily a bad thing, but in this case I believe it is.

DISAGREE.
i know OLP have really sucked lately, but since i KNOW they are capable of things like Happiness ... and Spiritual Machines there's NO WAY i can ever say they overall suck, just because Gravity sucked. c'mon dude.

a) no one ever said they overall sucked
b) no one complained about them being on the radio
c) the new songs are absolutley horrible no matter what way you look at it..it just is not what we liked about the first four albums
d) they cashed out on a live cd but included mostly gravity songs
e) live shows....i saw them 8 times last year so i consider myself a pretty hardcore fan but i would not see them more then once on the next tour. Go see any band who hasnt exactly made it yet and look at their energy. Standing in one place playing the same solos or performing the same movements while singing wont get you anywhere. You need energy you need to make it seem like you enjoy playing the music and OLP just doesnt do that. I have seen many bands since OLP and the energy they give blows OLP away and they dont have giant lights to help improve their show.
f) the first four OLP cds will always be important in my life but just the state of the band right now i dont listen to those cds as much. Every now and then I listen to them but it just isnt the same.
g) sometimes you just have enough a band who lets you down time after time and sometimes you grow out of music.

if any of that was towards my post, i think you mistook it.
if it wasn't, let's move on. to add to your post, rob:
i can honestly say i haven't sat down and listened to an OLP cd for MONTHS and I don't know if it'll ever be like that again, but i can say without a doubt that OLP will always be with me, because they were basically my childhood. i grew up with OLP so there's no way i can ever dislike them, even if their current stuff is absolutely shitty.

I'm not negative .. olp is the one thing I'm not negative about .. I've been to 6 shows and still become incredibly excited when they come on .. I don't care that I've seen the same Steve solo 6 times, I'll watch it another 6 times and still get a kick out of it .. Gravity wasn't a disappointment to me .. people are just bitter .. and aren't adapting to the fact that olp has changed ..
I embrace change

I saw OLP 5 times last year over a period of 4 months, and at only one show did they add anything different to the show. It's just boring. It's pathetic when you know exactly what will happen at any moment. Except for one show where they surprised the crowd with a poor sounding In Repair and Automatic Flowers, both lacking falsetto. One show out of five in the four month span had some variety. That is sad.
Look at nearly any other band. With the exclusion of some songs, they will play completely different sets. Hell, some bands actually care about what the fans want and take requests. I've asked Raine before, during, and after shows to play Blister, and they haven't played it once since the tour they named after the fucking song. Yes, that seems stupid and all, but give me a break. The fans pay money to hear and see you play, so why don't you give something back and make something random and unexpected? I mean, shock the crowd by throwing out Blister, Carnival, or Dirty Walls. Do something to pay back the older fans. We were there for you when you were absolutely nothing, and now we're pissed because you sold yourself short on the last cd and the new songs.
Go to a show of theirs and you will have an idea of what they're gonna go. Steve will play the new solo to Starseed we've all heard now. Raine will climb something during One Man Army. Raine will grab Steve during Birdman. Duncan will smile the entire show. Jeremy will look completely uninterested in what's going on with the show.
The new music sucks. It honestly sounds like Raine got drunk and wrote some shit down on a piece of paper, and decided to make it into a song. It sucks. Nothing excites me. I hear it and I feel like I am listening to another band. It's run of the mill rock music now. Nothing interests me. I listen to it because it has the OLP name on it. I don't listen to it because I feel it's good. If you put another band's name on it, I would laugh at it.
In other words, OLP can do so much more. They used to be talented and unique, now they're like everything else out there. I don't tell people I am an OLP fan with pride anymore. I tell them if they ask me.
By the way, I just remembered this. After hearing the lack of creativity in Jeremy's drum work, we actually tried to play it off as something good. We used to say stuff like, "well Jeremy is a more complete drummer because he can use simple beats throughout an entire song." We were so shocked by Gravity sucking so much we tried to play off garbage as talent. We shouldn't have to do that. We should be able to rave about how great the music is, not how great it is that they can still play simple rhythms. Sad.

I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging. But I heard my own breath and had to face that I'm still living. I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings. I'm not dead... My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant. There's no end.

That's how I feel. Although I don't listen to them as much as I use to and I'm not loving the new stuff, I could never hate them cause I grew up with them. Those 4 albums mean too much to me for me to just give up on them.

we are the brand new beatniks. we are the down and outers.
we are the bleeding hearts, beating syncopated, broken rhythm.
our speed is often break neck. we need to slow it down.
tired of being sleepless. tired of being broken.
