Why is everyone so negative about OLP lately?

Ya know, that's odd, because I've been to a few OLP shows where they didn't play The Birdman. Just because Raine grabs Steve doesn't mean it will stay in the set.

If they want to play only singles, as it appears, at least rotate them. Thief, Carnival, In Repair, and Hope would be nice replacements for The Birdman, Right Behind You, and Innocent. A little variety isn't asking much. It's asking to not make their shows so predictable. I know that unless OLP opens their next tour in Detroit, I could list off 19 songs, in order, and be right on each and every one of them.

Like I said, the indie bands that I listen to play the same sized venues that OLP does but still are able to surprise the crowd with some songs. When I saw Alkaline Trio I never expected them to play Snake Oil Tankers or Sundials, but they did. They haven't played Sundials on tour since, and I am not Sure about Snake Oil Tankers. Sure, they have 10 more songs than OLP, but when you go out to see them play, you don't know what they're going to play. They're able to keep you guessing. That is what I want in a show.
I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging. But I heard my own breath and had to face that I'm still living. I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings. I'm not dead... My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant. There's no end.

I saw Life on TV today. I just about orgasmed at the awesomeness of it, and it's probably my least favourite song from the "fab 4" albums. Damn, I miss Emtee and the "old OLP".

Then I came downstairs and listened to WTSOYF and WiC. And you know what? I liked them. I really do. I don't have the same "orgasmic" love for them as with the "fab 4", but I still like them.

Stop comparing OLP to indie bands. It's not the same situation. They might have just as many fans, but, you know how many Alkaline Trio songs I (and most of the population who aren't fans) know? Zero. Not a one. So, they don't have to play a bunch of singles that people would know.

Meanwhile, OLP wants to please the crowd, so they play songs that they think the majority of the audience will know, and they play songs from the newest album, just like most other bands do. I know when I mention OLP, most people know at least one song. And, if they know more, they have a favorite, and it's always a single.

Do you know how pissed off a crowd would be if they left an OLP show and they didn't play, say, Clumsy or SD or SOT or Innocent? Quite. Sure, the hardcore fans in the audience might leave the show saying it was the best thing they've ever seen, but those few people don't make up enough of the crowd.

I hope that all made sense.

what , just because someone knows one OLP song makes them able to dictate the shows? thats crap. a band should be able to play ANY song from their catalog. not just the singles. just because OLP isn't an indie band and maybe a few more people know of them than say, Alk3, doesn't make them any different than any other band. and yea, bands do play most new songs for their album tour. but this tour ISNT the gravity tour. that was last year. and you know what.... Innocent is one of the WORST songs ive ever heard. its fucking annoying.

They don't dictate the shows. OLP does.

I don't like Innocent either, but OLP still plays it because it was a single off of their most recent album that was popular enough that everyone in the audience can identify it as one of OLP's. Then they can go out and buy some of the albums if they like what they hear.

Or they might have heard Innocent on the radio and somehow loved it. Then maybe they downloaded a few songs. Then found out that OLP were playing in the area. So they go to the show, and love what they hear. So they go out and buy all the albums and become a hardcore fan like us.

I think the main reason is that they're trying to give an overall history of the band's career. As the band is around longer, they'll have more singles that they play as kind of "classics". The longer they're around, the less non-singles will be played.

However, we're lucky that they at least bring in some non-singles to their set. Hopefully they'll start changing up which non-singles they play, though.
