Why is everyone so negative about OLP lately?
the problem is, they would notice if the fans were to start not buying the cds and going to shows, but there's too many of the little 15 yr old girls who scream for raine that buy cds and go to shows
do you have any idea how annoying that is?

They don't make music for us. They make it for themselves. They make the kind of music they want to. The kind that pleases them. To me, that's what it seems like they're doing, and I applaud them for it. They're making music that makes them feel good. They're not hear to appease or thank us. Whether we've been a 'fan' and supported them for however long. To me just the fact that they're still making music is thanks enough. They're the ones making the music, they'll do what they want. It seems a lot of people don't like the kind of music they're making now. Good for you. It really doesn't matter. Move on. Stop comparing and move on.
As for not changing their set list every night. I don't think they expect a fan to come to more than one concert per tour, so they wouldn't make the setlist for the one or two that do. They make it for the general population. I mean, they go all across North America, I really don't think they expect to see the same fan at more than one or two shows per tour.

First off Evan, you don't know many people on this board. Oodles of people here travel across North America to see OLP play, and they get treated with the same songs over and over again. You should talk to Gail sometime, now she's been to more shows than I can count.
Next, if OLP is making music only for themselves, then they should get out of their contract with Columbia and just play music in the garage of one of their huge houses. Yep. If they don't want to make their fans happy by releasing good music, more power to them, people will stop listening to their music and buying their shit.
If we're not allowed to compare their new stuff to their old stuff, then why should they have released music in the first place? It's always going to be out there, and it's always going to be 400x better than Gravity. You can't get around that.
They should be somewhat grateful for us. Without us fans, they would have real jobs just like us. But our money going to pay for their music and concerts supports their lifestyle, and yet we should be thanking them for putting out sub-par music? No thanks. I'd rather be unhappy with Gravity and hope for the better than just say, "Oh well, Gravity was decent at best, but I should be happy I spent my money on it because they used to put out great music!" No.
By the way, if you can't handle some people not liking the direction OLP has taken, then don't come in this thread and say we're horrible fans for having an opinion that isn't so positive. I mean, look at the title of this thread, it's made for negative comments. Deal with it.

That is a question directed to people. People that aren't happy with the new music are expected to respond and say why they feel the way they do. If no one did respond to why they aren't happy with the crap that's out now, then this thread would be pointless. We didn't turn the thread around, we answered the question the thread proposed.

I may have a skewed point of view but all I see is evolution.
I mean every album of theirs is different! it doesnt mean that they get progressivly crappier, it means they change. You can't expect a band to play the same thing for 10 years. If you have hears newer songs like not afraid, our time is fading, or even walking in circles, it is different then what you heard in gravity.
And what if they did stick to a heavier sound that is from clumsy or naveed? people would complain that all of their songs sound alike.
If you don't like an album thats fine. It doesnt mean that you arn't a fan or any bull like that. It just means you arn't into that particular sound. But I do think you have to maintain a certain respect for these people. Just because you don't feel the same way at this point in time doesn't change what they have done.

Well, here's what I've felt about OLP's music.
Naveed - Damn good
Clumsy - Great
Happiness... - Absolutely amazing
Spiritual Machines - Perfection put to music
Gravity - Decent at best
New songs - Not good.
I don't like the evolution of their music. I mean, if they choose to put heavy music around their lyrics, I can deal with it. The music sets the mood for the lyrics. But when you go ahead and dumb down your lyrics to Top 40 levels, and just stopped putting an effort into making each song a masterpiece, I can't help but feel disappointed. The lyrics are weak now, and there's no changing that. Unless OLP majorly rewrites their songs and maybe adds some complexity to them like the lyrics in Happiness or SM, I will feel let down.

I like the new music so far. Well, at least it has potential.........but Raine's lyrics are one thing I wish he went back to developing. It felt like they were evolving quite nicely over the last few records. I understand they went for simplicity on Gravity, but for an album that seems a little deeper in motivation, Raine's lyrics just don't seem to be that thoughtful. Simple is good. Simple (intellectually) isn't.
They don't make music for us. They make it for themselves.
well then i guess when raine says at shows that they make music for us and the fans are what its all about, its a crock of shit then. OLP is one of the only bands that i know of who are honest about what they are. people don't make music "for themselves". do you honestly think they sit around listening to their own records all the time? they make records to express feelings to the world and to tell a story.
man, before you post about music, maybe you should learn something about it first. that goes for ANY music, not just OLP

Whoa Rayn,
WTF did you say that for?? While I do agree with your point to a certain degree you shouldn't shoot your mouth off about it.
And OLP DOES make music for themselves...........they aren't slaves to the masses........they bring their own personal views and experiences out........its quite clear that they love playing for themselves, and hope we appreciate what they have to say as musicians.

yea they play for themselves because they enjoy playing, but they don't make a song and say, hey this is a sweet song and keep it for themselves, they release it and play because they want us to enjoy it.
why do you think its hard to get explanations for alot of the songs? because they want us to make our own explanations and apply it to our lives. which is one of the reasons gravity is a sub-par olp record. it doesn't have that depth behind it.

I agree with the depth. I love trying to figure out the meanings of songs. Like Supersattelite.............to me it was about opening our senses and perceptions to the world around us........acting as a "supersattelite". I never really dug into that song before.........(I was on crack for a few years)
today i listened to teh nickelback song.....for some reason i put raines voice to it and it sounded alot like something off of gravity, i'm not saying this to make a point it's just something i actually had happen, and i'm sure you'll tell me that nickelback sounds nothing like gravity, but the main difference is Chads voice is SOOO much diffrent then Raines, that's the main thing left keeping olp olp

I meant that they're not going to take suggestions from people. Like, if someone said to them "do this and I'd like your songs more" well I don't think they'd do it, because they don't make other people's music, they make their own music. I obviously didn't mean they make music so they can play it for themselves, that's stupid. They're going to make the music that they want, that they feel proud of, and that they feel conveys a certain emotion. And yes, I am aware that plenty of people on this board go to many concerts per tour. But when you compare those numbers to the rest of the people that fill out the 2000 - 6000 seat shows, it really doesn't compare. Hey, maybe they should be grateful to us, but I don't see it that way. And ummm.... I didn't say anyone was a horrible fan, I was posting my opinions on OLP, and never did I once call anyone a 'horrible fan'. And maybe the reason why people are leaving this board is because they can't post without being subject to personal attacks from a bunch of immature people that obviously don't want to hear other opinions that don't agree with theirs. I should learn more about music? Okay.

But once in a while OLP can maybe rotate their songs. They're been touring since before Gravity was released, and look at what they've been playing. For the most part, it's been the same 19 song set, with The Wonderful Future for like two shows, and a couple new songs. But beyond that, there's been no change. It's been well over a year now, they can try to add different songs to their setlist. Their biggest change so far has been the elongated guitar intro to Starseed. That's nice and all, but give me a break, some people want more.
When their new cd comes out in 2017, think about what will happen to the setlist. Replace the non-singles from Gravity for songs from the new album. That only gives OLP a spot to play 4 songs off the new album, so some lesser known songs will go from the set. Odds are, OLP is going to keep the singles because people know them, so say goodbye to The Birdman and Are You Sad. They'll be gone. That would leave OLP with a 19 song set with new stuff and singles, nothing more. If it comes down to that, I won't go to their shows anymore. I've seen the singles enough times to die happy without hearing them live again.

Well, just think. If OLP had the potential to release something so amazing as SM, well I'm sure there's hope for the future. You just gotta listen to In Repair..hehe..all I can say is that I'm sooO appreciative for the 4 albums that blew my mind away. I miss Emtee. Well, don't we all? He made the band awesome. It was his choice to leave, and he's probably never coming back, so there's no hope for that. I'm sure OLP remembers what they've accomplished and are just testing new music now. They'll go back once they realized that Made Of Steel doesn't even compare to Naveed. Raine was bashin' that guitar so hard it looked like it was going to break. Made of Steel? I dun think so. That is all.
