I never knew it was so great to live in Welland... Let's run it down shall we?
1. Power only goes out for 4 hours. Once power resumes everyone goes back to living life. Even the intersection lights are working as normal.
2. They announce Ontario will go through rolling blackouts, and all areas will be affected at some point or another. Not Welland.
3. I was able to watch Conan Thursday night do his show in the complete dark.
I'm sure there are other benefits but oh well... considering welland is never a real good place to be most of the time, this was one time it was.
I can't wait until the day schools are over-funded and the military is forced to hold bake sales to buy planes.

Mine actually wasn't that bad either, in terms of length. My power came on at 11:40pm, which was pretty great. I would have watched tv or something and laughed because my friends were powerless until the wee hours of the morning.

Oh, i agree...I love it when things happen to make the world remotely interesting. I loved thinking that all of Ontario was in the dark, or scrounging (sp?) around for flashlights/candles, trying to survive without they're oh so precious tv/computer etc. etc. I wish it had lasted a bit longer so it could actually make some impact...
I think it was cool how people did react in that short time. There was hardly any looting, people were giving each other rides home, regular people were helping out directing traffic, people sleeping on the sidewalks in Times Square and not getting robbed or killed. For some reason, after 9/11, you'd expect some panic, but really there wasn't any. Sorta gives a bit of hope we're not as bad off as it seems.

i didnt even GET your txt msgs from that night till 8 pm which confused the hell out of me since i had 4 txt msgs arrive one after the other that were sent or recieved at like "1 pm" from my bro in response to my txt msg sent at 4 something about the lack of power, and then the 3 from you which according to my phone were recieved at 1:11 pm, 2:27 pm and 4:38 pm..
it mustve been certain areas yeah .. cause no problems were experienced in jax as far as i know

muhahahaha Manitoba is completely self-powered, in fact we sell power to much of america. Manitoba has the most fresh water in all of north america (look at a map). Therefore we throw up a few cheap dams and make millions selling it to everyone! PLUS no power outages for us! Serves you people right for buying Quebec power and not Manitoban! ya actually thorold and Welland border eachother (but it's just rural and really doesn't count). The actually town of Thorold though is as Joey said 10-15 mins away.

We had a big ice storm 2 years ago and my power was out for 3 and a half days... it was reallllly realllly cold

In Kingston, we're still being ordered to conserve power/water. Most stores have about half of their lights on (the main lights stay on, but the stuff like window showcase lighting is off). Yet, in NY, they've got the place lit up like the fucking fourth of July. Yeah, thanks for helping to keep the grid stable.
Rob, all of their power plants are fixed now, so they're able to run power to everyone. It's the Canadian government that are being stubborn bastards about the power. It's not New York's fault that the government keeps telling you to watch out for power. Hell, Detroit still has to because we don't have all of our plants fixed yet, but we're doing fine.

It's the same here .. certain stores in the mall have cut their power and ac in half .. which i don't mind .. but it pissed me off today when I went to drop off my film at the 1 hour photo place in Walmart and it's now taking 4 hours

The whole grid is still unstable. If it is here, it is there, too. We're still not up to 100% power, and it would sure help a lot of places like NY weren't using it all up on thousands of neon signs and advertisments.
not all plants are fully up and running either
nuclear stations had to go into a safety shutdown thing which meant they had to stay shut down for 3 or so days (in ontario atleast)
3 of those plants will come back online on thursday but wont be operational at fully capacity for a few days.. (which is why the grid instability is such a problem)

It's not just Ontario's government either. Right now we're at "critical" level, and some places are having rolling blackouts. If places like NY would stop lighting up places like Time's Square, they could actually start using the power sharing program to get us back up to normal. After all, it was plants in the US that failed, and caused us to fail because of the sharing program.
