I've always said Made of Steal sounds like a Moffatts song...

The band has every right to go in their own direction. We also have every right to discuss this direction and form discussions about it.

As for Flea... I'm not sure what you're thinking but Blister is one of the best songs they've ever made. I think that's almost unanimous throughout the CM. Of course that's your opinion but I think we're all questioning that one.
I gotta agree with Rob... :freak:

Apparently two songs that nearly any OLP fan would say are among their best, are lacking something? What could be done to make Blister better? The melancholic sound to that song provided by the acoustic guitar with little backing with the electric sets the mood up for the lyrics perfectly. The erractic drum beats to that song give it a frantic feeling, like the lyrics try to portray. The usage of Raine's falsetto adds so much to the song. The only thing OLP could have done to make it any better was add some strings to it, but that would have been too much.

Now look at Made Of Steel. Not so great lyrics. There is an overblown usage of metaphors that really sounds like he is stretching for stuff to say he'll be there. The chorus was weak. The music was too straight forward. Lack of falsetto. The music didn't fit around the lyrics, it just seemed like they jammed out one day and decided to throw some random shit over the music.

And Flea, when you say the band doesn't owe us anything, think about it again. We're the fans. We're the ones that buy their cds. We're the ones that go to their concerts. We're the ones that support their lifestyles. We're the ones that have been fans for years and years. I've been a fan since I heard Starseed, and you're telling me they don't owe me 10 songs of ABOVE AVERAGE ALTERNATIVE ROCK MUSIC? I am not asking for another Spiritual Machines or Happiness... I just want some decent music.

I don't listen to their new stuff online because I don't wanna be let down. I don't wanna hear their new songs and feel like it's Gravity all over again. That is why I just plan on waiting until the cd comes out, because if they produce another Gravity, I don't see myself buying it the day it comes out, or buying it at all. Hell, the only reason I bought Gravity was to have the band sign it at an instore. I would like to believe they care about their loyal fans enough to put out good music like they used to.
I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging. But I heard my own breath and had to face that I'm still living. I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings. I'm not dead... My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant. There's no end.

First off....

I don't even like Made Of Steel... I posted that it's my least favorite song... what i did post is that Bob Rock made it somewhat presentable.

Second... I never said OLP didn't owe us anything, so don't put words in my mouth. However they still did. They went out and tried something differen't. Just like Radiohead did with Kid A, just like DMB did with Everyday (which is there worst album). OLP gave us the gift of not remaining stagnent throughtout every album

Third... music isn't supposed to fit around the lyrics. Have you ever written a song? A song starts with guitar rifts and then you add the lyrics. The lyrics are supposed to fit along the music.

As for Blister and Hope. Those songs could have been made better. When OLP first had the 30 second clip of blister online .. I remember listening to it thinking this song is going to be great. Then I bought the cd and actually heard the song. I was very dissappointed. The song starts out way to slow. Hits the first chours then sorta picks up. The second verse is good. But something is missing, you can just tell that they could have worked harder on it to bring something out... almost like they said "there thats good lets put out the album"

As for "Hope" god this song could be evern better if only Raine could have followed the line "In to the dark, is there anyboddy there?" Everytime I hear that I'm just waiting for him to continue with some sort of chorus but then it drops back into "my god she said" and tottaly throws it off tempo. Don't get me wrong it's a great song, but if he could have just added one or two more lines to that part it would have been amazing.

Also someone has to hand it to me... I'm doing an awful good job standing up on my own for my thoughts. It's like 500 on 1 here, but oh well.

yeah. i'm with the rest of the gang here. blister is one of the greatest things ever put on a cd.

and sorry, shithead, i write lyrics first, then music. it makes my songs more sincere.

No matter which order you write in, the music and the lyrics should still match up a lot better.

Yeah, I do lyrics then music. I shouldn't have to make words that fit around a beat. The two should work together to make something amazing, just like Blister does for every other OLP fan.

ya I've also heard Raine say he has the vowel sounds mapped out and then uses that as a basis for his lyrics. But either way songs can be constructed around lyrics or music.

Flea, what the fuck are you talking about with speeding up and slowing down and throwing the tempo off? take a metrognome and listen to these songs. I guarantee you they stay the same speed the whole way through. if you're saying the feel changes then say that, don't try to talk about tempo when you obviously have no idea what that is.

Woah. I'm watching a thing on Metallica in the studio with Bob Rock (I think it's an older thing), and James does the exact same thing. He gets the mellody first, then fills in lyrics.

Yeah, because obviously it's ruined Raine's lyrics in the past 10 years... :freak: :wtf:

Quiet you.
It was more the thought of Raine being anything like Metallica that caused that short but sweet comment.

First he writes like him, now he's using the same producer!

Hell, I think Raine is just James in disguise.

Holy crap guys...give Flea a little room to breathe. He's stating his opinion! Since when was that not allowed on the CM? Just because he disagrees with the opinion of the majority doesn't mean that he has to take all the abuse and stuff. Sheesh.

PS: I wasn't directing my post at Jeff and Dabekk (sorry, i don't know your real name). I just used their posts as examples.

I actually think a lot of writers do the same thing. I'd imagine Raine and James aren't the only two, and it's not a Bob Rock thing either.

^ is the reason Gravity was made. They went to Bob Rock because he can produce songs that draw in the fans. People don't like to hear Raine's high pitched squeals so Bob tells him what the public thinks, and therefore Gravity is made, enabling the band to reach out to thousands more fans and millions of prospective ones as well.
