OLP's best lyrical song?

I don't hate Gravity. I love Bring Back the Sun, and select verses throughout the album, but thats about it.
Gravity didn't go over well with the hardcore fans because its so simple and that not what they thought they would get. It was a shock, really.

That was exactly it.......BUT I guess I try to live by "things change, roll with them" :lol:

Album number 6 is going to be amazing, I truely think so.

hmm, wow, ive never thought of it like that before, but now that i do, i really see it. raine said it was about someone looking for god, but when you think about it, the two are very closly related.

personally I'd have to say IAH. Gravity is by far the weakest, it doesn't even compare lyrically to any other album. Unless you enjoy simplicity, I don't understand how anyone could really find Gravity lyrically amazing.

Furthermore I think it would be better to compare albums than songs. I think the songs on each album have the same depth in lyrics, and therefore each album could be grouped as one. Not to say there aren't individual songs that stand out, but this is much easier really.

so here's my list:
Happiness...
Clumsy
Naveed
SM
Gravity

Happiness is above the others hands down. Clumsy and Naveed are pretty even but I always felt Naveed was somewhat rushed in the lyrics department. SM has a couple excellent songs like TWF, and In Repair, but some things are lacking (ie. Life). Which leaves me with Gravity and I think it's pretty safe to say that there are many songs on that album that are poorly written, with the exception of maybe BBTS.

hahahahaha. i could have written gravity in my sleep. the lyrics are so fucking awful. do you like it is the worst song raine's ever written. i don't care what it's about, the lyrics are incredibly cliche and overused, not to mention crappy.

The only part I agree with you on is this. Before I ever liked OLP I heard SOT and heard "on a bed of nails I wait", and thought oh God, he ripped off U2.

I agree with Jonathan and Neil. Just because the lyrics aren't metaphorical, doesn't mean they're not good. They are simpler, but I enjoy it sometimes. Yes, I like music to inspire me, and yes, I like to think about it. But sometimes I don't wanna sit there and think...what is this about? Maybe I want it to say flat out what it means once in a while. Plus, I had no idea that Do You Like It was about that. So maybe it's not as straightforward as it seems.

Sleeping In is alot deeper than the title makes it sound.

I forgot to mention...my favorite song lyrically (and well just overall) is Made To Heal.

I think OLP's best lyrically written album was Happiness... but thats just my opinion.

Problem is.... how do you know 100% of the time the lyrics mean something. You don't. Just because raine wasn't poetic doesn't mean the lyrics were bad. In fact Raine has made coments about Bob Rock challanging him to write what he was really trying to say. Which, as a fan excites me that Raine had to dig a little bit more. So what if the lyrics are somewhat simplistic and he doesn't use "big" words. His lyrics are emotional, and as a fan thats all that is important.

"I'd burn our initials in the sun if it would shine" -- great lyric
"I'm bleeding by myself and I'm ok" --- great lyrics

both extract emotion, and you can feel that pain that they're written with.

However, I do admit that the first 4 tracks on the album are a bit lyrically weak. Though SWOT does have one or two bright spots... but it's still a typical radio friendly song at that.

Also if you didn't like the lyrics of Gravity.... what do you think of Not Afraid and Our Time Is Fading?.... I thought those to songs were extremely weak lyrically.

i think not afraid and our time is fading are both pretty good lyrically. Our time is fading isn't great and is fairly simplisticbut it still has lines that you wouldn't find on gravity "cut my wings, I'm growing them back today", "tomorow's a bribe". With Not Afraid it's hard to know because of the different versions but the chorus I definately like and the "It's like the sky is falling down" part.

ya I think the lyrics are definately becoming more meaningful. I think that the songs we've heard so far are a good indication that the lyrics are getting better

That's obviously why you think Gravity is so deep and inspiring. It's just the only one simple enough for you to understand. :roll:

I don't see how that is a bad lyric. To me it means that you can't put stuff off till tomorrow that you can do today cuz things change and you or others might not feel the same way. What's so bad about that??

1. Its not if the lyrics mean something when they were written. It's what they mean to you.
2. Good point on the emotional lyrics thing.
3. I never said I didn'ty like the lyrics of Gravity, just why the simpler lyrics can sometimes be worse than complex stimulating lyrics.
4. I thought Not Afraid had pretty deep meaning. Take a look over the new lyrics. The second verse and bridge are twice as good.
5. I agree with you on OTIF. It has a weird kindof meaning to it about time passing and whatever, but thats good that i can't figure it out yet. Same thing happened to me right after I heard things like Thief and i had no idea what they meant.
6. If you're worrying about album 6 and thinking it will turn out worse than Gravity, just keep in mind, the songs you have heard live aren't necessarily the final projects.
Now that i have shown you i can count, i will be leaving.

i think raine made up that thing about the music industry as the meaning for "do you like it" for some reason it seems to contrived.

the good news you can get Metallica's new album in Eckerd so you can only look foward to see the new OLP cd stocked in your local drug store!!!

I think OTiF is much stronger lyrically than Gravity.

And about Not Afraid, I can't make an educated opinion. I absolutely love the song and am extremely excited about it, but it's rather obvious that Raine babbles the (unfinished) lyrics at the Junos.

I'm going to wait until i hear a finished version.
