I didn't wnat the first to use the word! but an answer to the original post: YES! and maybe it's not the guys themselves that are selling out, maybe it's Sony cahsing in. Regardless, OLP are now releasing DVDs that are nothing but tools to get records sales up, opening for pop acts that will get them nothing but teenybopper fans who they ONCE didn't want as fans. now, all the sudden, "Avril is good exposure" like i said in the other thread, backstreet are good exposure too. go open for them. its the only thing left to do. I hope this is all Sony and they are as unhappy about this as we are. I don't consider being successful selling out...Im glad if theyre all over thetelevision. I consider compromising your self-respect in order to further your career selling out. I agree that everybody starts bitching as soon as a band starts to get popular, but when something is obviously happeningin front of your eyes.....I never thought Gravity was selling out. Anyway, so I hope that this is ALLLLL Sony. I hope all of this is to blame on SOny.

i mean, they completely changed their sound, lyrics, image, EVERYTHING.
and mike said he would leave if our lady peace started being about something other than the music. and, well, he's gone.
i don't think OLP ever said they didn't want "teeny bopper" fans their music just didn't appeal to a younger age and now it does. OLP are not dumb they want to be rich and they are getting off to a pretty good start. As long as they keep old songs in their sets I will still go see the shows.
yeah. i mean, i'll go see olp every chance i get and i'll listen to the first four albums over and over and a few songs of gravity every now and then, but they're not sincere any more. they have sold out. i'll say it again in paraphrase: mike said he'd leave when the band sold out and mike left. draw your own conclusions.

DUncan on young girls: "not that there's anything wrong iwth being a twelve year old girl...." that whole thing. i posted it earlier and i dont wnat to type it out again. they always said it was bad for the music when people focus on raine's looks and what not, which it is.
but yeah, as long as they keep the old songs in there, i'll be at every show. and i still love them the same. can't blame them for wanting to make money I guess....

I need someone to confirm this. Is OLP still on the same contract they had 10 years ago? If the band is being coerced by Sony, forced to agree to terms like "You guys must sell these many records or else we'll terminate your contract", or do they still have complete control over their music. If it's the latter, then none of us can blame Sony, and I didn't hear anything about OLP renewing their contract.
Now I don't care much for them selling out anymore, I can live without them making new music. If they sell out, then I stop being a fan, simple as that, and they are already selling out, and I no longer like them as much as I used to.
Al's emails put a smile on my face, even though all they say is "You've got a private message!"

well, I think maybe Sony wants a certain level of success out of them or they are gone. Didn't they say they originally went in to do a live album? because from what I've seen, most of the time, say a band has a contract for 5 albums and they're(the label) is odne with them, but they've only had 4, they'll release a live album just to finsih out the ocntract, rather than having the band do another album and waste the time/effort/money on promoting it. I some how have a feeling maybe this is the case....maybe form DYLI? when he says "i hate myself for begging" you know, they got gravity...one last chance, whatever. but thats just my twisted little mind.

It's all one big contradiction. Sony and Bob Rock have basically reversed everything OLP stood for. Gravity is about breaking up and relationships, so are numerous other bands who hit it off big. We lost the deep songs, the falsetto, everything that made Raine or OLP to origionally establish us as fans. I still love thier old stuff, and just try to ignore what happens now. I never thought that OLP would become so commercialized but it isn't their fault. They wanted success and fame, someone offered it, so they took it. It's the whole the band really cares about us the fans thing. I used to think that was there, now I don't really. The Spiritual Machines Tour vs. the Gravity one I saw was complete opposites. Spiritual Machines tour had moving, that animated backdrop that we've grown up with throughout OLP, Raine's fun spaz stuff, and more comments directed towards the individual crowd. His little staged jumps from balconies or grabbing of Steve was what he did at most of the other shows. Just as if all the people there, even the ones singing to the songs were just another ticket in the bank. He had this blank stare, just standing there with the cord wrapped around his hand, like he wasn't even human now. Like he was just a pawn of the powers that be. I mean, fingertight showed more emotion and feeling for the people there that night, and they were just a 4-6 song opening act. OLP is still my favorite band, and I hope they continue what they rightfully deserve. It's just when I see these teeny bopper girls saying, "OMG I want Now 11, it has so many cool songs like that one by OLP." Crap like that makes you wonder if you are happy or not with what happened to the band. It's the whole wanting OLP to be my underground secret cool band, and the fact that I'm probably just a pissy old fan who won't accept change. One of those revelations that takes a topic like this to inspire, to realize OLP isn't our little baby anymore. I probably spelt stuff wrong and don't make sense, but you can get the general idea.
personally i don't think they're going to sell out. They might get close to selling out but even they hate some of teh things they end up doing, like WHATEVER. I think sooner or later they'll draw a line and sat fuck you teen girls... and then we'll be like and then the little teen girls will be like and then OLP will be more kickass then ever. I say that if anyone will sell out in the band it would be Raine, because all the girls think he's so hott and all but then he's maried so he's got to be cool and stuff. They could turn out to be another Smash Mouth ya know, chantal could have a baby and then we could all hate Pacific Coast Party.\
EDIT:
Why don't a bunch of us send complaint e-mails, all the same exact ones with the same subject... they'll have to respond to one.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, if it wasn't for Bob Rock, OLP would have broken up. They said it themselves "We were actually planning on taking a break, but when we went to Bob, we felt a new energy and it all started coming together" (not exact quote, but you get the jist of it).

Perfect example of them contradicting themselves. Now we head over to the live CD that came packaged for more people to buy Gravity. OLP's comments on the back of the cd (similar to comments on the dvd) are as follows. "The Spiritual Machines tour cemented the connection we have with our fans and inspired us to make Gravity as quickly as we did. This is a small glimpse of that special tour."-Our Lady Peace, September, 2002. I remembered that Bob Rock comment and when I read that I was like, this doesn't make sense. I guess they will say anything now to make us all happy, or Sony is up to no good. This new energy was basically starting from scratch, calling themselves practically a new band, it's a wonder they didn't change the band's name all together. Bob's Rockers!
Guys. They're touring with Avril Lavigne. That's it. It's not the end of the world. It's a month tour. That's all. I know that's not it, because, yes, I know a lot of you were disappointed by Gravity. But I personally was part of a conversation with Jeremy about it and Bob Rock, and you could see the sparkle in his eyes when he was talking about it and how much they all love the album and how great it was working with Bob.
They did not sell out. They haven't sold out. Sony is EVIL. They're behind this tour, I can almost guarantee it. There's no way OLP would volunteer themselves to open for Avril Lavigne. Seriously. Just step back and relax a bit, guys. This isn't the end of the world.

I think it's funny how people continue to blame Bob Rock for their disappointment .. blame OLP, you know Raine, Duncan, Jeremy and Steve .. remember them? Not so much Steve, but the others CHOSE Bob Rock because they liked him so much, they CHOSE to simplify things, they're CHOOSING to stay with Bob Rock .. this is all decisions they have made, not were forced into .. so before you go blaming Bob Rock .. let's stop thinking of OLP as mindless puppets who have NO say in anything
If you're gonna be disappointed .. be disappointed in the decisions OLP themselves had made .. stop placing the blame on someone who was CHOSEN to help them out, by the guys themselves .. and who OLP seem to have nothing but praise for .. they're obviously happy ..
By The Way.....the only way to see how good of a Guitarist Steve really is, is to see his contributions for the next album. Who knows, he may be a good guitar player on stage but, in the studio ,he may be lousy. Just gotta wait and see.
Exactly. That's what I'm trying to say. They're VERY happy with Gravity. Meaning, they haven't sold out. Mike probably left because if he *had* stayed, he personally would have been selling out, because he didn't like it... which is exactly the reason we were all told he left.
So, guys, come on. They haven't sold out. Just because you don't personally like the album doesn't mean the band doesn't. It's unfortunate that so many of you don't like it. I'm happy to say that I love it. But that's just me.
