“If we hadn’t made the decision to replace Mike (Turner, former guitarist), I don’t think we’d be here right now,” says Raine candidly. “When you’re in the middle of something and you’ve got a record deal you don’t want to rock the boat. But with the fifth album you get to a point where if you want to keep going you have to make a change. I don’t know if Mike was born to be a guitar player. The studio was a tough place for him and we were working too hard to make up for it – we felt like we were cheating ourselves. Four albums is way too fucking long to put up with that. I’m sure he’ll do great things, just not with six-stringed instruments.”
ouch.

Lick a finger: feel the now.

Youch indeed.
I'm not going to make a big deal out of it, but...I'm sure this topic will stay under massive debate (the Turner vs Mazur debate) for at least a week.
Does it bother me?
Not in the least.

How can he say that Mike essentially could not play the guitar very well, when the first four albums were fucking gold - they were masterpieces.
It's that music that made them into the enormously huge "Our Lady Peace" they are today, what establishd there fan base, etc...just doesn't seem right to me.

Although i seriously doubt it, i hope that raine's comments were somehow mis-understood.
If not...well i don't know what to say... I've played guitar for about 7 years, and apparently my Guitar God wasn't meant to play guitar.
Personally i think MT was a great guitarist, i'm not sure what Raine's talking about.

Lot of bitterness in the article. They also take a dig at Nickelback, which is okay, because Nickelback sucks a big hairy, but still. Lotta hatin' going down.

Fresh meat . . .

But frank z does have a point, we don't know how Mike was in the studio, but my guess as to why all the other records took so long in the studio is because back then they didn't just record a song and have it ready to release. You can't just record a song like In Repair and call it good, their songs had a lot of layers to them. Some of the songs on Gravity were recorded once and had practically no editing done to them. I recall reading somewhere that he had barely any experience playing guitar when he formed As If with Raine back in the early 90's, and if all of the bootlegs I've heard are any indication, Mike didn't do a lot of solos or play parts very different from the albums during concerts. This year, suddenly they are doing that, and while that doesn't say anything about whether or not Mike was a good or bad guitarist, I think it is an indication that Steve has more talent for playing around with his parts and making concerts more of a musically unique experience.

In an interview with a german magazine, Raine says that he respects Nickelback. Every Canadian is supposed to be filled with pride because of their success...

Fuck Raine Maida. Bitch.
And that bullshit about them being "artists" may have been true once, but Gravity screams cheesy, catchy entertainment. Our Lady Peace plays like a group of entertainers. You haven't seen a band play like artists and musicians until you've seen Tool live.
Mike Turner had all the soul in OLP, as far as I'm concerned. He was also a better guitarist than Raine is a vocalist.

The Article wrote:according to bassist Duncan Coutts, it’s their status as “musicians and artists, not entertainers” that distinguishes them from Nickelback
They just said that Nickelback aren't real musicians. I'd call that a dig. A true one, but that makes it hurt ALL THE MORE.

Sad to see Raine being all pissy at Mike, from what I've read in Mie-iviews, he's had nothing but good, good things to say about OLP. Look's like Raine stayed in the bitter barn a bit longer...
Anyways, I do miss Mike. I totally got the Nickelback=entertainers thing too. A few weeks ago I caught OLP and Nickelback together.
OLP had Raine climbing on crap, you know, the usual Maida performance, with the rest of the band playing great, etc.
Kickelback had fire, and tons, tons, tons, tons of pyro. Very little performing, just mostly stage effects.

"When looking up there, I just felt whole, like I belonged. Like one day I too would shine my most brilliant. Sitting there also made me think about sitting through services at my little country church back home. About that never-changing congregation of the same sixty-seven people and everyone has known you since before you were born. Now, out here in the real world, everything just seemed more vivid than when I used to sit in that little pew. That pew that was now so, so far away from where I was. I feared I had somehow left God behind there, too. I feared he was somehow just sitting there, saving my seat on the fifth pew from the front row, just waiting on me to come back. I left so quickly, I worried that he may not have noticed I was gone. And, now, I’m just too far away to find. So he’s just sitting there, patiently waiting on me to come back. I closed my eyes and prayed a moment. I hoped more than anything that he could still hear me." -an excerpt from my novella, A Sea of Fallen Leaves.

that's bullshit. people like you piss me off. yeah it sucks that mike left, but there's no point in bashing the band because they made a change. if something doesn't change then it becomes stagnant. Gravity doesn't sound like the rest of their albums, but then again, none of their albums sound terribly alike.
you can't judge a bands musical integrity because of a change in style. lots of people say that OLP sold out for this album. i don't get how this can be said. the band changed their sound and struck it big. it's not like OLP turned into O-town or n*sync. they just adapeted their sound.
people need to stop living in the past. if you're truly a fan of OLP you'll respect their decisions. i'm sure they have good reasons for everything that they do and we have no place to judge them because of it.
that's about all for my rant... i'm gonna go sit down and take a breather now.
i'd rather wait months for perfection than 10 weeks for a piece of shit.frank z wrote:None of us were in the studio with these guys!
