My friend sent me this article, and I thought that goose poop had been unfairly overlooked as a world issue in here.

A Regina man broke his collarbone in two places and is off work for at least six weeks, after being winged by an angry goose in Wascana Centre.

Jason Trehas said he was riding his bike through the park at about 5:15 a.m. Friday when he came up to a mother goose and about 15 goslings on the path. The goose flew toward him, hitting him on his left side and knocking him off the bike path and into a tree. The goose then fled the scene.

"It just wandered off like nothing had happened," Trehas said.

And while Trehas admits the bird was just protecting its young, he says things are starting to go a little foul on the banks of Wascana Lake.

"Other years there have been geese here and there, but now they're everywhere, and it's not only just the goose poop, if they're harming people that's an issue."

Ken Dockham, director of operations at the Wascana Centre Authority, says he's never heard of a goose attacking a human unprovoked and that many people who use Wascana Centre aren't in a flap about the park's goose population -- which has recently become a hot topic for some Reginans.

"I think most people would say they're kind of majestic, they're kind of nice, even if there are too many of them," Dockham said. "But (the geese) have got it made, really. They know that they're not being harmed, people feed them, the grass is good, why would they go anywhere else?"

Dockham says there has not been a significant increase in the goose population at Wascana Centre this year, and notes that rumours about three feet of goose poop on the bottom of the lake have been greatly exaggerated.

Wascana Centre Authority has tried a few goose-ridding gimmicks in the past, including blow-up owls and inflatable alligators purported to keep the birds at bay, with little success. Even the annual goose roundup, which attempts to re-locate about half of the park's geese to northern Saskatchewan, is largely ineffectual, Dockham said.

But after his run-in, Trehas has some ideas of his own.

"If some churches want to have some fowl suppers, I know where some Canada geese are," he says.

I don't really think you're a vicious, flea-bitten spreader of disease... but I like geese. :nod:

We've got lots of them, too... apparently, New Jersey is the furthest south they go when they "fly south for the winter". :lol:

Though, they tend to stay here year-round, anyway. :Johnathan:

I could just deal without their poop. Walking the track in gym class in high school SUCKED.

i do not like the geese. i was almost attacked by one before. when i run at nite they are always around and i try to avoid them as much as possible because i believe they are out to get me. they scare the crap outta me.

but that article made me laugh. The goose then fled the scene. :lol:

Oh, there's a very simple way of keeping the geese off of lawns and parks and such. They can install these thingies in the ground that emit a tone that humans can't hear but the birds hate. Voila. No pollution, no chemicals, no harm to anyone or anything, and NO GEESE!

I was attacked/chased by a goose once. I was holding a piece of bread behind my back to keep the various water-fowl in front of me from eating it all when the goose ran after it, so I ran away and it started chasing me and grabbing my coat. Then my dog was all like "Arf!" and the goose went away. That's my killer(slash hungry) goose story. :nod:

i live where this goose attack happened.

the goose issue is actually freaking huge in my city. the geese all tend to conglomerate at the one huge lake mentioned in the article, Wascana. people want to kill all the poor things, and are trying so hard to get rid of them.
it's really quite sad. because they've always been there..they always will be. there's much worse things to have around than geese, too.
simple solution to not get attacked by a goose - don't piss it off. it's simple. it's the same way with all animals. you piss off a dog, it'll more than likely bite you. you piss off a bee, it'll sting you. there isn't a problem with people getting attacked by geese. there is, however, a problem with people harassing the geese at the park. that's the issue that should be addressed...not the issue of poop and provoked geese 'attacking'.

anywho. i like the geese there. they've always been around. they're so damned cute. they cross the road a lot. did i mentioned they're damned cute? they're nice if you treat them nice. and if someone doesn't like the poop, they should know to bring a blanket. the lake woudlnt' be the same without the geese. they really shouldn't want to kill them because they poop and protect themselves, just like every other living creature.

i disagree. my mom was attacked by a dog and all she did was walk by it. same thing with bees. believe me i know not to piss them off cause i'm allergic to them but yet they still find a way to sting me. bees are evil. :nod:

and if people are harassing the geese, and they get attacked, well, that's their own fault then. i just don't like seeing them when i walk cause i'm deathly afraid one day they're going to eat me. especially when i see them in groups of 15 along the lake. but i do think it's dumb if they want them killed. i don't like them but they certainly don't deserve to die. one thing i never got bout them though is why they walk so freakin much when they could easily fly. if i had wings i would fly alot more than walk.
