But who determines where that line is drawn?

I was going to leave my post at that, and be all cool and mysterious and shit, but eh. I totally agree a line has to be drawn, but saying that Clumsy is to Gravity as Van Gogh is to an MSPaint of someone pooping is stretching things. And frankly, if Gravity isn't considered art, then to me, none of OLP is. I'm not saying Gravity was outstanding (it wasn't, in my opinion), but to say that it is bad enough that anybody who likes it more than OLP's other stuff should be shot in the face is a bit... extreme. Gravity was a huge change; maybe some people feel they changed for the better.

And, on that note, I'm just going to say that the guy pooping is art.

Just crappy art.

That's all in my opinion, of course.
I just wanna get out,

The guy pooping was a joke and an exaggeration. I thought that would have been implied ... guess I should have said that.

Okay, tell me, what about Gravity is more original, energetic, artistic, creative, lasting, powerful, ingenius and/or compelling than Clumsy?

In any category of what makes art good (that is, of course, general categories), Gravity was a step back. Like man re-growing a tail and getting a little hairier. Sure, it happens now and then. It still functions for a general purpose. But it's ugly, it doesn't fit, and it's anti-productive. Now, there are those out there who find hairy men with tails sexy. These folks will buy into it. In fact, there are a surprisingly huge number of these people. Problem is, they shag with these shaggy fellows for only a little while, then they toss them away like used meat. Sure, the hairy guys have some fun for a while, get some lovin', maybe even a few bucks on the side. But in the end, evolution will toss these unfortunate individuals aside and go for something better.

Just a hint, the hairy ones with tails are Gravity. Evolution of man is the development of art.

Heh, I knew the pooping thing was an exaggeration, I was just going with what I had.

Anyway, I tried showing some friends OLP, and one of them said she didn't really like them (the other two didn't say, um, anything). If she had heard Gravity, maybe she would have. It's not that it's a lesser form of art, it's a different form of art. We've come to like OLP's sound, so when they deviate from the sound we've come to love them for, it's naturally unwelcome.

Just to clarify, I'm not saying you have to love OLP's new stuff. I think it's WAY worse than Clumsy, or any of their other albums, and were I to come across someone who though Gravity was the best so far, I would go, "I disagree strongly."

Um, I kind of forget where I was going with this. Oops.

I think you're taking this way too extremely Axtech.

Although Gravity is my least favorite OLP record, I still find redeeming things in it (and I'm sure you do too). It's clearly a matter of opinion. The thing about Gravity isn't that OLP is doing a "dumber version" of their older stuff. They are doing something they haven't done before. They didn't make a "Happiness" and take out the weird effects, they did something completely different, and because of this different people will like it.

Take Chart magazine for example. The reviewer claimed Gravity was "exactly the way OLP should sound" and they should "plant a big kiss on Bob Rock" or something along those lines. You can bash this reviewer for his opinion, but, especially in the music field more than any other, opinions are going to differ from yours. This guy is a reviewer who heard all OLP's music and prefers Gravity. And, unless you got to him, I would be willing to bet he hasn't been murdered for it.

everything is just a matter of opinion really... some people like gravity more than sm, some people like sm better than gravity... who cares really? it's all the same band.

Hey,,, I have an idea ... lets argue about Gravity some more... because every fucking Topic in this forum ends up that way. Sorry for the language but I'm sick of it... if you didn't like the album fine keep your mouth shut, god knows we've all heard your opinion 500 million times... quit bictching already.

I happen to like the album, just as much as clumsy and more than Happiness.. so why don't you kill me for it. To me Gravity sounds more like a band making music than a producer sitting in a studio pressing buttons.

Gravity is like Radiohead releasing Pablo Honey after releasing Kid A. Both are great albums but if Kid A would have came out first everyone would have hated Pablo Honey for not being creative.

Hey, you know what? If you don't like it, don't read it. Simple isn't it? For fuck sakes read the name of the thread. I think it's pretty damn obvious that Gravity would be brought up in a thread about OLP's future.
I can't wait until the day schools are over-funded and the military is forced to hold bake sales to buy planes.

blahdy blahdy blah. who cares? Everyone is gonna keep arguing over it no matter what. No use trying to stop it. One person always says " can we stop arguing" and then someone else will say " don't read it then".. same crap..so it will never end

For the ten billionth time, let me just say that I actually like Gravity. NOT because it's OLP and I "have" to like it. I wasn't even a hardcore OLP fan til after Gravity, for crap's sake. And, sorry, but I'm not goin' anywhere anytime soon. :P

You guys can dislike it all you want. But don't act like those of us who do are only into OLP as a "passing fad" or something. And, please refrain from phrases such as "anyone who thinks Gravity is better then Clumsy deserves to be shot", too. It's just immature and self-centered to think everyone should feel the same way as you, then back it up with crap like that.

That is all.

*sigh*

"Let's not fight about Gravity"

Yes, let's just completely ignore a big change in OLP's career. I mean, it's not like this is an OLP message board or anything.

For the last time, I know it's a matter of opinion. As I said, it's all subjective. However, liking a piece of art and calling a piece of art inferior are two very different things. Personally, I'd rather pin that pooping guy on my wall than Van Gogh, because it's got a demented sense of humour. However, I would never consider the pooping guy a more artistic piece of work.

Nope that wasn't to you.

And I know that my opinion isn't a fact. But the fact of the matter is that I think they've gone back a huge step with Gravity. All of my arguments aren't saying "You HAVE to believe this!" I'm just explaining my view.

Also, none of this (at least from me) is being taken "way too seriously". I'm just defending my position. I'm surprised that people see Gravity as a worth-while venture. I've been giving the reasons that I don't see Gravity this way, which are also the reasons that I'm surprised at other people's view of Gravity.

You're totally entitled to it Axtech. I agree with that.

I had an earlier point that I couldn't post because the site was down so here it is.

Its not really about the music............some people act like things are facts and can't accept differing opinions...........it gets all heated because people think they are "right" about their own opinion (which is kind of funny). Like they need assurances or something that their opinion is the correct one.

These arguements will probably never stop...........that's fine........I just wish people would handle themselves with a little more maturity when discussing things..

I think Gravity is a solid album and the reason why people dislike it is because they've gotten use to the way OLP was before Mike left.

I disagree. It's not that I'm used to the way OLP was, I just appreciated, respected and enjoyed the first four albums more.

I think Gravity is of lesser quality, but a lot of the music is still very catchy and succeeds for still being aggresssive and edgy pop rock....if that's acceptable to some people. In terms of craft, the other 4 were much better........I look forward to a blending of the two.
