Oh man I forgot all about the Teardrop cover. I think that's probably his best vocal performance of his life, I'm not exaggerating.

OLPManiac wrote:Guys i read on the General News thread this "He says he's back to his old days when questioned whether he could still sing like the past. Admits he hasn't been able to." that Raine told on the interview on the radio yesterday...then i think that now Raine isn't able to sing in the coutertenor or whatever it is...i'm not a musician then i don't understand much! I want only to report this!

I don't understand the quote.... Did raine say he could song like he used to, or that he can't?

I assume age has taken it's toll. He can still sing, but I remember seeing a side by side comparison of automatic flowers at the time of its release and on a more recent tour. He can still sing the songs, just not like he used to. I think that curve likely was him learning to be comfortable with himself again. I don't think we can expect anything like some of the old live clips from the 90's (thinking about the old tear drop covers here), but what I do think we can expect is him progressively becoming more complexed and comfortable with where he is, and essentially continually moving away from the burn burn sound as he really rediscovers himself...

The "gravely/low" vocals sound more natural to me then forced. I think that's just how he is now. Biology just works like that. Listen to tom waits first and last albums for example. yeah, some of it is style, but some of it is life.

Just my theory. I expect a lot more on this album, but not sm/happiness level. Raine is free to prove me wrong. I'll even eat a copy of HIPT if he does.

Also i don't understand completely because i didn't hear the interview...i report only for the hot debate that there was here :)....however yes he can still sing in some way like the old days....but if we take "Everyone's Junkie" of 2000 era and we compare with the 2010 tour...we see that maybe he can't sing like old days...is only a personal opinion but for me he lost(maybe for the age) the "paranoid" sound of his voice...

I think they had the right idea there, only doing those vocals for certain blips, on again off again. Should have done that for "Allowance".

really?.. you're saying he's done the backing vocals wrong? even without hearing the whole song and where they fit overall? and telling him how he should have done it?

yes, that's maybe what they would've done back in the day but this is a new our lady peace album, which usually means a completely new sound. i'm all for creative criticism but thats just a tad ridiculous in my opinion. every single song ever made could be moulded better to fit the sound that you(or anyone) would prefer. our lady peace, raine especially, will never sound like they did, you could've also said that after every album they've made. i'm not saying they are free from criticism whatever but i think nitpicking at this point is just premature and will only frustrate yourself. i'm on the optimistic side, this album better not be shit :).

Just thinking out loud... not a criticism, just a thought that crossed my mind while listening to the RBY live clip. I still like the Allowance clip quite a bit, I was just sort of addressing others' comments about the Fran Drescher thing in passing.

Shit! After the listening of Allowance's clip the song keeps stuck in my head! It's amazing really! However i made a list of OLP's singles based on the number of the tracklist(i ever saw similiarities between them and then i made the list):
naveed 1 2 3 4 5
clumsy 1 2 3 5 7
happiness 1 5 7
spiritual 1 2 3
gravity 3 4 5
healthy 1 2 4
burn burn 1 2 4
curve 3

Then the song number one ever compare in the list of single(except Gravity)...Healthy and Burn Burn had the same singles(based on the number) but with Curve this trend will be stopped...however i think that Allowance will be a single or maybe we will see As Fast As You Can and Window Seat...hahahah ok guys i know that maybe i bored you but the waiting is hard :)
What are your picks for the singles?

In all fairness, it's raine's voice that is the most identifiable selling point to many fans.

No matter how he sings, its still very recognizable. Especially in a world Chad Kroeger wannabes.

Tis true, but tell that to almost every top 40 rock band.

I guess, but while surviving on bread and water keeps you alive, steak and potatoes is tastier. Raine's current singing style is basically average, nothing great or unique about it. His former style which made the band famous was interesting and unique. An argument could be made that musically the band might be better (though many would disagree), but I don't think an argument can be made that his singing has improved since SM, and I think it would be hard to argue that it hasn't decreased.

So did we determine if Raine just can't sing like that anymore or he is just not comfortable with it? I think if it's a comfort thing, if he would try he'd see a lot of old fans come back. There is not one person that can touch vocal delivery IMO like Raine during his naveed-sm days.

If you listen to all the clips in order real fast, his vocal delivery is all the same. the thing i'm hoping for the most on this album is raine just belting it out and giving it his all.
and if i don't make it know that i've loved you all along.

Ya Trusty, vocals are a pretty big deal to OLP fans. If you ask most people why they got into OLP in the first place, I'm sure they'll say that it's the passion and tone Raine exudes in his lyrics. The "paranoid" sound of Raine's early style was very unique and what made songs from Naveed->SM so popular. This debate about his style has been going on for almost ten years now, since Gravity! I let my girlfriend listen to the clips, and she said that it all sounds the same and kinda boring. Me personally, I'm able to appreciate the music as a whole, I don't rely on the vocals to determine a song's worth.

I think more than anything, as the music and the band has evolved, so too has Raine's vocal delivery, and I'm ok with that. Some might argue that it's too "mainstream" or "going against their roots", but to me they are still some great rock songs, they still get inside me in a way that no other band can, and I'm happy with that.

He does sing it in Healthy if you re-listen his voice is spot on in that album when he wants it to be.

But he's old. Listen to him talk now verses how he used to. Less nasal and edgy and more deep. Voices change. He's doing the best he can. He's like 40 isn't he? Unique voices like his don't always last.

I agree, there's not much more we can say that hasn't already been said, I just wanted to toss my two cents in. I'm sure we will have MUCH more to talk about in the next couple of weeks. Based on what we've seen so far in this thread, I have a feeling that Curve is going to be heavily scrutinized by the faithful. Let's try to keep it positive and constructive in here people :)
