I so wish they'd sell these bootlegs just like Pearl Jam does it. I'm sure they'd raise a reasonable amount of money. Fans would love to have these. It's a lot cooler to hear OLP raw and unedited like this than on their crappy Gravity DVD. THIS is what I want =~

Damn, this man doesn't age. I swear that he looks identical to what he looked like in 2001.

Another bang on performance here. Looks like "Life" might be becoming one of their "let loose" songs like Innocent where OLP gets more intimate with the crowds.

I always thought it was a mistake that they stopped playing this song in its entirety, it has loads of energy and is about as catchy as Innocent is...those years of brief interludes didn't have the same effect.

I loved the video, but like Flourescent said the audio sounded off. Raine sounded weird and mehh and duncan sounded like a little girl trying to squeal almost?? is it just me??? I thought it sounded amazing though when I was there

LOL. Sorry... I don't like it too much. I think it's overproduced, too much overdubs and postproduction for me.

Hoping they break out some older non-singles for the second set sometime soon, since they had a Facebook thread asking for our requests before the tour started...

JUST got back from the Spiritual Machines concert at Massey Hall.

Words cannot describe. It was incredible. The energy was amazing. They did a great job with the first set - Jer and Steve were totally kicking ass and Raine was spot on. What surprised me was the energy of the second set. As Raine said "the work is over.. now we can have some fun." And we did. It was a complete party all the way through to the encore with people just going nuts with every song. AMAZING.

I saw them in Chicago in 2005 and I gotta say I was at least somewhat disappointed. Whatever spark they lost, they had completely recaptured tonight. Tonight was a night I will be remembering for a long long time.

I think 2005 was just a bad time to see them live... they almost broke up during that year just around the time HIPT was released

I don't imagine that we will see a ton of videos from either of the Massey Hall shows - at least complete songs. On the first night I noticed several people being asked to turn off their cameras and on the second night patrons were specifically asked by ushers that they not record the performance. As well, on the second night there were security guards in the upper balcony looking down on the audience trying to spot the tell-tale LCD screens of possible tapers.

As for the performances, the band was in fine form. While I would say the band seemed to enjoy playing SM more than Clumsy in the album set, it was the case for both nights that Raine was much more animated in the 2nd set.

Raine's voice also seemed to seriously improve on the second night. It may have been where I was sitting on the Clumsy night (LCB), but I thought Raine was buried in the mix and seemed to be struggling. Not so on the second night.

Standouts over the two nights for me:

- 4AM on both nights with Raine singing it was fantastic.

- IAH with the audience singing it and Raine playing it simply with an almost flamenco style tuning was an intimate and warm way to approach it without the synths. FYI - the audience continues to fuck up the "painting fear" part of the sing-along. Raine seemed to notice this on both nights by singing/commenting "Awww" before the band came in to finish the last chorus.

- Apart from the albums, I think Escape Artist was the only new song over the two nights. It was an unexpected highlight.

- Jeremy playing the fuck out of the deep cuts on Clumsy. Like a man possessed, it looked like he was throwing his sticks at the cymbals at times.

- Duncan continues to be an understated stage presence and never misses a note.

- Raine on night two during the Wonderful Future. He commented that they wrote the song never imagining they would have to play it live. In fact, I think that's true of a number of songs. Good on them for doing this - I can't imagine the toll it must take to perform some those high notes for 20-30 dates. Someone get the man some lemon tea!

- Steve/Raine are probably the only ones available to breathe new life into the old tracks by improvisation, but it's Steve who really brought these songs to the rafters. His small solos in "Are You Sad?", "Naveed", and "4AM" were particularly noteworthy, though there were others.

- Raine's stage presence in the 2nd set borrows heavily from Bono (as does his inaudible spoken word/rap at the end of One Man Army) but is captivating to watch. Though there were a couple of times he looked bent over awkwardly and I thought he tweaked his back!

WTF moments over the two nights for me:

- The chick on the first night who tried to get up onstage during the first encore only to be thwarted by the band's security who kindly picked her up and deposited her back into the crowd.

- The onstage vamping was a bit weird. On both nights they have an intro video and on both nights they came out with a long two minutes left in the video and stood around before starting to play. Not bad, just weird.

- Raine's near-identical stage patter over the two nights as if nobody would go to both.

- Jeremy over-playing "The Wonderful Future" like he was trying to break his drums. He may just have been high in the mix but it sounded sped up and heavy handed. In any event, he earns cool points for managing to play the beat with one hand during the chorus while working the shaker. Impressive.

- Duncan's skinny jeans / borderline "jeggings" (seriously, I haven't been this weirded out since his naked side-ass saw print during the original SM press run).

- The onstage Macbook. It looked like Raine was checking email between songs.

- The chick on night 2 who pushed over several of her friends to get near Raine in the balcony during AYD. Amusing.

- The absence of any song from HIPT.

- There were some really, really old t-shirts. Saw one Summersault 2000 shirt and one of the famous "kneel down and obey" shirts that kids in my high school got in trouble for wearing. Why do people still have these?

Which reminds me, did anybody see this: http://blog.canoe.ca/ent/2010/03/12/olp ... ummersault

Also, I overheard a conversation between a guy who said he was Jeremy's cousin and another dude who knew way too much about the band. They got to discussing Jeremy's friendship with Matt Cameron and the cousin laughed about the infamous "mugging" story where Jeremy broke his leg prior to recording Mafia for SM. The cousin said it was baseball that really did him in. Interesting.

EDIT: I also have to mention my favourite song over the two night: All My Friends. This was a track I didn't really listen to all that much on the record, but live it is a serious powerhouse.

To be fair - the laptop was being used to control the videos.

I have to say I was disappointed in the second set being EXACT except subbing the clumsy songs for SM songs based on the night. (OK - they added 1 song) I spend about 300 dollars attending both nights including travel cost and I felt it cheapened the experience of the first night when Raines banter to the crowd in the second set was EXACT to the first nights second set. It felt like they were going through the motions, and I'm not ashamed to say I was flat out bored for the second set.

VIP left something to be desired too - it was nice to talk to the guys - but I read this:

An exclusive tour memorabilia book, a limited edition poster, and laminate FEATURING ARTWORK FROM THE ALBUMS PREFORMED THAT NIGHT

Now, we got the tour book - but it was disappointing to see our "posters" were mini versions of the show posters (at least they're numbered), and no laminates unless you count the fake little backstage passes. I think it should have been a full size poster, maybe something happened and they changed the package - or I didn't understand it properly - but that was kind of cheesy to me.

ON THE PLUS SIDE THOUGH -

The tour book is fantastic, and at the meet & greet Raine seemed a lot more sociable and happy then last time we met (Best Buy 2001 show afterparty) .

I don't want to end on a bad note - at the end of the night I'm just happy that they just played 2 of their 4 finest records in their entirety and I was lucky enough to take that in - Extremely appreciative of that.

I agree with Egotist on All My Friends. Steve rocked that song hard. Easily one of the top songs of the night.

I also laughed at the girl who got scooped off stage in 2 seconds by security. That was funny stuff. Pretty sure the girl in the balcony last night was trying to make a pass at Raine.

FOR SHAME!

Old band shirts = hardcore fan. But wearing the shirt of the band you're going to see...don't be that guy, ever.

FASHION REPORT SPOILER ALERT

Confirmed - Raine donned his "artiste chapeau" during the SM set and accessorized with a white scarf what was either a black blazer or a leather jacket. He came out for the second set in a v-neck shirt with a leather jacket.

During the Clumsy set on the first night he donned one of those hipster-style kaffiyehs and a leather jacket. For the second set, he pulled out a plaid shirt circa 1997.

Jer-o kept it white and simple but dangerous with an unbuttoned white shirt. Hair tied back in the first set and free to roam in the second.

On both nights Steve would play with a white shirt, black suspenders and a blazer concealing same until the second set. From this point on, the blazer was done, and the shirt would become progressively untucked until the suspenders were spurned in the name of unconstrained rocking.

This concludes the fashion report.
