wow... you're not going to hear that opinion very often about this film. The movie is getting incredible reviews in every country and has had astronomical (thanks laurel) ticket sales in it's opening weekend alone. 100.8 million dollars in north america and 201 million world wide. expect this one to be talked about in the media for a while.

Really? I couldn't stop making fun of it. What do you think makes it so good? I feel like I missed something now.

RDJ playing a hero character who wasn't a) dark and brooding or b) the geeky underdog, and doing a brilliant job of it

The humour! 10% thrust, Stark's robot assistants, etc

The special effects were kickass. The suit looked awesome.

The movie stayed true to its source material instead of cocking it up because the director's a douche (see: X-3, Spidey 3)

Only thing I would have changed would be the final battle, I thought it was a little anticlimactic, and I'd toss some more suit action in there but damn did they set up perfectly for a sequel.

The Bands Visit
I thought it was pretty good, the people I went with found it way too slow and uncomfortable. It reminded me of every band exchange I have ever been on.

SPOILERS IN MY POST, so don't read if you want to see the movie.

Anyone who says Sam Raimi is a douche should be watching UWE BOLL films. The man who created The Evil Dead series is looked up to by tons of filmmakers even today. He's like the CULT FILMS GOD! Granted, Spidey 3 I did not enjoy. emo peter parker? He's supposed to become violent and criminal!

I accidentally deleted some of what ihatethunderbay says in her quote, but she's right about Robert Downey Jr. He made this character come to life and did an awesome job at it. I used to read the Iron Man comics, and while Tony Stark in those comics isn't comedic, his darker more serious persona wouldn't translate well into film. They stayed very true to the comics with this movie though and that's one reason it was done really well.

Another thing that was done well was the directing without a doubt, but as soon as I heard that Jon Favreau was directing I was like YES!!! Why? Because he directed Zathura... now that might not seem like a big deal, it was a kid's movie, it's not legendary or a GREAT masterpiece of film that people talk about often, BUT he did that movie with as little CGI or computer rendered special effects as possible. They built TONS of different sets and actual effects that were happening in front of the actors. He wanted to go old school, the way they did movies before they had all of the computer technology and he still believes in doing things that way, even if it takes twice as long and is way more expensive. That being the case, I knew that Iron man wasn't possible without visual effects done on computers, but i knew that I wouldn't be looking at a movie like the HULK where the main hero is completely computer generated and that's always a good thing!

The downsides to the film... Gwyneth Paltrow. I've NEVER liked her acting... She's always been extremely overrated and this time she proves it. She had some of the WORST line reading I've ever seen. Normally I'd think my opinion is biased because of my dislike for her lack of skill already, but when other people in the theatre around you start making comments like "WTF WAS THAT!? That was Horrible acting!" You know you weren't the only person who's jaw dropped at how distractingly bad her acting was at some parts.

The other part that was cheesy was when Obidiah Stane, the bad guy says "MY SUIT IS MORE ADVANCED THAN YOURS IN EVERY WAY!" Okay... cut that line out in the DVD release please... He's using Tony's prototype model to create his suit... Sure, it's larger and stronger, but it's slower and clearly has less mobility... Not only that, but Tony freaking rips out wires in the back of the suit when he jumps on top of Obidiah... Yeah really advanced buddy... you left a bunch of important wiring free for people to rip out!!

The end fight was a bit short, but I liked that, because it FINALLY wasn't one of those hero movies that builds up to a huge climactic battle. How many times have we seen that? The whole movie was a great ride and it's the starting chapter of a superhero's life. I think that was an awesome thing. He wasn't supposed to be able to kick ass yet. He's new at this!

Anyway, that's just my opinion... and we're going to be hearing a lot about the success and great ratings Iron Man is getting for a long time.

Wasn't impressed with Iron Man from the beginning.

MORE SPOILERS!!

AC/DC - Back in Black - Well designed to fire up every nascar lovin yokel in the crowd!!

I can understand a terrorist being able to acquire WMD or at least the parts to make WMD. But why is you have all those parts yet you have to make a mold then manufacture from molten steel a fricken $0.87 gasket??

Standard action hero movie montage. So many things happening at once. Show it all or it will take to long. That's called a Montage! (Montage!!) Even Rocky had a Montage! (Montage!!) Always fade out in a Montage!

The head of your company and the man behind all of your companies ideas goes missing for 3 months but onyl when he comes back to announce their finished making weapons does the stock plummet 30 points.

Mega B-B-B-B-B-B-BOO YEAS for the Jim Cramer cameo though, got a kick outta that.

An "Arc Reactor" is that the best you can come up with? I never followed comic books so if that's the original term Stan Lee came up with back in the '60's it's cool.
Maybe it's just my opinion but I'd take a Flux Capacitor over an Arc Reactor any day.

What kind of multi-billionaire can't afford both a shop for the development of weapons and a garage for your fleet of expensive sports cars separate from each other?
I mean I mess with crap in my garage from time to time but at least I'm smart enough to pull my car out if I think stuff has the chance of flying around, much less flames hitting the hood of my car. (Which btw he must have developed some kind of nanonite molecular healing paint because the paint job on that Audi still looked perfect)

If you have all kinds of robot arms and robot assistants why then do you need Gweneth Paltrow to pull a cord out of your chest cavity?

On the subject wasn't that a ring I saw on her finger while performing that surgery?? That kind of kills the whole 'Scully v. Mulder are they ever going to hook up??' drama. She's probably already married to some rockstar husband w/ 2 kids named Apple and Bandanna.

And now a short time out for our sponsors:
Burger King - Home of the Whopper!!
Sprint - Yes our phones really do work as well as they do in the movies
Dell - Yes our PCs really look as good as they do in the movies
Audi - Our cars perform better than they do in the movies

Heres a sponsor they left out that would had come in handy:
Citrix - GoToMyPC.com

That wasn't "Hacking" into a "Mainframe" Paltrow did. She merely copied some files off a laptop or at worst off a file server. OMG that was some 733T H@x0r1ng $k1llzz

Why can't a guy who can come up with the iCurtain and the most advanced artificial intelligence available come up with a way to get the files he needs from home?

I wouldn't want to buy and home security products from Stark that allows any evil dude with a goatee to just waltz right into your home and pull your frickin heart out of your chest.

That was actually Downey's best work laying there as a sweaty pale, red-eyed heap on the couch. It's almost as if he went on a coke binge during shooting and they just went with it.

Downey Jr's delivery snappy delivery wasn't bad but it was too scripted and nothing out of the box.

If he had any dry cool wit I didn't notice it. Certainly no memorable catch phrase or war cry.

No 'Hasta la vista', no 'This chick is toast!', not even a campy 'Your circuits just been shortened' line at the end just before finishing the evil-doer off.

But in true comic book movie fashion the ending left the door wide open for a sequel.

I'm sure 5 years from now while Stark is running for President we'll see a cut scene of that same evil terrorist in war torn Afghanistan plotting Starks certain doom over a small flickering Arc reactor.

If your looking for an action flick turn over to AMC for the weekend Charles Bronson marathon.

If your looking for an option to entertain your 10 year old nephew after you've already been on the playstation for 5 hours straight then go see Iron Man.

first off, it's hard to take you seriously due to the grammar and spelling errors in your post. the difference between 'your' and 'you're', 'they're' 'there' and 'their', and 'to' and 'too' is something pretty basic.

women are allowed to wear rings on their fingers, fyi. i have one on my left finger, doesn't mean a damn thing. i also wear one on my right finger that means a whole heck of a lot. fancy that....something called fashion comes into play when women make jewelry choices. that's a realistic part of the movie!

i'm going to pass over most of the stuff about the plot...i'm not sure what was in the comic and what wasn't, as i haven't read it. perhaps those 'holes' and 'unrealistic' things were just the director staying true to the comic. crazy idea, eh?

um...cheesy lines aren't required when killing bad guys. it's terribly clichéd.

the main point that i want to make, aside from the lack of distinction between homophones in your post, is about robert downey jr. i've never really seen this man act before, but holy hell, i enjoyed him. he fits the role of iron man beautifully. i found him to be very funny and very enjoyable to watch. watching iron man, i want to now look into his past work. he played the role perfectly. i haven't enjoyed an actor in a movie this much in a loooong time.

normally, i'm not one for big comic book action movies. i was doubtful about this one, actually, but landon told me it was something worth seeing, so i went. i definitely don't regret that decision. sure, not everyone's going to like it, but it is definitely one of the best movies i've seen in awhile.

and that sequel?

damn, i'm looking forward to it.

Hi Laurel!

Last movie I watched was Cloverfield. Sweet movie and I hope it doesn't turn into America's Godzilla, since there is going to be an obvious sequel.

It definitely can be summed up with it's own tagline of "This is the way the world ends, not with a whimper, but with a bang." A reversal of the words written in the T.S. Eliot poem "The Hollow Men"

I think even if I watched it again, I don't know if I'd understand it any better.

Funny you say that, JJ Abrams said that is exactly what they set out to create. After a trip to Japan they saw how much Godzilla merchandise was there, and how popular it still was, that they wanted America to have its own super monster.
