Ok so here's a problem Ive had for some time but it's beggining to get really irriatiting.

For some reason my display is too dark, nothing really serious that you notice it right away, but when you view pictures or video's sometimes the brightness level is to low to properly see eveyrthing. If i'm just watching a video on Windows Media Player i can ussually just turn up the brightness in my video settings, but anything online (such as Youtube) does not allow this. I've tried changing the settings on the monitor, but it's already at maximum brightness, as far as i can manually do. Anyways to get into the computer settings and change it that way?

On your desktop you should be able to right click and select "properties." This should pull up your display settings, such as resolution, etc. If that doesn't help, it could be an issue with your video card.

This is started to really bug me, The sound on my Windows Media Player won't work. It claims it's playing the track, there's just no sound. I've uninstalled it and re-downloaded it about 5 times and it hasn't done anything.

did you try using other players, like winamp etc? if the sound doesn't work on those either, then you need to download/redownload your codecs. if the sound does work on them, then...um, don't use windows media player?

If it's just media player then it sounds like a codec issue to me.
If it's everything then it would point to some sound card settings.

I'm on my girlfriend's computer for the summer... her internet explorer and Firefox does not allow Quicktime movies to be played on blogs or on buzznet or anything... do any of you have an ideas as to why it would refuse to load?

if she's got a codec problem, then windows media player isn't the only one that won't work; no other programs will work either.

try downloading/redownloading quicktime again. this same problem was happening with me earlier on today, so i downloaded and installed the quicktime standalone version, and the problem went away just like that. http://www.quicktime.com

just a tip: download Quicktime here: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html

otherwise it just comes bundled with iTunes which if you don't need it, you're better off without

What the heck is a codec?
I've been using Real Player. It's just that I can't download files that will only play in Windows Media Player.

codecs are software that you need to play compressed files such as .avis, which i'm guessing is what you're trying to play. if you don't have the proper codec for those, then they won't play in any player, let alone windows media player. go here: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ffds ... e?download
and download and install that, then try to play your file.

I'm definitely going to try that, it's just that it's not playing anything, not just certain files.

I've found another problem with my sound-less computer. It doesn't know when there's a disc in the drive. When I put in an audio CD and open a program like Real Player, or Windows Media Player, it tells me to insert a CD... I did find one program that knew there was a CD in the drive, and it says it's playing, but there's still no sound. I've checked the speakers, I've checked where they plug in, and that all seems to be good. I'm so lost.

Hey guys,

Does anyone know anything about video encoding? I'm trying to get my DVDs into AVI format but I can't find any programs that will actually work (not make the audio or video skip or make the file 200GB) except for things like DivX, which has shitty quality. Can anyone recommend a program that has worked for them and encodes to decent quality?

gracias 8-)

tmpgenc is the only one I've ever used for PC and I know it's still always recommended. I don't really use PCs anymore though so other people will be able to suggest other ones too.

By the way, hi steph!
