on the way home tonight, while playing my tetris applet on my cell phone, I got to thinking about the pieces.
now, I've played hundreds of games of tetris. I used to play on my 386, and then moved on to my NES, then took a break for a while until I found a windows tetris that ran on my p2 and windows 98.
Back then, however, I never really thought structuredly about the various combinations and permutations of pieces.

Now, though, that I play every day on the way to and from school, I think a lot more about efficiency and maintaining longevity in the game.

all this has led to my revelation today. I had always played with the philosphy that I could basically deal with pieces, leaving a big hole in the middle where I could eventually put the 1x4 block whenever it came. emperically you'll find that this isn't a viable strategy. it works maybe 60-70% of the time, which is definitely not good enough.
this play philosophy naturally led me to rely on 1x4 blocks and consider them supremely useful, and disregard their unbelievably problematic nature when you did not need them to fill a huge gap in your tower.

however, now I have come to realize that the mose useful block is of course the T shaped piece, because of its extreme versatility in placement.

also, for the past few weeks I have been playing out various tetris scenarios in my head. it is getting disconcerting.

Open your eyes to nights and days, you close them up and float away
and somehow inbetween you've got to master lying to yourself
you back the cause, get out of school, you get a job, the job gets you
and somehow every day you end up serving somebody else
now if that ain't panic that you're feeling, then you damn well better start
you can drive it into that head of yours with the hammer in your heart.

And it's alriiiiiiiight now, take the world and make it yours again.

I dreamt that I was surfing on a wave made of rainbows and cotton candy. Then my bladder exploded, but it wasn't really my bladder; it was my pet panda. But it's okay, cause my panda respawned and then it went to a party. It got wasted, then it went to play some Counter Strike with George Bush. Damn, George Bush is good at CS.
