Sometimes I wonder about life. Why some people are so ungrateful for everything they have. And why it's a natural inclination to focus on the bad instead of the good. The things you don't have instead of the things you do. What you've lost instead of what you've gained. I don't think it's a personal fault, I think it's a fault of society. It makes me sad that people can't just be happy. Or content. Satisfied. No one ever wants to be happy with life exactly the way it is. There's always something else they'd like to change, or "improve upon". Which is great really, self improvement is fabulous, but when is it enough? When are peoples' lives going to be good enough for themselves?
I read a lovely quote the other day, about happiness...I can't remember exactly how it goes. Something like 'Happiness is not the destination, it's the journey'...or something. But it made me think quite a bit. I mean, on one hand you're thinking, yeah, that's right, what it's saying is to enjoy the journey. But then, and this is pretty much a big question, if happiness is not the ultimate destination, then what is? And I don't mean like after you die, I just mean, like growing up, or living life. If at the end of all that is 'growing up' happiness is not promised to me, what is? It's really hard to explain, but I think this is what I decided:
Happiness really is the journey through life. Whatever it might bring, you just have to be your own happiness. You have to make your choices through life. You have to choose to be happy, you have to choose to be content and you have to choose your own destination. It can't be happiness, because if you make that your goal, you have to realize nothing will ever be good enough. You'll spend the rest of your life, trying to get to something you've already got. If your look forward to happiness your whole life, and consider everything else to be 'not quite there yet' or, just not happy yet, you're going to miss it. The happiest time in your life will pass you by while you tell yourself it isn't true happiness, and that it's just one more thing you endure before you will reach happiness.
I am happy. Most days, haha. I think happiness comes from inside, where as all the bad stuff comes from somewhere else. Every single person has an inate ability to just be happy, but they have to feel it. They just have to find it. I love life. I am content with the way things are right now. I think I could live like this forever.
True, I've got quite a few things I really should improve on. Things I shouldn't do anymore. But I don't consider myself any less happy because of them. I think everything is perfect in it's own way.
