if you're using imageready and saving the gif as an optimized image, you can set the optimized image size to whatever you want, and imageready adjusts your colors accordingly. if you've got a big file that you're trying to shrink to 10kb, though, the optimized image is probably going to get crappier as the colors get lower.

if you're not using imageready, i have no idea, because imageready is the only program that i use for animated gifs
