Music v. Lyrics

In a song which is more imporant to you, music or the lyrics? There is no need to justify your answers, just vote if you want to.

it's impossible for me to say, both in most cases have to at least by moderatly good, and if one is only moderatly good ussually the other has to be excellent.

Take IME the lyrics ussually are very odd, or cryptic. But the shear vocal delivery, and musicianship is amazing. SO i listen to IME for the vocals and Music. (Best Group Of Musician's In The Country...Not Exagerating)

But someone like Matthew Good...well he really hasn't ever done much musically awe inspiring. He can't even read music. He and his band play par, and above par music. But Matthew's lyrics and delivery make the band. Same with OLP, and severalother bands i listen to. (lets face it OLP are nothing special other then Raine's old voice)

Music, because without music, lyrics simply become spoken words. If they're sung, that becomes the music again. Lyrics are simply words on a page designed to accompany the music. There are plenty of instrumentals which have no lyrics, at the other end of the scale theres rap with almost no music and all lyrics. To me rap is simply getting poetry in a rhythm or beat and reciting them in a monotonous tone for 3 minutes or so. but that's just my opinion. I respect the creativity that goes into it. I just don't feel the whole output is particularly great. (but that isn't what this thread was about so please don't hijack it)

That's true. Those things together (especially Sol ... nipple ring :drool:

) create something special. But really, it doesn't compare to some of the other musical talents out there.

I used to be a "omg the lyrics are so meaningful" people. So I know what this debate is all about. But I grew out of that. Lyrics are dependant of the person and reguardless, they are just words.

I find now that if I enjoy the music in general, then I enjoy the song more.

If the lyrics are stupid stupid, then I just want to cringe. But for the most part if the singing flows well with the music and the music is enjoyable then the song is great.

very often i find that i love the song by a million times better AFTER i read/listen to the lyrics.

But then music's kind of the whole point of being in a band and creating songs...
