"The Welland and District Humane Society does not support banning pitt bulls at this time. In light of the province's discussions on the possible Ontario wide ban on the breed on dogs, Coun. Dan Fortier suggested council speak to the local Humane Society on the issue. When contacted by Welland News, Sheryl Nemeth, vice president of the Humane Society said the board of directors has had brief discussions on the matter. "The board of directors discussed it and are not in favor of banning pitt bulls at this time," she explained. "The board will be discussing it further, making a recommendation to council." Locally, the Humane Society has not had a lot of complaints with regards to pitt bulls. "No more then any other breed," Ms. Nemeth added. As well, when the society does have pitt bulls in their care, the dogs are adopted out by their agency."
Now I'm curious what everyone's views are about this. Personally I don't think such a ban should be implemented but I do think that something should be done, I'm just not sure what. Just yesterday in the Toronto Sun there was an article where a lady was out walking her jack russell when 2 pitt bulls came out of nowhere, the little jack russell jumped in front of his owner and the pitt bulls went at him. The lady lifted him up to try and protect him but she said the pitt bulls just lept up and grabbed the dog out of her hands then proceeded to rip the dog to pieces until it was dead. Now during this whole thing a man had pulled over to try and help and they were hitting these dogs with sticks trying to get them to leave this poor dog alone. Now this worries me, you read about things like that all the time happening in Toronto .. not that long ago a little girl was mauled by a pitt bull when out playing. I'm moving to Toronto in a matter of a couple months and I'm terrified at the idea of taking my dog for a walk. There's no way I could handle seeing my dog teared to pieces like that right in front of me. My dog isn't a little dog, he's medium sized but up against a pitt bull my dog wouldn't have a chance.
Thoughts? The dogs shouldn't be banned entirely because there are some very loving and calm pitt bulls but maybe anybody who owns a pitt bull or plans on buying/adopting one should be made to take mandatory obedience classes. Not necessarily for training them, but for socializing them more with other dogs and children etc. I don't know .. I'm just scared for my own dog. I read articles like that in the Toronto papers all the time and I can't imagine what I would do if put in that situation. The lady didn't press charges saying the owner of those 2 dogs probably loves their dogs just as much as she loved her little jack russell.

Just typing in pitt bull under a google search brings up all these articles on attacks ... and before someone asks, this is what a pitt bull looks like:
