Ontario Pitt Bull Ban

Post by Joey »

Welland is my city, just outside of Niagara Falls n' St. Catharines:

"The Welland and District Humane Society does not support banning pitt bulls at this time. In light of the province's discussions on the possible Ontario wide ban on the breed on dogs, Coun. Dan Fortier suggested council speak to the local Humane Society on the issue. When contacted by Welland News, Sheryl Nemeth, vice president of the Humane Society said the board of directors has had brief discussions on the matter. "The board of directors discussed it and are not in favor of banning pitt bulls at this time," she explained. "The board will be discussing it further, making a recommendation to council." Locally, the Humane Society has not had a lot of complaints with regards to pitt bulls. "No more then any other breed," Ms. Nemeth added. As well, when the society does have pitt bulls in their care, the dogs are adopted out by their agency."

Now I'm curious what everyone's views are about this. Personally I don't think such a ban should be implemented but I do think that something should be done, I'm just not sure what. Just yesterday in the Toronto Sun there was an article where a lady was out walking her jack russell when 2 pitt bulls came out of nowhere, the little jack russell jumped in front of his owner and the pitt bulls went at him. The lady lifted him up to try and protect him but she said the pitt bulls just lept up and grabbed the dog out of her hands then proceeded to rip the dog to pieces until it was dead. Now during this whole thing a man had pulled over to try and help and they were hitting these dogs with sticks trying to get them to leave this poor dog alone. Now this worries me, you read about things like that all the time happening in Toronto .. not that long ago a little girl was mauled by a pitt bull when out playing. I'm moving to Toronto in a matter of a couple months and I'm terrified at the idea of taking my dog for a walk. There's no way I could handle seeing my dog teared to pieces like that right in front of me. My dog isn't a little dog, he's medium sized but up against a pitt bull my dog wouldn't have a chance.

Thoughts? The dogs shouldn't be banned entirely because there are some very loving and calm pitt bulls but maybe anybody who owns a pitt bull or plans on buying/adopting one should be made to take mandatory obedience classes. Not necessarily for training them, but for socializing them more with other dogs and children etc. I don't know .. I'm just scared for my own dog. I read articles like that in the Toronto papers all the time and I can't imagine what I would do if put in that situation. The lady didn't press charges saying the owner of those 2 dogs probably loves their dogs just as much as she loved her little jack russell.

:(

Just typing in pitt bull under a google search brings up all these articles on attacks ... and before someone asks, this is what a pitt bull looks like:

I said something needs to be done... They shouldn't be banned but some sort of obedience training or owner education needs to occur. A lot of times these dogs are the result of poor ownership.

Just yesterday actually I had to walk past someone who had a pit bull and he had it on a chain. Not a leash but an actual chain. Frankly I don't see how that could be good for the dog (and I'm not talking about one of those tiny chains you'd use to tie the dog to a pole in your backyard... this was a pretty think chain.

As much as banning them would solve the problem completely I think there may be other solutions.
I can't wait until the day schools are over-funded and the military is forced to hold bake sales to buy planes.

Can't you force pitt bulls to be muzzled when they're out in public so that there's less danger to other people out walking their dogs? I think we have something like that here after a some children got mauled by them a few years ago.
Open your eyes to nights and days, you close them up and float away
and somehow inbetween you've got to master lying to yourself
you back the cause, get out of school, you get a job, the job gets you
and somehow every day you end up serving somebody else
now if that ain't panic that you're feeling, then you damn well better start
you can drive it into that head of yours with the hammer in your heart.

And it's alriiiiiiiight now, take the world and make it yours again.

I say ban em. Let people keep the ones they've got. But I've had an encounter with one and it scared the shit out of me. I'd rather not do it again.

there needs to be some sort of special liscence. and the owners need to be held responsible for problems...... criminally responsible even.

but dont ban them. that's just abusing power

Now, PitBulls are very vicious dogs, and a large part of me wants them banned. But they're usually only vicious because they're in the care of negligent owners. I dont think they should be banned, so long as the owners are carefully selected and visits made to the home to check the conditions of the dog. Its not the breed, its the owners.

No one can muzzle a dog when its warm out. Thats like cruelty to the animal since the dog sweats from its tongue.

As for banning of pitbulls, well I'm not too sure what to say about it but, I believe that the animals over all agressivness comes from its owners. If you have a bad owner, then you get a agressive dog or vice versa. And then theres the fact that all dogs(not just pitbulls) can be aggressive and should be properly secured within the owners property.

I'm terrified at the thought of taking my dog for a walk now :(

Plus it's not necessarily when the owner is out walking their dog that's the problem, so i don't think a muzzle will help .. it's the pitt bulls who get loose and the dogs that are allowed to wander. Like with the story above .. the owner of the 2 pitt bulls that killed the jack russell said his dogs got out without him knowing .. so a muzzle wouldn't have done anything in that situation.

I think it's silly to ban them altogether. Stop breeding them is a good idea, all pitt bull owners should be forced to have their dog fixed maybe .. or at least have someone come into the home to work with socializing them .. that's what the humane society does before releasing them to be adopted. well the one in toronto anyway.

Also for anyone wanting to adopt/buy a pitt bull they should have to go through a special application/screening process to make sure they understand the needs etc for this breed. I think it all comes down to people just being very uneducated .. not to mention the morons who buy pitt bulls to look 'tough'

I'm excited to work with pitt bulls when I do my internship though .. I've never really encountered a pitt bull before so it will definitely be interesting!
