Who are you voting for? (Canada)

Post by I AM ME »

Well who's it going to be? Obviously Doug and Chris won't be voting and will spend the rest of this thread convincing us of the evils of the ballot. But for the rest of you, who's your political lover?

New Democrats all the way, sure you have to lose respect for them for dropping so many of there previous ideals to appeal to a broader audience, but they needed to rejuvinate somehow. Now they stand a chance at making an actual political presence for themselves.

Keep in mind NDP naysayers that basically everything you love that your government gives you is because of the NDP. Ex: Medi-care

well except you Doug, you hate everything about the NDP

I'd vote for Jack Layton, but I'm afraid of Stephen Harper winning. Because he's . And everyone knows Alberta is just Northern Texas. It'd be like having our very own Dubya.

So hello more years of wonderful liberal govt.

Stephen is scary as hell, well not as scary as Stockwell was but still very frightening. I must admit even though i don't agree with most conservitive ideals, Joe Clark was a good man. But now the conservitives have been pushed much farther to the right.

Martin is weak, he's not capable in the spotlight, and seems constantly nervous. Not to mention he's conservitive in liberal clothing

No one was as scary as Stockwell. You have to be pretty damn scary for your own party to start thinking you're scary.

I'd be nervous too if I was Martin... at any moment, more info from the sponsorship scandal could crop up. :P

edit: I was going to comment that everyone's been pushed to the right, not just Tories, but I forgot. Sooo:

Everyone's been pushed to the right, not just Tories. Layton's NDP reminds me of Trudeau's Liberals.

yeah like i was saying NDP are the new Liberals, Martin's Liberals are the New Conservitives. The Conservitives are now a watered down version of the Alliance

Darrel Stinston's going to win my riding no matter what, so it doesn't matter. I hope the NDP win a few more seats than last election, but i doubt it. Please please liberals, don't fuck up!

Are their any provinces other then Manitoba that are NDP? I think we might be the only one right now. The conservitives have a hard time winning anything provincial here because they fucked up pretty bad in the past, and Gary Doer has been so strong leaderwise

i'm cheering for the conservatives.

i dont' have a good reason. if they get elected i'm sure they'll spend my taxes on the army and pass a law that lets them seize the terrahrist material on my computah.

and by the way, don't vote.

Because not voting isn't going to do anything other than give you reason to complain about the government that gets in. I mean, if you vote for the winning party, it'll be harder to bitch about them, right? But if you vote for the party closest to what you believe/want (obviously no party is going to be perfect), you might actually get something better done. And not voting isn't going to accomplish anything.

So, I ask you this:

Why not?

Saskatchewan, actually. Although it's a minority coalition with the Liberals right now.

Our Conservatives were replaced by the Saskatchewan Party because they fucked up so badly during the eighties.

Well. I have lots of reasons why not. First of all, democracy isn't working. People aren't going to the polls, people aren't being represented by individuals they trust. Politics in canada are dominated now more then ever by career politicians who have zero interest in "making changes" or "good government" if such a thing even exists.

i hear a lot about how anarchy would never work. well, democracy doesn't work either.

Secondly, i see and read a lot of people preach tolerance on this board. look at the gay marriage thread. So many arguments are "leave them alone, let them decide, love who they want" etc.

Why not apply that same reasoning to all aspects of life? By voting you are implying that you, or your candidate, know better then i do how i should live my life.

That's irrational.

If I'm wrong, and i could be, somebody has to explain it to me.

Heh, I know that was probably just a bad choice of wording, and not your main point, but, well, it's just funny that that's an argument for not going to the polls.

Anyways...

I can see your moral obligation to not going to the polls, and I agree with you there, but I just think it's rather futile to not vote. Though you're not going to be able to get what you want out of voting, you could at least try to help sway things your way (ie, vote for a party that will resolve some issues you're concerned about). Really, practically, there's no reason to not vote. Defately express your objections to the way the system works, but not voting isn't going to get things done.

And I agree, the government is shit. It seems like at every turn they're doing something that just pisses people off. But honestly, we could be a lot worse off.

Heck, we could have Bush running to take over from Prime Minister Poutine. 8O

bahahahaha

i totally pwned myself with that ironic argument.

i meant it to say that canadians are losing faith in the process.

the thing is, i can't even pick a lesser evil. the conservatives will give me a tax break, but they'll impose ridiculous laws restricting my civil and social rights (ie homosexual marriages and abortions). And harper & co are so twisted about the war on terrah that they'll probably pass a patriot act of their own.

the NDP will raise our already ridiculous corporate taxes. they'll raise personal income taxes. they'll raise all forms of taxes. and they're liable to pass more ridiculous laws like the one that says i can't speak my mind about certain issues (ie homosexuals)

the liberals don't even give a shit anymore. they just basically take their dicks out and slap us in the faces everyday. more scandals. more beauracracy. more politicking. this is by far the most american party. who wants an american party to run canada?

THEY ALL SUCK

i'd rather have the pot party in power. but i'm not going to vote. principles and all.

heh

I really can't blame you for not voting. I think my issue is choosing the lesser of two evils; to vote or not to vote.

Oh well, I can't vote yet anyways.
