Thinking about buying this...

Pretty much equal to the iPod except that it's 100% PC compatable, and has an extremely good battery-life. (not as sweet looking and operating as the iPod, though).
However, this puppy's going to cost me $499.99 at Radio Shack (compared to $449.99 for the iPod there, plus I'd have to buy a USB adapter, since I don't have firewire). I'm really hoping to find somewhere in town where I can get it cheaper than that (I haven't seen it much cheaper online, plus there you get squat in the way of a warranty and service).

To be quite honest with you, Robbo, I don't see how it is worth 500+ dollars just to cart music around with you.
Come on people, it's called a CD player. You're NOT going to listen to all 5 million mp3's in one day.
Seriously.
There are better places to spend that kind of money.
Like... school.

Aww come on, give the guy a break. The ipod/mp3 player is far more handy than a cd player. Instead of lugging all your cds around you can carry then all on one player, plus you can quickly jump from one band to another. Its the beauty of the mp3. Its nice to just be able to switch from artist to artist without changing a cd. In all honesty i think its a great little device for music lovers. But as you said its expensive so if your not moving around much it may not be the smartest idea.

Right now I'm somewhat "loaded", plus my parents are paying for university until I get my BA (after which I'm paying for any further education).
This is completely a luxury thing; there's no "need" for it. My reasons are based pretty much around what my sunglassed buddy said.
I know it's insanely expensive, which is why I'm still "thinking". I'd love to find it cheaper somewhere.
I'd also think about going with the 10gig version, but I can't find it anywhere (online or offline), and it's apparently had some issues that were fixed in the 20gig.

Oh, and ignorant store clerks are frustrating. I've only been researching it thoroughly for a couple of days, and I know more than anyone I talked to. The guy at radioshack said that the only hard drive MP3 players he'd ever heard of were iPod and iRiver. The guy at Futureshop had never heard of iRiver at all.
I mean, these are both stores where the people should know what they're talking about. Radioshack is fairly limited in what they sell, and the Futureshop guys work in limited departments of the store.
Sheesh.
And both of them, of course, tried to tell me to buy an iPod. Which, for the same price once I buy all the required accessories, has the same if not less features, and the risk of PC incompatability.
I also seriously considered the much less expensive 15GB iPod, but again the same issues apply. And once I've spent about $400 on it, I figure that spending an extra hundred or two is worth it to be assured of quality.

Whenever death may surprise us,
let it be welcome
if our battle cry has reached even one receptive ear
and another hand reaches out to take up our arms.
Nobody's gonna miss me, no tears will fall, no ones gonna weap, when i hit that road.
my boots are broken my brain is sore, fer keepin' up with thier little world, i got a heavy load.
gonna leave 'em all just like before, i'm big city bound, your always 17 in your hometown

"When looking up there, I just felt whole, like I belonged. Like one day I too would shine my most brilliant. Sitting there also made me think about sitting through services at my little country church back home. About that never-changing congregation of the same sixty-seven people and everyone has known you since before you were born. Now, out here in the real world, everything just seemed more vivid than when I used to sit in that little pew. That pew that was now so, so far away from where I was. I feared I had somehow left God behind there, too. I feared he was somehow just sitting there, saving my seat on the fifth pew from the front row, just waiting on me to come back. I left so quickly, I worried that he may not have noticed I was gone. And, now, I’m just too far away to find. So he’s just sitting there, patiently waiting on me to come back. I closed my eyes and prayed a moment. I hoped more than anything that he could still hear me." -an excerpt from my novella, A Sea of Fallen Leaves.
