Anyone depressed about the sorry state of Rock?

Post by I AM ME »

It's pretty sad. It's a time where yor forced to play by the record company rules, and conform to a more bland comercial taste. OR You'll be un-sucessful, dropped and largely ignored.

Oh and the new "Punk" revolution is non-existant as a real Punk, or Rock Revolution, its just a Pop fad with spiky hair and a skate board.

Or the good bands will stick to independant labels, and the people inclined to listen to good music will find them, then there will be a large buzz around the band, then they will blow up in England, then make it big here. It happens more than you think.

Anyways, why do we need to go to concerts and have to cope with little shitheads kicking their way up to the front? If my favorite bands stay independant, then I am not going to shed a tear. I don't want to put up with those drunk frat boys telling the lead singer to take his shirt off and the little girls with their blood curdling shrieks and their lack of pubic hair, thank you very much. They can keep listening to Dave Matthews for all I care.

Oh whoopie. Here comes the whole punk discussion. Let's face it, there are hardly any true punk bands around now. We have Propaghandi, Crass, and Anti-Flag, and AF is trying to sell out fast with their radio songs and bullshit.

And here's another thing. Maybe it's people like you that make any band that has fast guitars and guys with short hair classified as a punk band. I don't see Alkaline Trio labeling themselves as a punk band, but lots of people call them one, and people like you try to pick the band apart for a label you gave them. Wow, just because you have the craptastic bands like Good Charlotte and Sum 41 out there calling themselves punk doesn't mean that every band that uses power chords think they're punk. So just don't mention the word "punk" ever again, because you call bands that, then turn around and bitch how they aren't.
I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging. But I heard my own breath and had to face that I'm still living. I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings. I'm not dead... My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant. There's no end.

um... he put the word "punk" in quotation marks... meaning that it's not his personal label for the music he's referring to. in fact... he discredits this inappropriate use of the label... so i don't think he's the one bringing down the walls of the universe. sorry.

who cares? If you like the music, listen to it, if you don't like it then don't listen to it. Simple.

unfortunately, there will always be a "sorry" state of rock if you adhere unbendingly to ideals of what music should be. there will always be music patrons of varying opinions and there is no form of music less valid than another if there is someone capable of rationalizing the techniques and theories involved therein (which there always will be). this, of course, excludes blatantly stealing things from other artists, since it was never originally their creation to begin with *cough*vanillaice*cough*.

Idealist basically summed up what i was going to say to Alan. As for the fact that there's still good music on indeprendent labels i agree with you, but it's depressing to see old great bands falling apart. And it's sad to see no label support for any art. I've watched more then a few of my favorite bands fade away recently, or else they're doen something much worse then fade away, they've pulled a OLP. It's depressing because lots of these bands were at one time popular and exhalted, now they don't get the money they deserve. I agree that i wouldn't want my favorite bands blowing up and becoming the next big thing like nickelback, but i also don't want to see my favorite bands have to call it quits because of lack of funds. Many of my favorite bands can't even afford to replace instruments or get need gear fixed, or even tour in some cases

To be honest, I dont see rock in a sorry state right now. Every band can't make it big, and labels pick up the ones they are betting on. This is always going to happen and always will. If you don't want to take what they give you on a silver platter like most radio stations, then don't. I haven't met someone that couldn't find music that suited their personality, and why shouldn't they? I have seen Indy music become more and more excessable in the past few years and its created a scene of its own. There are always going to be stupid trends that you don't like and thats fine. But the people that like the stupid trends probably don't like what you listen to either.

no. it's some of you people that think this that make me depressed. there is so much amazing music out there and there are so many amazing people struggling to make sure it stays that way. it's so inspirational and overwhelming. it's there. you just have to listen for it.

...and that is life according to Darwin. I'm surprised more independant bands aren't utilizing the internet for the revolutionary marketing tool that it is. Unfortunately, in this situation, one is faced with reality. If you want to get paid for making music, you have to be heard. This always involves some kind of sacrifice, and if you aren't willing to sacrifice your integrity, you are then forced to use your intuition to come up with a creative way of getting your material to the masses. Some people are simply better at this than others.

It's funny. This conversation I had might interest a few of you people, mostly Stephanie.

My friend Paul and I were talking to random people about music, and the topic of Elton John came up. We were talking about how once Elton John and Billy Joel die, there's no one to carry the piano rock scene. I said Tori Amos and Ben Folds, but think about it, they just aren't popular enough. Amos is probably one of the most under-rated musicians of our time, because there's so many times she should have blown up and been the next person to carry the genre. John and Joel are bound to die anytime now, and once they do, an amazing scene just dies off. It's rather sad, if you take the time to think of it.
