Neil (and fiance) saves a life!
Neil (and fiance) saves a life!
I'd like to tell you about the newest member of me and my fiance's family. Her name is Emma (named after Rachel 'n Ross's baby on Friends) and I'd like to tell you all how she came into our lives.
Monday night (the 27th) Jamie and I had gotten home late that night from hanging out with our best friend (the one who is hosting our halloween party). It was around 1 in the morning.
Every day, we make sure we take our dog (Lexi) for 2 walks - one during the day and one at night.
Sooo....we got home and of course took her for her "night walk". We typically just take her for a several block walk around our neighborhood, and almost typically wind up crossing this bridge only two blocks away, that guides traffic over the Canisteo River.
Upon approching the bridge, on now Tuesday morning, below we hear a HORRIBLE cry coming from a cat.
I'm telling you, I have NEVER heard a cat cry as loud as this one. I've done volunteer work at a Humaine Society 'n stuff and still have never heard such a horrible cry of fear from a cat.
My fiance took our dog home.....and I decided I was going to decend down upon the river side, where it sounded like the cat was crying from. Making my way down beside the river, and below the bridge, I was softly saying "here kitty, kitty, kitty" and then after saying it several times, this freaking ADORABLE little KITTEN ran to me, no longer crying.
She was purring from the second she let me pick her up. Of course, instantly falling for her, I lead her back above the bridge where i met my fiance, and we decided to take her home for the nite - give her warmth and some food.
She, the kitten, loved all of it, naturally.
When the kitten was making her way up our apartment steps, I noticed her favoring her front/right paw. I didn't think a whole lot of it, other than I thought it was sore.
THEN, I noticed, her paw was appx. 3 times the size a normal paw......like the other 3.
The next morning, I had made arrangements for the Humaine Society to take her. But something throughout the morning, and through my one class Tuesday morning, made me consider not wanting her to leave.
I got home.....and told my fiance I don't want her to leave......or at least my biggest fear was that the Humaine Society wouldn't give her all of the proper care for her paw.
We decided to take her to our Vet, and get her examined.
Upon arriving, the lab assistant made it perfectly aware to me what happened to her paw: some completely INHUMAINE STUPID ASS MOTHER FUCKER thought it would be priceless to tie 2 rubber bands to her paw, cutting off the circulation............which would eventually have led it to either:
A: freeze off from the approaching cold temperatures at night
B: she'd eventually just naw the sucker off
I cried, I literally stood over her, in the lab, and cried because I felt so horrible for her. I know there are HORRIBLE FUCKING people in this world, but I've never seen this shit first hand.
90.00 later - the kitten, Emma, is ours. We got her ALL of her first shots (rabies, wormed, flea dropped, and feline leukemia) along with treatment and medication for her paw.
Turns out, she won't lose the paw.....it won't have to be amputated or anything, but we simply need to help Emma out.
So now - along with her medication that she has to take twice a day, we're also doing an Epsom Salt treatment 3 times a day for her, to help get the circulation back into her foot.
So now, Wednesday, I have arrived home from classes and after being with her for a bit, I have realized that the swelling on her foot HAS in fact decresed, and she's even using it more today. The doctor said it could take up to 3 weeks to REALLY tell, but partially I'm telling already.
She's a gorgeous, domestic shorthair, ALL gray, girl.........and honestly I'm thankful we walked near that bridge last nite.
Ironic enough, while in the vet, this elderly lady was in there with her dog. She kept telling me how gorgeous my kitten was, so i told her the story about how we rescued her. Funnily enough, she lives in THE house RIGHT next to the bridge, and she said she's heard Emma crying off 'n on for 3 days, especially at night like how we found her.
She told me that we're saviors.......honestly, I feel so too. I hope to get pictures of her shortly so you all can see her, but I wanted to share this experience.
Honestly, if any of you out there every purposely harm a domestic animal, I definitely hope you get what you deserve in the end. I'm already working on a letter to the editor......and I plan on talking to somebody at the mayor's office later this week to discuss my experience, and if theres ANYthing we can do. Homeless animals are a HUGE issue in my area of NY, and I want something to get done.

Thank you......I love this kitten. In fact, my computer room has become her home for the time being. I dont' feel she's totally ready to be fully introduced to my dog and other 2 cats quite yet. Especially since once my dog is comfy, she LOVES to play with the cats and I don't think Emma is ready for that yet.
She's chillin 'n purrin on my lap right now.....

oh wow. Thats pretty amazing.
There are some pretty sick people when it comes down to animal cruelty, which is why its so nice to hear of good people like you who really do something about it.

Goodbye you liar,
Well you sipped from the cup but you don't own up to anything
Then you think you will inspire
Take apart your head
(and I wish I could inspire)
Take apart your demons, then you add it to the list.

Its SERIOUSLY like - why in the freaking FUCK harm this kitten by tying rubber bands to her freaking paw!?!?
She's 3 months old.......and i chose her b-day as July 8th, 2003 hehe.
Other than the paw though - she's perfectly healthy so.........I am sooo proud of her for carrrying on because even though her paw is FAR from 100%, she carries on like it doesn't even bother her.
Thanks all........it makes me feel good getting praised for this. Going into Monday night I never had any intentions (of course) of this happening, but I'm now glad that it did.

YAY!! That's so great. I'm a HUGE animal lover and think it's great for what you did. I'd love to save and keep a cat, but i'm allergic, so I have to give them to the humaine society or something like that, but always feel bad cuz i know that most of the animals won't find a good home. They'll just be mistreated again. Ugh.. people like that make me sick. IT's an animal. Love it or don't get it. sheesh.

Awww, thats so great! You should feel soooo good right now saving that cat!I can't believe anyone would do that to such a harmless animal! I love cats sooooo much. I have a cat named Matilda. We adopted her from the human society when she was 9 months old. She had been abandoned and was starving to death before the Humane Society picked her up. She's such an affection loving cat.....I LOVE HER. But ya I just don't understand how ppl can be so cruel to animals

exactly why I want to get into the animal rescue field ...
i've heard about this happening before .. a child had wrapped a rubber band around the kittens paw and then forgot about it .. this kitten had to have her paw amputated though .. she was only a few weeks old so they figured she wouldn't ever realize she lost a paw .. but still ..
Yay for caring people who like animals

Wow... that was just beautiful... congratulations, Neil. I don't know what else to say; everyone else has already said it.
