Y Chromosome repairs own defects

Post by mosaik »

http://abcnews.go.com/wire/US/ap20030618_1120.html

ABC News wrote:Broken genes tend to erode away over eons. But because most chromosomes are inherited in pairs, with one coming from Mom and the other from Dad, they can swap corresponding pieces of themselves, enabling the species as a whole get rid of damaged genes.

But the Y chromosome comes by itself. It cannot trade appreciable amounts of DNA with its partner, the X chromosome, so it cannot get rid of damaged genes that way. That has led some scientists to regard it as a "rotting chromosome" that might disappear millions of years from now.

The new work found that the Y chromosome follows a do-it-yourself strategy: It carries backup copies of important genes, and it uses one copy to fix flaws in the other.

Just like life. The female gene goes to it's partner when something is broken, the male gene fixes it on it's own.

i would just like to point out that this research in fact illustrates that men are not going to become extinct and we are not genetically inferior.

Um... sure...

I'm studying for a biology exam right now. I'm actually in the genes unit at this moment. I'm going to forget I ever read this. It will just confuse me.

maybe we should write articles bitching about how much girls suck because guys have better genes, and how we are completely superior as a group.

Yeah, we could write those articles, but we'd have all these groups bothering the hell out of us, and still claming we're inferior in every way, so really, it would be more of a problem than a solution.
I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging. But I heard my own breath and had to face that I'm still living. I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings. I'm not dead... My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant. There's no end.

Notice that the female gene is smart, it doesn't go to the male gene, because it knows nothing will ever get fixed. instead, it goes to another female gene

You people do realize that neither is male or female... It's the pairing of the two that makes one male or female.

Yep. My Anthropology prof used to say that being a guy is a sex-linked disease - if you get stuck with one of those useless Y-chromosomes, you get horrible deformities like penii and vestigial nipples!

I always wondered what she had against men....

a long time ago (about five years) I asked my mom why did guys have nipples since they can't produce milk. I expected a more interesting answer.

The answer is: guys COULD produce milk, but the hormones required for milk production would make them impotent. Guess which choice evolution favored?
