If one has a crush on an older person that he or she sees every day, but the object of their affection is unaware of their existence, what should one do?
Should one risk embarrassment, self-hatred, and so forth by saying or doing something, or should he or she just continue to be a painfully shy wallflower? If one is to act on his or her affections, how would you recommend he or she do so?

just hide it. then you can't get hurt. that's what i've learned and that's become my philosophy. by the way, it's gotten me nowhere.

Take a risk .. you'll never get anywhere if you don't just jump in there sometimes ..

Yes, but you are talking to someone completely inept in communicating with the male species. I went to an all-girls school, and I have no idea of how to talk to guys - about ANYTHING, let alone... risky... things,

yeah
tell her to pick out a cd and when she's going through your collection, stand really close behind her
then when she stands up and turns around and discovers that you are right there, you just kiss her

I tend to get along better with guys than I do with girls .. but on a friendship level .. when it comes to dating I'm chicken shit too .. there's this hot guy at work who actually came up to me and made the effort of introducing himself to me but I'm too scared to talk to him

males...they're easy to talk to. what you/your friend can do is send a person to tell them hey...this chick...she wants you. then after about a day or two of that...you personally walk up and tell them how you feel. it tends to slowly make you feel comfortable about him knowing that you want to secretly rip his clothes off and rape him.
