Debate - Which is "poppier"? Life or Innocent?

Post by nelison »

ok we all complained (well some of us did) that Innocent was too poppish, but I've always wondered why we never considered Life as a pop song? I think the two are extremely similar and was just wondering what everyone thought about this...

life is a pop song
we are the brand new beatniks. we are the down and outers.
we are the bleeding hearts, beating syncopated, broken rhythm.
our speed is often break neck. we need to slow it down.
tired of being sleepless. tired of being broken.

It depends on each individual's definition of "pop"...

Personally, I don't think either of them are extremely pop-like. Innocent has a rock-ish feel to it, and Life is sort of artistic.

The popishness comes from the fact that both songs are upbeat, both in message and melody.

What does it matter whether a song is "poppy"?? By your definition, it becomes detrimental to a song depending on how close it sounds to "popular music". Who CARES?!? If your judging whether the song is good or not, "poppiness" has NO place in the discussion. Hey, just because a song is popular and "mainstream" doesnt mean its bad! Heck, there are a lot of good pop tunes out there. But confusing whether something is "pop" or not with whether something is good or bad... I am SICK OF. So next time you or anyone come up with a thread like this, GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT.

I swear to GOD. If you people make me start another debate on Objectivity vs. Subjectivity, I will be VERY cranky about it. So stop it.

In order to preserve my sanity, let's restart this debate, with the following question:
Life and Innocent are, on the surface, similar songs. Both are about dealing with the hard parts of life, and realizing that there's hope. But, for some reason, Innocent isn't as popular, on this board in particular. Why?
You can't go around building a better world for people. Only people can build a better world for people. Otherwise it's just a cage.

I dont think that those songs are poppish. The closest one to being poppish is Innocent. Life has deep meaning, which is why it is my favorite song to listen when Im down. What is Innocent about anyways?

I like Life more than innocent simply because it seems more artsy and because it comes from spiritual machines.. my favorite OLP album to date.

because the music (except for the intro/first verse) is absolutely awful. AWFUL.

the chorus has NOTHING to do with the verses.

the chorus is bad.

i hate the litte kids singing.

the verses are weak as well.

Innocent is too straight forward. And the kiddy chorus doesn't help any. The song could have a good concept to it, if he had put deeper meaning into it.

listening to the instrumentals in life is like having sex.

listening to the instrumentals in innocent is like sticking your penis in a meat grinder.

Bring Back the Sun is the only redeeming song on Gravity.

Too much rock, too little art, but that's already been said, in this thread, even.

It's fun to rip apart Gravity, because it pisses off all the people who are so terrified to admit that Our Lady Peace has fallen from grace. Face it, you know? Our Lady Peace, in their current incarnation, sucks.

Perhaps it's only because they were one of the best bands anywhere, just a year and a half ago.
