"Doesn't anybody ever know" speaks for itself

"The world's a subway"... Well, think of what a subway's like. Dirty, smelly, dark, smelly, rat-filled, smelly, etc. So, that's what the world is; dirty, smelly, dark, smelly, rat-filled and smelly. It works well with the theme of the song, which is pretty much "The world sucks. It sucks to be a kid in this world. You're just an ordinary kid, and then all of your hopes and dreams are ripped out from under you" (ie, Superman being dead).

You're welcome.

And the word "smelly" has just temporarily lost all meaning to me.

long ,dark, full of bustling ppl..... so many things you can find in that metaphor
"How can we justify spending so much on destruction and so little on life?" Matthew Good

"The white dove is gone, the one world has come down hard, so why not share the pain of our problems, when all around are wrong ways, when all around is hurt, i'll roll up in an odd shape and wait, untill the tide has turned.....with anger, i'm dead weight, i'm anchored"- IME, God Rocket (Into the Heart of Las Vegas) ^ Some say this song is about a terrorists thoughts before 911

"Pray for the sheep" Matt Good
"But it's alright, take the world and make it yours again" Matt Good

I felt it in the wind, and i saw it in the sky, i thought it was the end, i thought it was the 4th of July.

I also see it as being a system of transportation that takes people to destinations within the city limits. 8-)

The subway makes me think how faceless we all are. That we are alone and isolated when surrounded by so many people. Raine said its the song is about society's degradation, and that in small towns everyone says hello......but in the city its like "why the fuck are you looking at me".......I guess I see it in a more social context.

I disagree about the "dirty" interpretation.

I believe that it means we live in a fast paced world. Always trying to get somewhere as fast as we can. Taking on several tasks, everybody is go go go. No one sits back and reflects anymore. Society has brought us to a point where we must accomplish more and more in less and less time.

I agree with Corey actually. Its closer to what I think........it partly has to do with making time for each other, but the subway is just fast paced and that is a refection of our western ways. The dirty subway does in fact hold true with degrading social values though. Anyways, it is a cryptic metaphor so you can make pretty much anything work if you think about it long enough. Actually, I agree with the "Emily eats poo" theory. I mean, deep down, isn't that what all OLP songs are about?

jesus, have you been on a subway recently? they CAN be fast but usually they sit at a station for like 7 minutes. it's annoying as hell.

lol just had to say that.
