pirating - good or bad?

I personally think that pirating is bad to a certain extent. I think downloading songs is great- it exposes you to a wider range of artists at the touch of a button. I also think that burning mixed CDs is okay, whether it's to listen to in a car, set a certain mood, or just test out some new-found artists.

HOWEVER. I am strongly against people burning entire albums instead of going out and buying them. This is stealing and ripping off the artists. Not just the rich guys, but the little guys too. If everyone burns CDs and never pays from them, what's going to happen to the music industry?

I only see pirating as evil when you make money off the albums you sell.

I have a CD burner (it may not be working right now, but I have one) and I've burned some CDs. Mainly just mix CDs, but some whole CDs too(Chantal's Color Moving and Still, for example).

Still, I usually go out and buy the CD anyways, because I want to have it for myself...And have the original copy.

I have a burned copy of Radiohead's Amnesiac, but the cover is ugly because it's been burned, and there's some other stuff on there that isn't Radiohead...

So, thassall I gotta say.

There are many different ways to look at pirating and many different types of pirating. In the spectrum of pirating there is:
Occasional mp3 downloader
Uses CDR for music primarily
Uses CDR for software
Sells music/software
Has pirating business and makes major dollares off of pirating

Now we must look at how greedy the record companies are at charging us 15 to 20 bucks (US) for a cd when it costs so little to make and the artists get crap from that . . . it all goes in there pocket. So I see making your own music cds as okay, but if it is like OLP or local/independent, they need all the money they can get, you gotta get the actual album. Now software . . . well anything microsoft is immediately extremely overpriced and most likely a poor program so pirating software from them . . . ehh, why not, but independent programs and companies that don't make it without product purchase, you gotta help them out. Now we get into a whole other can of worms when someone starts selling the stuff. Personal use . . . hey that's great, not hurting anyone or affecting anyone but yourself. But selling, that's making a profit at someone else's expense, that's a bugger right there for ya. So there is where I stand.

I agree that pirating is bad to a certain extent. But I mainly use songs that I own and I don't sell them.

And I would never download a whole album. That would take too much time, crappy 56k modem, but I also think it's wrong towards to the artists. Besides I think owning the actual album makes it something special

Downloading should only be used for special songs (rarities, covers, etc) and to discover new artists.

yes. pirating is bad. make mix cds, and be sure to buy some real cds... like COLDPLAY for instance (hint, hint)

yeah, and pirating with software shouldnt be allowed because... just because.
sadly enough, i feel bad for these companies who try so hard and then get ripped off

if people get attached to a band through downloading their songs, they will buy their CD. i think artists should be thankful for kazaa and stuff like that. its probably the #1 way their music is heard.
sometimes if a band only comes out with one good song out of 12, its their own fault that ppl wont buy the full 12 songs i mean geeeeez...

I agree. Without internet downloading, new band exposure would be VERY limited. I know for a lot of people, downloading does hurt the industry because some people I know simply do not buy CDs. Myself, on the other hand, always buy CDs that are worth buying... and I usually determine worth by downloading it first.

i don't think its evil because most of the time i'll pirate something if i don't wanna buy it or if i only know like one song off the album. Usually in time i'll buy the actual album anyway... and right now... i'll prolly end up buying the Three Days Grace album...
