So, tell me about the wonderous city of Regina. Is it a nice place to live? Are there nice places to live near the U of R? Tell me!

Well unless you're Johnny's distance away, let me just try to discourage those people. For Johnny, he has a good option of education in Regina. For the rest of you... there's really no reason to come here. Hell there's no reason for the prairies to support life whatsoever!
To get back on topic, though...
Regina is by no means a bad place to live. Hell, they're even trying to revitalize the hood.
There are ok places to live by the University. There's a ton of apartments just across from it...they're not the nicest thing ever, but if you just want somewhere to live, not make home, they're fine. The rent is a bit pricey over there, though. However, you're from Alberta, so it might seem like nothing to you. And we actually have vacancies!
The res on the campus isn't bad at all, either. There's a few different ones, depending on whether you join up with a federated college (two of the are religious - Campion and Luther...but they're nice places, and you get much more personal support than through the UofR - ask me about those if you want more info). The UofR res is brand new, and the Luther one has the greatest cafeteria everrrrr.
There's other areas nearish the uni - Cathedral is by far the nicest and most unique. Rent is also generally cheaper there, and the buildings nicer with more character. It's about a 5-10 minute drive, depending on the nimrods driving in front of you.
Don't live anywhere that requires you to take the ring road to the university. You will hate it after the first week. It's the worst engineered road EVER and people constantly slide off of it into the ditch. And it takes surprisingly long to get to one end of the city to the other on it.
That being said, you can get anywhere in Regina in 20 minutes or less. Except anywhere in the east end. That's another story. It takes 20 minutes to get from the end of the east end to downtown. That area is major retail, mixed with massive amounts of semis coming in off the highway - not a good combo.
I got sidetracked. But it's nice to be able to get places so quickly.
If you don't have a car...I have no idea what our transit system is like. I'm scared of the cabbies, though.
Be prepared for the coldest winters known to man. Everything else is absolutely wonderful. We get very nice weather in spring/summer/fall. You're not too far removed from Sask, so you have an idea of what that would be like.
There is actually lots of stuff to do, if you have friends willing to do it! We have a whopping three movie theatres! There's a number of bars, if you like that...Tons of pubs if you prefer that! Most pubs have free music or some sort of entertainment most nights.
I could ramble for a long time. Any more questions? I can answer pretty much anything about the university...I've been there for 5 flipping years, so I know the place inside out.

yeah, but it's hard to judge those statistics because it all has to do with per capita, population, income levels and cultural influxes.
In Regina's case, the aboriginal population is very high, especially for Saskatchewan's tiny overall population compared to other provinces and the majority of the crime rate statistics revolve around those areas/communities of the city.

i hate those statistics. they are so insanely skewed. sure, we may have had 5 murders in one year...but somewhere else with a larger population may have had 293 murders, but still has a lower murder rate than us. it's all based on per capita and so forth, as lando stated.
i've honestly encountered very little crime in regina. it's true that it is definitely centered in one area, though. if you know where to avoid, and don't do stupid stuff like leaving expensive stuff sitting in your car, you're fine. i even have family living in north central, where crime is the worst in regina...and they have never been affected in the 80 some years they've lived there.
at least we don't have the need to put signs in our cars that say 'this car is empty' like they do in edmonton!
that was weird. made me feel really safe when i was there...

i'm paying $425 for a one bedroom. but i'm a bit of an anomaly it seems...i've been in the same building for three years, and my rent has never ever gone up.
as long as you stay away from Boardwalk apartments (i think you have this company in alberta too...they're a major rip off...) rent is generally reasonable. for a bachelor suite, it's generally between 400-500. one bedrooms have been ranging from 450-550, from when i last looked. i just checked out househunting.ca (it links up to our classified ads) and there's actually fairly decent prices, depending on area and how many bedrooms/amenities you want.
you could rent a house for 1100 a month here. it's not insane.

to us in regina, housing prices are insane.
compared to everywhere else...they aren't.
we've always had low housing and rent prices. they went up drastically in the past little bit, but the housing bubble finally burst and things are evening out again.
so regina's relatively cheap to live. and you can actually find vacancies and jobs, which is a plus!
