Our resident movie buff recommended this movie to me when I got my new tv. So today I watched it for the first time and was absolutely blown away by it. The plot is simple: The sun is dying and a group of astronauts are sent on a mission to re-ignite it and thus, save all life.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU ALL GO AND RENT/BUY THIS MOVIE BECAUSE IT FREAKING ROCKS!!

It's set like 50 or so years into the future. I was pleasantly surprised by it.

It's sci-fi. Space ships flying around in space in shows like Firefly aren't exactly realistic either, but that doesn't mean it's not one of the best TV series ever made.

Nope, it was meh. It was predictable and a little cheezy. It was good... and I would watch it again. But it's not like it's the dark knight we are talking about here.
I mean.. it's better than average... but I don't think it's as great as you guys are hyping it, here.

Movies don't have to be based on real world facts in order to be good. Movies are just another medium to tell a story.

That's funny stuff right there.

Anyway, yeah there's suspension of belief, but that only works when you're in a different universe of sorts. Like, Star Trek's way in the future and super far away, and who knows what other creatures are out there. Or like, LOTR, that's a completely different world. But with something set only in the next 50 years, and in our solar system, with our real sun that burns WAY WAY hotter than ANYTHING man could create, that's just not believable to me. *shrugs*

um, the star trek universe starts around the year 2150... so only a hundred years after the storyline of sunshine which doesn't have aliens or teleporters or any of that really over the top sci-fi stuff... Take for example the Terminator movies, the future with the lasers and the advanced robots being sent BACK through time starts in the year 2029... something tells me that while they may have some decent robots by that year, I don't think we're going to conquer time travel by then!

OK, I guess the difference is that stuff seems slightly feasible to happen ever (ok, not all of it, but the entire universe in them has a different "feel" to our own).

I just can't wrap my head around "reigniting the sun", no matter HOW far into the future it is!!

half the fun of them is the fact that they involve unbelievable stuff!

so uh...how about that sisterhood of the travelling pants? that's believable...magic pants that fit all different body types? or any kid's animated movie. wall-e wasn't believable whatsoever. really? garbage machines with hearts that repopuplate the world? or talking animals! or half the romantic comedies out there...

movies are unbelievable. that's the point of them! i really don't feel like watching something that happens in my daily life. oh look, girl goes to school. then goes to work. then comes home, sees her boyfriend, then goes to bed to repeat the cycle. fun. not. movies are meant to entertain, and to do so, that involves unbelievable things.

so if you can't wrap your mind around reigniting the sun...can you wrap it around ANY movie with ANY unbelievable plot point? movies require imagination.
