or rent it as soon as it's out.
one of the funniest, most touching movies I've seen in a long time. very different. very good. very very good.
Little Miss Sunshine
from the 'last movie youve watched' thread...
anyway, while i thought Little Miss Sunshine was excellent in some parts, some other parts seemed a bit contrived. in my opinion it treaded more or less "typical indie film" waters. it was pretty funny though. my favourite character is uhh whatshisname... olive's nihilistic older brother. also her grandpa.
i agree with rob. go watch it now!

This is the Royal Tenenbaums on a lesser scale people. I liked the movie quite a bit when I first saw it, then after a while, I started to notice that it is just a ploy to walk into Wes Anderson waters and take a family, have them go through a lot of tough times, and make a comedy out of it. The one problem with that is there was no real sophistication in the humor, it was pining for the show stopping moment the entire time, it seemed. The intelligence needed to enjoy the Royal Tenenbaums is what makes that movie a classic, and this one just pretty damn good.
I am done shitting on the thread now. Please resume.

I definitely thought Little Miss Sunshine was going to be better than it really turned out to be... I don't know, maybe it was the hype/praise. I enjoyed it when I first saw it too but the brilliance kind of faded as I thought about it more and more..
I've only watched Life Aquatic (out of W. Anderson's other films). I want to watch the Royal Tenenbaums.

I enjoyed it for what it's worth. Honestly, I'm a huge Wes Anderson fan, but Tenenbaums just wasn't great for me. It was so... overhyped too, the actors also seem a lot more disconnected from their characters than in his other films. It's a good film in ways, and although I can see certain associations between the two films, The Royal Tenenbaums just doesn't deserve a pedestal when compared to Mr. Anderson's other films. I've seen The Royal Tenenbaums quite a few times too, but right now I'd have to say that I prefer Little Miss Sunshine. It's not that it's superior... just that Tenenbaums is inferior compared to Wes Anderson's other films.
However, it's tough to say whether or not Little Miss Sunshine directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, or even more importantly if writer Michael Arndt will do anything else worthwhile or if any of them will do anything that will stand out above the typical indie film.
That's where Wes has them beat, he's writing and directing great films on his own, with the creators of LMS you never know if any of them will go anywhere or who's really responsible for making it a good film.
