The following is to all Our Lady Peace fans!
Hi everyone, some of you may know me, and some of you may not. I have met a fair few of you, I haven't met everyone. My name is Paul Osatczuk and I'm a second year film student at Humber College in Toronto, Ontario.
Why am I writing this and how is it Our Lady Peace related? Well I'm currently developing a documentary with a crew of six. It's a big project, and the documentary is called: Pathways. What it is about is helping children from low income families and children in rough neighbourhoods with tough lives stay on track with their educaton, graduate from secondary school and help them stay focused and advance in their education and future careers.
Here is where Our Lady Peace comes in. I would love very much so to use one of their songs in our video - but to do that I need to get permission from the band, and their music rights lawyers - it could cost, but hopefully if the band gets wind of this or the company sees it's for a good cause, I can get the music for free.
I would love anyone who has any contact information for me of people who work in the managment side with the band, and with the band personally as well, someone in Sony - if you could give me anything, I would appreciate it.
You can PM me, or e-mail me at ourladypeaceguy@gmail.com or add me to MSN with the same e-mail.
Matt, Josh, Nikki, anyone who would be knowing of such information and could help me out, I'd much appreciate it.
Thank you everyone.

Well you could try contacting Coalition, they have an email form here as well as a mailing address:
http://www.coalitionent.com/
You'll probably need permission from Sony though, to use a commercially released track or whatever. Perhaps Coalition can tell you who at Sony you would need to speak with.
You could also try sending a message to OLP, Raine, or Jeremy's myspace. I'm sure Jeremy runs his himself... OLP and Raine probably have other people in charge of their Myspace accounts but I'm sure the message would get to them.

I've been told that talking to their management is the best way to get something to the band.

Goodbye you liar,
Well you sipped from the cup but you don't own up to anything
Then you think you will inspire
Take apart your head
(and I wish I could inspire)
Take apart your demons, then you add it to the list.

Okay so I've sent a nice e-mail to Jeremy, Raine and Our Lady Peace via myspace. The next step is to get contact information for the right people to talk to at Sony - I can't remember her name right now, but who is the girl that hangs around the hub, comes here and she knows the band/works for them? I forgot her name but she gives nice heads ups and ran the old .net I think.

Raine's is 100% Raine, and OLP's is run by Coalition.

Raine on Myspace is sort of like finding out that Eminem likes to bake. It just seems weird.

Raine's myspace blogs are terrible to read. he's much better off writing lyrics/music.
raine's myspace wrote:i know this girl as pretty as can be sign of aquarius born on the 18th UFO's ,snakes and spiders give her the creeps she's got a half life a half smile and lives in semi-luxury, questions God ,Drugs and Bullets and the high school beauty queen she's courageous but scared to death but that's what courage means she's looking for some courage she feels faithless she feels earthless she wants to run she's struggling for purpose i tell her hang in because you're worth it you've just begun

Stace? She's pretty much out of the picture for some reason but I dunno why.

Hope that helps.
True, but there are a few things to determine what's fair use, and if a work is unpublished (such as this artwork I suppose might currently be considered), it's less likely to fall under fair use.

True, but if you're a student of some sort you can pretty much get away with anything like that. ;-) Unless you are selling it...in which case permission would definitely need to be attained.
In fact, you're kind of promoting the music in a way when you feature it in something like that which kind of almost makes it a good thing. I don't know if I would use a whole song though either. There are rules about that kind of stuff too, but you can get around that by doing some mixing and changing the cue points.

Oh wait my bad, I temporarily thought I was in the thread about the album art for the greatest hits... but yeah, fair use exists and may apply. I dunno what Canadian fair use laws are like.
As a student in film school, they may want you to go through the process of obtaining permission just because it seems like something you'd want to have experience with later on. It certainly couldn't hurt to go through the process and get explicit permission.

Yeah, I for sure need rights permission as this is a project that will be trying to make it to TV and film festivals. I got a reply by Raine's my space, he said it was him in the e-mail, but I don't know - would it be?
He gave me a number to call and said it would be best not to use a single.

Cool! It was probably him, Kathy said that Raine's myspace is him entirely.

I thought they might be lyrics... it seemed like a very strange rant otherwise.
