Another OLP CD before next summer?

Post by naseoj »

I was reading this interview with Raine and Steve here and this is what it says near the end:

What's next for Our Lady Peace?

Raine: Just touring for the next little while. Try and put out a record before next summer, I think. We have the stuff that didn't make this record you know...when you sit on shit too long you start getting tired of it, and then you change and your sound changes. And all the sudden, that stuff doesn't seem good to you when probably, if you were to work on it again tomorrow, it would still seem great. So just trying to capture that before we lose sight of it.

Wow...did anyone see this coming?

Well, they've already used 12 for HIPT, so rough estimate their should be 30 songs on the album coming up, give or take 20 :freak:

I hope they don't just use songs left over. I mean, if the 12 on HIPT are the best of the bunch, why the hell would you put out a lesser album of lesser songs?

I'm assuming they would take some of the songs that didn't make HIPT and continue re-working them until they were totally satisfied with them, which is what has been said in a few radio interviews.

Our Lady Peace is touring after the release of their seventh album, Health in Paranoid Times. While they were in town for their sold out show at the Royal Oak Music Theatre, OLP's lead singer Raine Maida and homeboy guitarist Steve Mazur took time out to talk with The Michigan Journal.

The Michigan Journal: What did you look for in your bandmates?

RM: We started in Toronto 11 years ago and, I don't know, just kind of find people that one-you agree with musically and, two-even more importantly to me these days, that you evolve and you agree with on like a life level.
I know it sounds really cliché but I'm going to travel on a bus and live with people....You want someone who kind of agrees with you. It sounds weird but even like politically and just the way you approach life morally and all that crazy shit...
I treat music very preciously now. You know it's the one commodity that's still pure in this form, before you make a video, before you get into the bullshit of the music business. But when we go play every night and making a record, that's still like one of the last pure things on earth, to me at least. Just try to surround yourself with people who feel the same way.

MJ: How do you compare this album to your previous albums?

SM: All the other records we had, like, moments that we really liked and on this record we sort of kept going until every song was one of those great moments. So past records we look at and feel like "OK, there's two or three great moments on there." And this record took a long time to make and that was one of the big reasons why is 'cause we wanted every song to be a great moment.
And it's also different, [in that] we approached the record in a really different way. We wrote and recorded in stages and took time off in between, which the band had never really done before. So the album was given perspective after taking those breaks...the method was definitely very different than in the past.

MJ: I was reading that you recorded 43 songs. How did you narrow those down for this album?

SM: Well basically, out of those 43 songs, a lot of those were experimental things, where we said "let's try to do this kind of thing; let's try to do this kind of thing." So a lot of those songs to us are crap and we hate them and we don't want any one else to hear them.
There are other ones that are fantastic and that we love but didn't necessarily fit the vibe of what we wanted to put together for this record. You know, it's like you can have an unbelievable song but if it doesn't sort of fit the pieces of the puzzle that is the record you're making, then it just doesn't make sense to jab in right in there....a record is like a novel or anything that needs work. So hopefully some of those songs will come up in the future.

MJ: Do you feel that your sound has evolved?

RM: I think it evolved a lot on this record. It sounds a little more mature to me and real. I might sound like an idiot but it sounds more timeless. On this record, we took care with that to make a record.
We've never been one of those bands that like fit into the right genre that was going on at the time, you know...The grunge, we weren't grunge enough to be grunge and we weren't poppy enough when the pop thing happened. We weren't emo...But I think making a bunch of records now, looking back, we're able to have the confidence to make a record that we love...if it doesn't fit into a genre that was a good thing.
I mean it's weird. It's just very much us and it took a long time and a lot of songs to kind of realize that and to become comfortable with that. But that's really, you know, that's what that whole 2 1/2 years recording all those songs really led us to, the fact that, you know, that this is the way we sound most honest and that's just the way it's got to be.

MJ: What are your musical influences?

SM: I love Neil Young, The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, David Bowie, Queen, the Stones, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pantera, Miles Davis, John Coltrain.

RM: I mean I love music but I think my surroundings in life really inspire more to write....[I] kind of go by the moment so if I feel inspired stuff just pours out of me... When things are great, I feel like something's being channeled through me rather than trying to sit there and write a song. That's a f$#ing drag. You know what I mean? It's like that's work. It should just pour out of you.

SM: For me it's that and it's also trying to keep the innocence and inspiration I felt when I first started. It's very easy I think, as an adult, no matter what you do, to get swept up by a lot of other unimportant things that life brings about.
And for me, sometimes, over the course of the last 20 years [or] whatever since I started, getting back to that place where you're just doing it with nothing to gain nothing to lose, just letting flow because you're having a great time. Sometimes I just have to make sure I maintain that.
MJ: How do you feel about the current phenomena of downloading music?

RM: It's tricky...especially with the rise of like independent labels these days. Hopefully, that'll make people more aware that it's like you got to pay for it. CDs shouldn't be $18; I completely agree with that. But you know, it's one thing to look at a major [artist], you know look at 50 Cent, take a record from him. Yeah he's not suffering. But you download a record from Arcade Fire, or any band that's...doing it on their own, and yeah, you're like taking money out of their pockets.
It sucks for the spirit of the music industry. You have all these people really trying to make this art and put it out there. It's like cutting off their arms.

SM: Yeah, 'cause if you love a band and you want to see more from them, you want to hear more from them and you're not paying for their music, if no one's paying for their music, they're not going to have money to tour. They're not going to have money to keep going.

RM: It's a tough enough business, you know. Even if you're on a major label, you know. It's a brutal business. So for these bands that are really doing it on their own, yeah you got to buy their shit...
There's so many great like independent bands in Canada that'll sell like 25,000 records on their own, which is huge feat. But you know, if 10,000 of those are stolen from downloading...you're talking about half of their money. And all the sudden the band breaks up because they can't afford get a van and tour and there you go. That's just a prime example of someone that, just because of how easy it is to download shit, it killed them.

MJ: What's in your CD player right now?

RM: I don't have a CD player; I have an iPod. And on there, I just bought the new Kanye West record. That guy's brilliant.

SM: Yep, I agree...I bought that one as well. For me, a lot of old David Bowie lately.

RM: Larry Cohen.

MJ: What's your favorite song to perform live?

RM: For me it's "Angels/Losing/Sleep" first song on our new record

S?: For me, it's "Picture" off our new record.

MJ: What's next for Our Lady Peace?

RM: Just touring for the next little while.

MJ: I really appreciate you taking the time to talk to us.

RM: You're welcome. Thank you.

SM: Definitely.

Just wait. On the next tour the band will break out into their cover of Jesus Walks. The backup choir will be covered by Duncan with his high-end backup vocals.
